Fun fact: Michael had no idea what the superbowl even was. They had asked him to do it because at the time, halftime shows were dated and nothing like they are today, and they needed a fresh, well-loved artist with a relatable sound to get views up. Michael was obviously best pick. He initially requested payment which was unprecedented, but then they negotiated him doing it in exchange for a sizable donation to his charity. Like so many other things, Michael actually pioneered the superbowl halftime performances as we know them today. Outside of being a larger than life performer, people forget Michael Jackson was a HUGE philanthropist and one of his biggest goals was to give back and help people, hence why he ended the performance with those songs and visuals. It’s also forgotten he was a black man, and this performance comes after the tumultuous times of the LA Riots and the beating of Rodney king, where racial tensions were at a high. I agree, he could have chosen his other hits, but context is also key. He knew he would have millions of eyes and TV sets’ on him in that moment, so he took advantage of that to spread a message of love and unity which I think is pretty noble.
I'm going to say it: that was my absolute favorite part of that day. One of these days I may change my profile pic and it won't be obvious why... (God, I wanted Bills-Cowboys 3 this year. Maybe next year though.)

I'll never forget the feeling of watching Prince play "Purple Rain". The suspense of waiting for that first chord of the song to hit, his silhouette during the guitar solo, the crowd singing the end of the song with him....all while it was actually raining. It was too good to be true. That type of magic is never gonna be topped.
It literally will never be topped. It's the lasting image of Prince in my head. Purple Rain playing, guitar strumming, high heel wearing, rain falling perfectly, unbothered and with the crowd at full throat.
Not to mention They were using 5 electric bass guitars on set. They could have been electrocuted on stage with it raining like that He literally was risking his life. He didn't pause or complain. Just played the shit out of it. Whenever they talk superbowl, this immediately comes to mind.
Fun fact: Michael Jackson's superbowl halftime in 1993 broke record for being the only halftime show to have more live audience viewers than the superbowl itself. He was the only act on stage. He was the only act in history where NFL offered to pay the artist, but it went to his charity at the time 'Heal LA' which helped struggling youth in Los Angeles. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

Due to the OG creators seeing the whole debacle over this clip and coming up with the idea for creating a better video sharing platform for viral videos and that site ended up being UA-cam... The 2004 tsunami footage also played a part in motivation later but this was still the original light bulb moment before that. So this clip is arguably kind of an important piece of Internet History. Edit: It’s kind of funny cause in todays much stricter UA-cam that clip uncensored I imagine would probably get your channel stricken or demonetized.
The weeknd's performance was in the pandemic. Every performer had to tested always and some got positive once a while. It took a lot of effort and expense for it to be atleast that good. And since its mostly for the online audience due to the pandemic, it looks more like an online concert.
Daft Punk's Grammy performance of Get Lucky is probably my favorite live performance of all time. So many musical legends on stage, having Stevie Wonder join Pharrell and Nile Rodgers, all clearly having such a good time performing, with daft punk incorporating snippets of their other classics like Around The World and Harder Better Faster Stronger. It just feels like such a celebration of music as a whole
I am gonna disagree with Bruno Mars place, he was one of the youngest to perform but he still gave one of the best performance. His dance, voice and band was everything on point
Prince’s performance just felt like a perfect moment in time. The doves, the guitar, the vocals, the purple rain, just ugh. I miss him so much. Beyoncé and Lady Gaga’s are the ones I rewatch the most though. They are easily the two of the best performers of the past 22 years.
Prince's Halftime Show was amazing, out of this world. Everything was so right and together so nicely. Every element of that performance was magic. He is so missed and I can't believe it's almost 6 years since he was taken away from us. It still feels like yesterday. I also agree with your 2nd statement, them 2 I rewatch many times. I would also include Bruno's in there. Them 3 are just amazing on that stage. Their performance alone together was amazing, wonderful performers. I wish Bruno's was higher ranked in the list, he did amazing in 2014 and 2016 (w/ Beyoncé and Coldplay). And Michael's in 1993 was great but I do agree with the ranking for him at #6 respectfully. He did start this trend of high-profile artists going to the Super Bowl. His energy was amazing but he definitely had his flaws in his performance. It wasn't live vocals except for some vocals on Heal The World. His band was just miming, as well he was just miming the words. He could've fitted a couple of more of his hits and songs in his medley. It was really short and Heal The World took most of the runtime for the Halftime show, it's a great song though, great rhythm but I wish more songs could've taken up that time, but anyways, his performance was great, he's one of the most Greatest Entertainers of All Time but his Super Bowl in particular wasn't all that. But it was good. I understand that ranking completely, I hope people understand where I'm coming from.
I watched the Prince set live w my Mom. We were both big fans and would argue who was the bigger fan. I remember us watching the game, snacking and having some wine waiting for Prince amd just jamming out to the whole set. Def my fav performance and full of memories for me

