First guy that makes sense on semiconductor in India
Rohan has done a fantastic job , to bring out the nuances in this Industry .
The essence to carry for any individual or country is that the world is so intensely interdependent.

Bhakts trying to fit in their words wherever possible. 😂😂 Does your Vasudeva Kutumbakam says the chip industry's supply chain should be limited within a handful of countries? Because that is how chip industry functions today and is gonna be for a long time in the future. And these countries are not fools to share their part in this supply chain to others. Holland, Germany, USA, UK, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China are the only countries that have participation in the chip supply chain. 90 percent of the countries in the world have no participation at all in this.
May be you're right if the general awareness is zero. But anyone from the field would feel the discussion is rudimentary

For that (desire to "actively play a role in it"), the basic infrastructure & ambience needs to be there in a country - that doesn't come by looking at those who accomplish great things (Japan, Taiwan for example). In 1970s-'80s we missed that bus & that was capitalised by East Asian countries with alacrity. We couldn't reach the first rung of that development, being by-standers. We can't even claim anything. Now the same (as we desire) becomes an uphill task for us. We neither possess expertise, experience nor knowledge as to how to go about that task (believe me). However we made a decision & we'll go. On the way we'll learn how hard the task is.
Once ushered in and with a billion ICs freely available in the market, our younger lot (irrespective of qualifications) tinker with the devices producing millions of day-to-day useful gadgets (a la Shenzhen in PRC). It would provide (self-) employment to tens of millions (& governments needn't intervene). Quality of life will get a step-up. That will be the culmination of this effort.
India is THE global market for everything because of the sheer volume of demand, If India can meet its own demand it is already a big deal! Thanks for the discussion.

TSMC is like a dental technician which makes the zircon teeth, or the dentures, but I as dentist I make the plan and decision with the patient how things will run and how the patient will be treated.
TSMC only is producing chips, the algorithm and the design of the chips is from those who make the orders to TSMC.
By the way I can choose the technician, and many times I have changed them if I am not satisfied with their work of making dentures of zirkon teeth.

If the money needed to become a leader in chip manufacturing is invested in improving the education standards of our university, it will have a greater impact on the country than chip manufacturing.

to get a wafer fab in india , we should follow the chip act and israeli type subsidy plus state govts should welcome them with free land or highly subsidised land and power and in the area where the talent is available and not ask for backward area development .you cannot build chips in a desert area .Intel , micron , qualcom , Nvidia and AMD are all watching and have explored it many many times and given up .we have more negative news being highlighted and for an industry as sophisticated as chip making and wafer fab , we are not ready .
What stupid questions is Rohan asking. These questions are atleast 5 years dated. If this is top platforms to discuss AI and chip designs in India then it really shows how nascent Indian thought process is in AI and chip making.

Exactly. General public is unaware of their own ignorance (some worse specimens among them would become "decision-makers", in due course, as has happened in 1970s-80s).
It is very entertaining. The reality is this world does not need many Semiconductor Industry areas, even Germany does not have one.
What is Miller smoking? India needs to install working plumbing, dismantle the caste system, get a stable functional government and a work ethic before it makes any progress in semiconductor design and fabrication. There are plenty of good Indians working in the industry outside of India, I doubt any of them want to move home & try to duplicate an industry that does not need it. Seriously, India has zero chance here.

If it is Chip design, that is another topic. Without much of an investment, you can create many jobs. But even for that, you need a well educated work force. With idiots thinking Ram mandir is enough, it is not possible.

I am constrained to agree, because every word of what you say is right. Yet, a nation has to make efforts & strive. Hopefully in that process, a part of the population will achieve something. India is a country of extreme contrasts. Yet, your sermon has the power of reminding us, Indians - of what is basically needed to be done.

