Yorkshire and North East Film Archives
United Kingdom
Приєднався 12 тра 2010
Whether it’s our amazing landscapes, our rich industrial heritage, our cities, towns, villages, coast and country stretching from Sheffield to the Scottish borders, amateur and professional filmmakers alike have been capturing life in Yorkshire and the North East of England on film for over 130 years.
As a registered charity, our work is to collect, preserve, and make these extraordinary collections accessible for everyone. With over 70,000 items of original film, video tape, and born-digital material, the task of preserving, cataloguing, and digitising these collections is immense - but so are the rewards. People are fascinated to see their own communities, the lives of their grandparents and great-grandparents, the fashions, transport, the momentous events of the decades, through to the fascinating insight into the everyday lives of people throughout the past century.
Our website features over 2,300 films, all free to view: www.yfanefa.com

Bingley Five Rise Locks
March 2024 marks the 250th anniversary of Bingley Five Rise Locks, classed by the Canal and River Trust as one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the Waterways’. These staircase locks, on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, are the steepest in the UK and still in frequent use by boaters today.
The locks were captured on film in 1959 by Jack Eley, a keen amateur filmmaker from Leeds, as part of his travelogue ‘Yorkshire Curiosities’.

Air pollution is one of the biggest problems with burning fossil fuels for energy, both for the planet and for the health of local residents who live near the power stations. The Clean Air Act of 1956 was introduced as a response to London’s Great Smog of 1952, in the hopes of making the quality of the air much better, whilst reducing the risks. Take a look at this public information film which...

Never forget what they took from you.
Roughly 1850 to early 1900s bradford was actually the wealthiest city outside london due to its 200 or so textile mills, hard to imagine when you look at the state of it now!
Walking through Leeds now is like Walking through ancient Rome and knowing that you are standing where once a great city was and now all you see is ghosts
Both brilliant and heart-rending.
Loved in hull 80 years😅😅
That's my Father on the left at 1:02.
This is Bradford l remember🎉
And now thanks for the do gooders how didn't listen to Mr Powell is a shithole
Bradford is certainly an interesting place these days ! A bit of tact and diplomacy there and a bit of mild sarcasms and dry humour thrown in for good measure !
And Bradford today?
So much has changed in 2 years.
Im not from Hull but ive been a few times, I like it over there, no idea why.
I’d point out what’s changed but we’re not allowed to mention it for fear of thought crime.
It’s Much Better Now Actually SEEING A ASIAN WEDDING ON GREAT HORTON ROAD WITH A BUGATI AT THE FRONT Followed by 20 Supercars Behind Or,Going To Leeds Road And Smelling All The Different Foods From Across The World Or,Going To Cannon Mills And See Real Grafters People Making A Living Through Rains And Snows BRADFORD IS ON THE MAP !
you're welcome
Thanks for posting this clip. It's surprisingly quiet both around the locks and on the canal bank at the bottom of the locks (from 0:45 onwards), despite the lovely warm sunny weather. I think that bigger crowds would visit nowadays (and not just in this celebration year), even without such nice weather.
There have been a lot of improvements in Leeds since these clips were filmed, but the sad part is the deterioration of Leeds Market. When the shots of Leeds Market were filmed it was a thriving food supplier to possibly half of the people of Leeds. The food stalls were simply fantastic, especially "Butchers Row", a whole corridor of butchers shops, all trying to give the shoppers a good deal. I was actually in Leeds Market two days ago, and it is hard to believe that now there in only ONE butchers shop in the main market. It is so sad. 75% of what is shown on this clip is no longer there. I am SO lucky to have seen our Market when it was possibly the best Market in Yorkshire.
Yes, they have spoiled the market, I loved going shopping at Butchers Row at of the day they would do meat wrap-ups but can't remember how much they were I was only 8 yrs old. Fantastic times in the market indoors and outdoors.
i prefer the old bradford to bradistan.
That time predates me and I'm nearly 60. You must be REALLY old.
Well the glorious and happy memories of Leeds! And now look at it!😢
An excellent watch. Really highlights the inequality and injustice at the heart of the climate and nature crisis. Lots of food for thought on a green and just transition.
I Love this country, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else, ( I've never been to Bradford though, by the way, but it looks nice ), x
It looked nice I think is what your looking for🎉
@@NJ87-90 ok, yes, I get your point 😉
I was incredibly impressed with the hiking - then I saw the rock climbing and it was astonishing. What achievements! Is this guy still alive? Also, this video would be enhanced by the inclusion of information about the various locations visited (especially the rock climbing section).
Many thanks for your comments. John died in 2020, leaving a great legacy behind. If you visit the links below the video, the locations are included, along with more information about John and his life. You can also watch his three films in full on our website: yfanefa.link/johnh Hope you enjoy them!
As a Glaswegian who lived in Leeds for three years I have to say that Leeds and the people of Leeds have so much in common with Glasgow and the people of Glasgow, very fond memories.
Same here my friend I live near leeds and have visited and worked in Glasgow many times and I've always felt welcome, love the place
oh my gosh. It looks so different now.
Great video, there is still a worry- how alienated young people are from nature and are now into digital devices.
Best city in the North lovely peaple 🧡🤍❤️💚 love from Devon
So great to play a part in this! 🐛🪴🌻🐬🦐
Very powerful film. Thank you
Makes me cry every time I watch it! 💚
Great video!
Thought this was turd
You spotted them then, Sam ... ?
Probably my favourite film that you have ever produced and that's saying something. Excellent it was. Well done to all involved 👏
Thought provoking and impactful. Great work!
I'm a little biased but I'm so proud of this film, congratulations to everyone involved in the production.
Lovely video
Lovely, I've been waiting for this so I can share it. Thank you.
Thank YOU, John!
Thanks to all involved 🙌
11th May 1985. 56 never forgotten.
Citizens of Bradford I am afraid you were let down by successive Governments. I really do not know what the comments would be if Sir Titus Salt was taken on a tour of the city. But, you are not alone in this situation, it is almost nationwide.
@heartofoak45 your so right hit the nail on the head Bradford didn't die it was murdered
Beeston represent
This video proves there was more culture in Bradford pre diversity
It started to turn to shit about 1:55 and gone down hill since
great film
In my opinion leeds city centre is far better now esp with the massive construction boom currently in the city, its always been ahead of its competition when it comes to development in the cc, currently we have at least 20 cranes in the cc with huge skyscraper buildings going up, the city also has a good balance of new and old better than most other cities. In the next 10 years the city centre should pretty much double in size. Sadly though most other towns and cities in yorkshire and many other parts of england are just becoming immigration shitholes with increases in crime, grooming gangs, murder which inturn decreases house prices and makes quality of life poor, governments were warned!
I do not wish to take away your views on the current state of Leeds, but there will never be another shopping area like the Leeds Market was in the 1940s/50s. Todays "supermarkets" cannot begin to compare with the old Kirkgate Market.
Look how busy Leeds market was. It's shit now. No atmosphere.
Hi..
Utter dump nowadays
Very nice 🎉
Very different place now...
Poignant and heartbreaking, beautifully made.