My dream halftime show would have be a Jay-Z and Kanye watch the throne reunion. And when Kanye inventively does stronger, Daft Punk makes a guest appearance and steals the show. (Oh man, this did not age well)
Beyoncé is the whole package. She gave us all at the same time : Worldwide Bops, Live Vocals, Stage Presence, Hard Choreography, Costume Change, Visuals, Production, Drama and the Energy !! Wow
I could be wrong about this but I’m pretty sure U2 was the only major band that was out doing shows after 9/11 because a lot of performers were afraid to go onstage at that point. That’s probably why they didn’t have Americans do the show
It's because they were already booked for the Superbowl show well before 9/11. They book the performers a good year in advance. The SB was held only 5 months after 9/11.
@@mooviedude141 that’s complete incorrect. They booked U2 in October 2001 after an NFL executive saw their show at Madison Square Garden where they put up all the names of the victims

You didn’t like Grambling State Marching Band? Super Bowl I was in 1967 & the first 20 years of Super Bowl half time were nothing to talk about. It wasn’t until 1993 when MJ performed did we get big acts. That leaves just 30 shows done by big acts. You nailed it on Prince as #1
Michael Jackson was in talks to perform the Super Bowl again in 2010 and it no doubt would have been more epic than his 1993 performance, even despite his age of 51. In 1993, there weren’t that many theatrics (not that he needed it), but in 2010 it would have that modern “Super Bowl Halftime Show” feel. I wish we got to see it!
I'm gonna declare that Katy Perry's half time show was THE BEST thing she's ever done and my personal favorite Halftime show. It reminded me how fun and exciting she way when she first came up, was an absolute party, gave us endless memes, and came at a time when the idea of "shared American cultural experience," wasn't this crazy idea that most of us wish we made more of.
MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE OF THE SHOW I WENT TO SEE HIM(M.J.), I HAVE NOT THAT MUCH RESPECT FOR THAT PERSON(who he was) . . HE HAD US WAITING FOR HIM TO START HIS SHOW(1988) FOR 40 MINS. THE PRO THAT #TheLateGreatPRINCERogersNelson WAS . . THAT SAME YEAR, WAS ON TIME WITH HIS SHOW.
I adored Prince's performance - he makes the hairs stand up on my neck. Agree about MJ. He was the pioneer and the reason acts like Gaga, Prince and Beyonce made it to that stage.
I thought The Weeknds placement could've been a little higher, after all the deep cuts he performed weren't that deep tbh, Save Your Tears went #1, Call Out My Name was a great opener and although not the wider audience knows House of Balloons it's his best song imo.
Yeah but saying that would mean that some of the placements above him should be lower which I disagree with. Can't place it much higher when the others are just better
It was raining the day of Prince’s super bowl. The manager of the event called Prince and asked “it’s raining will you be able to work around this and still do the show” and Prince responded “can you make it rain harder?”

She opened the doors for female artist to perform at the superbowl. She set the trend of having a good production and visuals of the stage. Katy perry superbowl was inspired also from Madonna.
In defence of the Weeknd if was still the late Pandemic days so it was projected not just as a live concert but as well as an online one. But I did enjoy it and it was for sure the better ones we had for the past 5 Years or so.

