I'm 62, read thousands of books, lived on several continents, watched God knows how many documentaries, but I'd never heard of thunder eggs. Goes to show you - there is always something fantastic to discover.
Thank you for teaching me about thunder eggs, I had never heard of them before & I'm 69 years old I know quite a bit about gems &stones like Moss agate Jasper onyx and so on but thundereggs totally stumped me. I love you learn about Nature's beauties so once again thank you very much for teaching an old woman new tricks lol, have a great life and keep teaching 👍🤗
I have died and gone to heaven! I would GIVE anything to be right there with you. My house is a cave, filled w/ quartz, Amethyst, coral, agate, shells. My heart is soaring just watching, the total aaahhh of pulling MOTHER 🌎 treasures out. WISH I were there!!!
I love thunder eggs and all minerals. I used to pan gold in Idaho wilderness. Unfortunately I only got tiny flakes not nuggets, lol. There is an opal mine in nothern Idaho and my friend brought me a rock contained opal a long ago. I also love Agate with scenery.
I was fortunate to have found 3 Thunder Eggs this season agate hunting up in the UP of MI by Superior out of a quarry. That specific area has thunder eggs, but it is much more well known for the beautiful Lake Superior agates we find there. A sliced Thunder Egg reminds me, in some ways, of some sliced moss agates. In fact, the first Thunder Egg I found in that area was about the size of a baseball and at first, I thought it was a moss agate. I have one Egg from OR that was given to me by my son in law, who lives out there, and the OR Thunder Eggs seem to have a wider variety of colors than the ones we find in that area of the UP of MI.
One of my geodes has gotten broken open more. You know I like it even more now. Now there are two where there was one. The more I learn about these rocks. The more I want to go hunting them.
Im not sure why everyone is saying we don't know how these are formed, we learned about this in seventh grade earth science. Thunder eggs are almost like geodes they form the same way as gold and quartz super heat and under super amounts of pressure turns it all into a slurry of gases that come up from way down and as soon as it finds space it begins to cool and pressure lowers the gases cool condensing and depositing what it carries on to the surrounded rock. Slowly over centuries the void is filled completely making a thunder egg, when the void is not completely filled it's called a geode. Oh you can have both a geode within a thunder egg those are super amazing, but you can't have a thunder egg inside a geode
Kurt Fox listen fuck nuts at 3:25 or so the "expert" says that they dont know how they are formed. And that's bulshit because we do know how they are formed I try and only comment on video topic and or subject, but when you comment on my comment and haven't even watched the video we're talking about, that kinda makes you the loser. Have a nice day
IMO robert wasnt being rude, just making an assumption and the kurt came in calling ppl a loser sooooo... yeah. I guess not everyone can be kind lol. Thanks for the extra explanation. Good comment.
I just found my very first thunder egg. In a dirt lot in my town, just a couple blocks away, *somewhere* in the Mojave desert. Alas, I don't have a big enough blade for it, it's a bit bigger than a softball. God I love rockhounding! I also love how lucky I've been hunting IN TOWN. Methinks nobody but me knows about these places, but since it's not isolated I wonder if people know what I'm doing and move in on my secret locations...
My theory about how geodes are created is that when during an eruption there are globules of lava tossed into the atmosphere that cool enough before landing to form a shell. Then as they become part of the pyroclastic flow steam is injected into them furthering the cooling causing them to seal further and from the partial evaporation of the liquid inside, crystals are formed making the beauty within. Just a thought.
Cameron Driscoll a geode is a non specific term used for any hollow rock with crystaline formations inside, does not mean a thunder eggs isn't a type of geode but it's usually not hollow
Thunder eggs are rhyolite shells with solid jasper agate or crystals, while geodes are hollow with crystal formations. Not synonymous with eachother to answer your question.
Geodes are not always hollow, if given enough time and exposure to dissolved minerals they become solid, the formations in the rocks in the video seem to form exactly the same way, but the rocks the minerals seeped in may have formed slightly different
Urghh....this reminds me of my time doing teaching assistantship. I has to polish sections of thunder eggs by hand with just different sized abrasive mess...no tools at all....and this thing is hella hard.....my nemesis
Make jewelry I'd love it..I dug for crystals..in South Carolina..one year..still have em..brought em home.. beautiful..n fun to dig for .I'm addicted Now I need to get a Tumblr
I love watching passionate people explain their passion

That dad and his little girl are making some amazing memories.
remember that time we spent the day picking rocks?
I think the Mother is there too hahaha poor Mom
As opposed to "Do you remember the day you spent watching youtube videos on your iPad?"
Their answer: "Which day, they all blend in"! Lol.
By using her to make him money and do his labor? If you say so
Those are nice, looking inside of them really pretty.
Magnificent treasures. They are wonderful.👍🤩🌏👏👏❤️
Amazing and mind blowing video what our mother nature has to offer.
I have learned a little about rock hunting but I have never been out on a hunt. It looks really fun. I do have rocks and geodes and love them all.
I was having a tree stone, a thunder egg too with spiney cristial inside and a huge fossile stone in my grandparent home. And i love to see them.
These are so beautiful!
This is amazing, the looks of theses eggs are absolutely stunning

ROBIN HESS OMG I would love to live in a cave, you are so lucky, that is my dream!
How high are you?
Are you a hobbit?

Rock hounding is very addictive. I started 6 months ago, haven't found anything special but I love the hunt
That Is Truly Beautiful
Just imagine the gazillions of possible different designs that can be found inside those rocks.

love this! what a great hobby! 😊🤩
Thank you rocks, very cool.

Tried this in the height of summer in Australia. Was sweating buckets at the end. Maybe a winter pursuit for us Aussies
This was a great video and I super appreciate it!
I was watching a standup comedian, but I feel like a video titled, “thunder eggs,” is much more appropriate while on the toilet.
Cool !!! Ummmm rocks
Gorgeous. How does these and geodes get made.

i been picking rocks of all kinds for yrs and just learned about thunder eggs right this second smh cool lol
Interesting !
this is very many in my village .
you can having in the long river...
Doesn't take millions of years for water to fill in the center with minerals. What is the shortest amount of time for these things to take place?
My theory about how geodes are created is that when during an eruption there are globules of lava tossed into the atmosphere that cool enough before landing to form a shell. Then as they become part of the pyroclastic flow steam is injected into them furthering the cooling causing them to seal further and from the partial evaporation of the liquid inside, crystals are formed making the beauty within. Was the mudfossil so big that he thundered,? is that why they are called thunder eggs?.
When you find any sort of crystal on a rock it feels like a jackpot
so these are geodes right? Why do they keep calling them thunder eggs?
geodes are usually hollow
chuckcrunch1 ah. Thanks.
Cameron Driscoll a geode is a non specific term used for any hollow rock with crystaline formations inside, does not mean a thunder eggs isn't a type of geode but it's usually not hollow

What is the diffrence between a geodode and a thunder egg?
