    True Story: My farm ground was next door to Russ Dunham. Medal of Honor, DSC, 3 Silver Stars and the Big Croix de Guerre. He saved a private at Anzio who went on to be Marshall Matt Dillon of Gunsmoke. Early 60s and James Arness tells the producer of Combat, "you need this guy, he was THE combat infantry Sergeant over there; a real hero the men wanted to follow." Russ is hired to work with Vic Morrow as to how an infantry sergeant acts and handles himself. Mrs Dunham said "Brad I popped popcorn and made cokes to watch the 1st episode and during the show our little girl said daddy he walks just like you and sounds like you too." Vic Morrow copied Russ to a Tee.

    Still one of my favorites. With 11 family members that served in WWII and all returned, it ignited a deep curiosity in WWII.
    This was further fuel by meeting and visiting with a number of individuals that survived German concentration camps!
    The last one was Elizabeth Hozak. She is the only member of her family to survive the CONCENTRATION camps.
    I ask her to talk with my son about her experiences which included her showing him her CONCENTRATION camp prisoner tattoo number.
    She was 15 when taken prisoner. Sent to Dr Joseph mengele's camp where she was subjected to his heinous experiments. Legs broken same location to see how it heals. Raped 16 times. Last time she killed her attacker.
    As she was trying to escape she ran into Allied tropps liberating the camp. Which lead to her living here!

    In a number of Combat episodes, a new guy amazes the squad with his courage and "one-man-army" abilities. Funny that Saunders asked Cross if he was with the 423rd.
    The real 423rd Infantry was part of the very green 106th ID in Middleton's VIII Corps in front of St. Vith in Belgium when the Germans went on the offensive on December 16th, 1944. They had been in the line only 4 days. Sadly, they were cut off and surrounded by nightfall on the 17th. They tried to breakout westwards towards St. Vith, but were cut to pieces and forced to surrender along with the 422nd Infantry about 4pm on the 19th. About 7500 GIs were bagged.

    • @brucealvarez9263
      @brucealvarez9263 6 років тому +2

      That wasn't a BAR (ie Browning Automatic Rifle M1918A2, 20 round box magazine in 1944, 16 pounds), it was a Browning M1919 air cooled machine gun, 250 round feed belt, 31 pounds. Interestingly, effective range and the rate of fire of the two are fairly similar. However the M1918A2's 300-650 rounds per minute doesn't mean much when the magazine holds only 20 cartridges. 5 to 10.8 rounds per second, empty in 4 seconds max at 300 RPM and under 2 seconds max at 650 RPM. I have to believe it was impossible to keep the gun on a target at those rates of fire. I suspect they were fired in short bursts of 2 or 3 rounds.

    So I didn't catch it there at the end: Did they get pushed off the hill by the Germans?? I thought they got all the mortar guys and had those few remaining ones at the top taken care of with the BAR. If there were more Germans who pressed them off the hill, they certainly seemed to be rather casual in just standing at the bottom of an enemy-occupied hill... Pretty funny, though, that Little John would've grabbed that damn bicycle tire out of the rubble, bent in half, in the midst of a hasty retreat.

    I've always loved the Combat series, but they sometimes show the Germans as being stupid.....and they were far from that. Like when the pair of Germans approach the farmhouse with supplies talking away, seemingly without a thought of checking out the premises first before unloading supplies, while being observed by the Americans.....Not. Still a fantastic series and have been watching it since it first came on TV in '63. They usually have great stories with some kind of life lesson involved. Thanks GR!!!