Shocked & Appalled Michael Jackson’s performance ranked lower than Madonna’s. Even with the song choices. He stood still for almost 2minutes & the world lost its mind 😭
Eh, I agree. I wasn't blown away by his performance (especially since I'm not a fan of "We Are the World"), but he def deserves at least one of the top spots for setting the standard. However, Madonna put on a perfectly indulgent performance
I live in Ireland and I've never had any desire to watch the superbowl. I've heard loads about the halftime shows, but this is the most I've actually seen of any of them. I didn't even know there were other people playing at the infamous 2004 show. I'll be binging those videos for the rest of the night. Great video, thank you.
Imagine if Freddie was still around and Queen did it. They would blow everyone away like they did at Live Aid in 1985. Let's be real, no one has the stadium hymns like Queen!
I’m a mj diehard fan and his performance was just out of this world but prince …man that was just something that my mind couldn’t take tbh just singing purple rain in the rain was just ong no words just wow
I can't believe how underrated Bruno Mars is. Man, he did everything like from playing drums and guitars to dancing. I still remembermy whole class became his fan overnight, my whole school was talking about his stage presence and charisma. I enjoyed his halftime show a lot; for me, it is one of the best halftime show ever. Also, in Coldplay's halftime show other than Beyoncé, Bruno and mark ronson's uptown funk was the best song of that year so obviously they were also the highlight of the show but you didn't bothered to mention about them.
Honestly you got most of them right, but I believed Coldplay was able to stand on there own, and the rap battle between Beyoncé and Bruno clashed with the overall theme of the show. Bruno’s performance was god tier.
I think Micheal Jackson could have been number 1 just because of the simplicity of it, getting the audience involved. He could have stood they're for 2 mins, the crowd goes wild and then left and I'd still be top 5 halftimes
In my opinion MJ's will always be the best. he CREATED the modern halftime shows we know today. He didn't need theatrics, he didn't need hit singles or crazy effects, all he needed was himself and people went crazy for it! To me, I think that is a true sign of an outstanding performer
Definitely Madonna, the impact of her performance was phenomenal, not only in the USA but also abroad. And don't forget the middle finger of Mia. Also was Madonna the only artist who had a top 10 number 'give me all your lovin', first performed at the Halftime Show.
Who gives af about charts. Talent and performance should matter and Katy lacks in both. She used a bunch of over the top production to distract you from her usual mediocrity
Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation performance was everything people talk about the aftermath instead talking about her performance and I love how she strutted down those stairs 🙌
For me the Michael Jackson show was easily the best and one of the most insanely awesome shows I've ever seen. I still remember everyone going completely nuts during that show and thinking how creative it was. It def wasn't the most modern w all the crazy stuff they do these days and high tech stuff they just didn't have back then but it was so perfectly done still

I thought the Weeknd last year was damn near perfect but I think if Kanye went on it would be the best ever, also, this year is guaranteed to be a shitshow, and if Kendrick only gets one song it could be the worst ever imo
The production and quality on Madonnas halftime show was on another level. Everything is top notch and makes other super bowl halftime shows look of less quality lol.
Very few people seem to realize that her entrance was an homage to Cleopatra's triumphant entrance in Rome in Liz Taylor's classic movie. I have rarely seen people point that out. My jaw dropped when I realized what Madonna was doing. She also performed a new song specifically written for the show, something no one else has done this century.
I would debate Bruno needs to be higher. His dancing was great, him on the drums as he approached the stage, and the transition into Red Hot Chili Peppers was real smooth. I’d say it was greater than where it was placed
I see people are talking about Michael Jackson’s “Lack Of Singing” let’s not forget that Jam & Billie Jean & Black Or White has lots and lots of dancing/choreography, and it’s very difficult to sing and dance at such a high level especially a grown man in his 30’s, he did the people a favor so his show can be perfect and y’all know that man was a perfectionist. So my question is would you rather have him singing “out-of-breath” and tired due to trying to manage both tasks or him Giving his all to perform with his playback. Just something I thought I should express, Ik people have their preference on whether artist sing live or not but some things we must take into consideration. Respectfully
I 100% agree with you. Being an Black-American, it wasn't definitely easy to be the 'king of pop'. He already proved how he's best from his childhood. Although people tries to look down on him, the artists here themselves always idolized MJ and don't feel ashamed to admit that most of them were inspired by MJ as well.
For the weekend house of balloons and call out my name weren't really played. Call out my name was just the intro before the show really started, and house of balloons was just some sound to play before blinding lights. I think save your tears is definitely a universal enough song to be played.