🔹Indian billionaires should invest in Semiconductor chip manufacturing in India instead on talking their Indian profits ₹₹ to foreign countries ( Narayana Murthy , TATA, Adani, Mahindra and Ambani etc).
🔹May be they all should form a joint venture to do it. Make Japan a partner .
🔹Indian govt is loosing best talent( brain drain) due to reservations . They should invite Indian chip experts back with incentives.
I think India and Mexico are going to be big in next few years, the fact that India may not move as fast is because of their ultra extreme religion where women are treated badly, if they could change their laws and have women enter the work sector and get protected by their laws India is going very far
It is not possible for Chips to be manufactured in India for the next 30 years or so. Even if Indian govt does everything to build an ecosystem for chip manufacturing, the participant countries in the chip desigining are very few, and they are not ready to give up their position in the supply chain even partially, to any other countries in the world.
And most importantly, all these countries that are invloved in chip manufacturing process are all hardcore allies of US, or it can be said that they are just some overseas territories of the US. This will become another problem to India, as India will be forced to give up its neutral stance on the world stage in return for a supply chain participation, and maybe even completely side with the US on everything like UK, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
And by the time India gives up its neutral stance to join with US for the sake of chip production, China might be closer to achieving Chip independency or at least a lot closer than it is today, to the cutting edge chips made by TSMC. Huawei now has its own chip architecture called LingXi that is independent of x86 and ARM. SMIC and Huawei must have already made some modifications to their DUV litho machine, which is why they were able to manufacture 7nm chip as seen on Huawei mate 60 pro. And their own home produced 5nm chip is also on the way.
I have read his book 'Chip War'. Just a few pages into the book, and it starts spewing Anti Communist, Anti Soviet and Anti Chinese psychotic rant, like during the heights of cold war propaganda. If Indian commerce minister Ashwini Vishnaw gets eventually enticed by the chip manufcturing to push changes in the foreign policies of India to become pro US, it will only bring more serious trouble to India like never seen before.
Whatever India does, it should be within the bounds of not making any changes to the foreign policy in favor of any one of the two dominating blocks of the world.
But ofcourse, Bill Gates Junior here would want all Indians to believe that he is unbiased and not a product of the century old Anti Communist propaganda.
Not everything needs 5nm and 7 nm cutting edge chips, even 32 nm and above chips work in most of cars and appliances. point is being independent.
@@BasEkKafir Exactly. But the problem is that, India doesn't manufacture even the 32nm chips. Chips are not jus chips but politics as well. Chips have been on the forefront of global politics for almost 70 years. What the US is doing to China is nothing new, if one reads the history of semiconductor battle between US and USSR. USSR was just 2 or 3 years behind the US in cutting edge Chips, but on performance level, the difference was way too much. Today, China is facing the similar blockade that was once put around USSR. Thing is, It is not just the US, but the network of all the developed countries that made it impossible for USSR to get to the same level of US. Same case with China. China has to do everything by itself like competing with US on software and hardware for litho machine, on specialized gases with Japan, on chip architecture with UK and finally on Chip production with Taiwan, Japan and Korea. USSR didn't have any other developed countries as an ally at that time to form an alternate network. China has allies but they are all under the impression of US. Where could you possibly imagine the role of India in all of this? Honestly, nowhere. Not just India, 90 percent of the world is outside of this cutting edge supply chain. Even Russia has only recently realized that it has long become a joke after the fall of USSR, and they have started investing in Chips. Only time will tell if China is capable of gaining Chip independency or not.
India must start building a monopoly that is funded and controlled by govt to start making the SOCs first. But only by making some protectionist policies, would India be able to utilise those SOCs, failing to do that would result in a big loss, as foreign brands will capture the market by slashing the price, and push Indian brand into bankruptcy. It is one hell of a task, which India cannot do right now.
The most pragmatic way for India would be to trade it's Non alignment policy for a position in the supply chain participation, to the US.

@@mayurkanth6987 Back then, China was necessary for US than vice versa. Without China, US would have lost the cold war with USSR. But Indian and Western media would never tell you this story. India could be do the same, but India is not in the Chinese block, rather India is in a middle ground, which doesn't value much. But still, Indian govt can get out of its relationship with BRICS and SCO to completely align with the US, and see how it works out in the long run.

Instead of spending 1 trillion dollars on Bullet train from Ahmedabad to Mumbai, India should have committed that money on Semiconductors.
Bullet train project cost is only 1500 crore not 1 trillion dollar.
Also, it is being funded at very low interest rate loans from Japan.
And a large country like India needs to move forward in all areas. be it bullet train, to semiconductors, to AI, quantum computers, space sector.
1 billion dollars for the bullet train you fool. And for semiconductors India is already spending 15 billion dollars now, read the news. Read nothing, but have to give gyaan.

Regarding the chips that you can buy for 10 dollars, saying they are cheap, but if you buy a mobile phone you pay thousand of dollars, let alone for cars 70 thousand. The other issue mentioning companies like they do the production and distribution, and scientist who make the product through thinking and creativity, without scientist companies are not able to produce nothing let alone to sell something, I have contrary view with what you said here.
In corona time I was ashamed to call myself a doctor, but now I am ashamed to be called a Professor - a title like this should not think like this, merchant can never be in the level of intellectual let alone the talent or genius.