@@VinVonVoom it was like that because of the racial tensions that was happening at the time, so those songs were deliberate to at least bring unity and love
Beyoncé's Superbowl performance is way better and she's the better singer and dancer. MJ would never reach Beyoncé status when it comes to performing ... He literally lip syncs and kept collapsing on stage when he was in his 30s while Beyoncé still was giving us iconic moments in her 30s!!! Mj doesn't have a coachella homecoming performance that can top Beyonce’s
@@ushercraveWhen was he collapsing in his 30's? I've only ever found one instance of him collapsing on stage, and it was during a performance where he was 43 there, not 30. Beyonce fell on stage during the Superbowl with Bruno when she was 33 by comparison (understandable given her how heavy-set she is but still), whereas Mike's incident was when he was drugged to hell and back at a personal concert with little rehearsal (30th Anniversary Beat It September 7th 2001, specifically the breakdown near the end). If you can find one instance of Michael collapsing on stage in his 30's then I'd be very greatful. You can like her vocal chops better but it's pretty clear Michael had better vocal chops at 10 years old than Beyonce did in her whole career (Who's Loving You on the Ed Sullivan Show), he just didn't flex them as often. Michael's songs are usually quite a bit harder to sing as well. It's impossible to find anyone sing Beat It in it's original key or convincingly cover Earth Song (except Michael obv). It's strange you hype up Beyonce's dancing when you clearly have allegience to a far better dancer, Usher. Beyonce just basically does dance routines, which are good, but none are as complex or compelling as Michael's in a lot of cases (Dangerous, This Is It They Don't Care About Us opening). By comparison Michael constantly has un-choreagraphed strokes of brilliance on stage that completely blow Beyonce's or even his own routines out of the water (The Billie Jean breakdown in Kuala Lumpur is a personal favourite). I don't hate Beyonce, in fact I think there's an argument for her superbowl performance being better (Michael's superbowl is a worse version of the performances he does in concert for the most part). But comparing the artists is a whole different conversation and it's not really a comparison. Beyonce loves Michael as an artist, Michael loves Beyonce as an artist. I don't think they'd appreciate it either.
PRINCE, not only did he do his music he played others. He wasn’t advertising himself he was playing music and to make it better it was raining like hell and his last song was purple rain. Him and his band went out and killed that night. To date the best Super Bowl performance
I agree with your comments on Gaga. It was kinda basic for her - but basic for her is still better and more exciting/creative than many others. I think it came down to her being in her stripped back "acoustic" Joanne era. I can't imagine what she would have done during artpop.
I disagree. There isn’t anything basic about flipping around while simultaneously singing and flying through the air. She has always been about defying expectations, and she did so here by putting her talent front and center over anything conceptual, off-the-wall, or overtly political. Although I do agree that things would’ve been different had the performance happened during an earlier era like Artpop. Although, in my opinion, not necessarily for the better.
Michael Jackson was just best his entry can fade all other half time shows , the way he was standing for 2 minutes and pull off glasses 👓 audience goes even wild. 1,00,000 people attended that's show with 133.4 million live viewers. King of Pop 😎

@@medylemaproductions interesting how we agree on the truth of what you said but you see it as good and I personally think what you listed were the things that made the performance suffer. I personally view it like this. It was literally just the tour he was on, designed for a smaller stage (which for fans familiar with the dangerous tour, makes it nothing too special), He not only lip synced the whole show, I personally don't mind him lip syncing normally but this one was quite ridiculous for me personally, but on top of that, not only were the band also not playing live either but what he used were the literal album versions. Not even edited like mtv, just shortened and ripped straight off the record, So now you strip all those things away and you're left with a very mediocre performance compared to let's say princes half time show or even compared to michaels performances in general and you're then just left with the message part. I can't fault that one, that was truely a insight to who michael was as a person, using that massive platform to spread that. So to me in terms of where michael stands with Superbowl comparisons, he's not the best but in the top 5 in my opinion. I'd say he sits at 3rd. The significance and iconic part of his specific half time show though, which a lot of people don't realise was the iconic thing, is that performance changed what the half time shows were and was the reason we have all these great ones. If not for michaels then that probably wouldn't be the thing we know now. That's my views at least

Well said in respect of The Weeknd. He gave us a spectacular performance. Big production, special effects, and the man himself.

So now you strip all those things away and you're left with a very mediocre performance compared to let's say princes half time show or even compared to michaels performances in general and you're then just left with the message part.
That's my views at least
nobody be talking about what Bono does for charity bruh. he been doing same shit forever…
There is Michael Jackson and there is everyone else
I am sooo happy that the love the King of Pop Michael Jackson is getting, fuq this wack silly list
King
@@mjscarousal It’s not silly, you’re just biased.
Oh yeah, OMG MICHAEL JACKSON IS A GOD AND CANT DO NO WRONG. HES ALL OVER EVERYONE ELSE. 😱😱😐😐😐
Y’all are just mad that MJ is not #1 but your biases aside and actually look at the Super Bowl performance without looking at his numbers, charting and etc. MJ is one of the GOATS but his SB wasn’t all that, be real with yourself.
@@PrinceLeaker he started it dumb .To architect something like that is not easy .
The croud singing the oohs in purple rain chorus brought me tears in my own personal rain. I'm not even really a fan but it was truly magical
Janet has one of the best halftime shows in the history. I still can’t believe how stupid people were to make that nipple incident a scandalous moral issue
The fact Micheal Jacksons wasn't #1 or 2 shows how bad this list is lol I'm sorry 😂
Yall just think that cus hes MJ. Not cus his performance was actually great. Yall worship him cus of the hype around him, not with what hes actually doing
@@tekashiii I don't worship MJ in any way but that was legitimately just a good super bowl halftime show. His has a magnetic charisma to it a lot of these flashy shows he puts up on the top don't have like any character to them.
@@armandomorales3809 you have katy perry who opened her show with a giant golden lion and beyoncé singing from the top of her lungs but yeah MJ's "charisma" is better than them ok 😒😒😒
@@tekashiii Lets get this straight, Beyonce does not have global hits compared to Michael and all she did was strunt and swing her wig... What was so great about her performance???? Michael had MUCH more creativity in his performance with less technology. Yall on that bullshit for real.
@@mjscarousal what does having global hits have to do with their performance??? Is Michael the greatest? Yes, i believe so. But were talking about half time shows here, AND THAT ALONE. No matter how many hits or success MJ had, his half time show was just him lip syncing for 10 minutes while beyoncé was out there serving live vocals hitting insane notes while dancing. MJ is great but his half time show isnt. Stop being blinded by his name that you dont think fairly anymore.
The Prince show was something magic in itself. God was surely watching the show from above
This year's halftime show, Shakira & JLO, Bruno Mars, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, and Motown are my top favorites.
Holy L
JLO and Shakira’s half time show doesn’t get the credit it deserves.
They’re top 10.💀
Madonna's entrance with Vogue >>>>
Madonna's ending with Like a Prayer >>>>
My favorite is Coldplay, Bruno Mars, and Beyonce
When Prince played Purple Rain in the rain I swear those were tears from the Heaven. 💜
Only an artist like Prince could have enough clout to get God to handle the special effects.
Considering Prince was always spiritual beyond matrix of religion and one of the few artists to constantly credit Jesus and GOD. GOD rewarded him.
Note: Prince show also wasn't just the world. The entire universe was watching something that couldn't be said about all the other shows. GOD provided the effects and put the show on different frequency...how else could everything go off perfectly that should have ended in utter disaster. GOD approved
Bruno’s one is way to low. But I know you ain’t a fan of Bruno so I expected you to be biased against it anyway
Shakira and jlo did a phenomenal job. It’s my favorite
God that Prince show never ceases to amaze me. I always cry a bit, nothing will ever top him.
FINALLY APPRECIATION FOR JLO AND SHAKIRA, growing up with shakira and jlo, and shakira being my first crush knowing all the songs they played this is by far my favorite show
I will give Prince the best halftime show. But Michael should be right before at second place. NO QUESTION!
I can't wait for this years show, no matter how it goes im too much of a fan of each artist to care. Still hoping we get an epic performance.
I had no clue they were the performers until I watched this video. Dr Dre is the Nick Fury of rap and they are the fucking Avengers man, it has the potential of being a legendary concert.
My top 5 Superbowl Halftime Shows:
5. Beyonce
4. The Weeknd
3. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J Blige, Kendrick Lamar, and Eminem
2. Prince
1. Michael Jackson
I felt bruno was a little too low for me. Don't get me wrong when I watched it recently I wished they chose him after 24k magic, but he still had plenty of hits. He was one of only few performers where I forgot all about the football stuff and truly was enjoying my time watching the halftime.
My biggest problem with the Stone’s halftime show isn’t the inclusion of the new stuff, is the fact that the sound mixing was shit
As a huge Beyoncé fan… I appreciate that the ONLY performance that topped her was Prince! I remember both performances so vividly and them being the top 2 makes so much sense. I remember being nervous for Prince when it rained but it worked so well. And I remember being nervous about Bey because no one knew what she was going to do. 😂😂😂
Beyoncé made the same tired stuff she always does along a douzen of black female dancers
@@ginasousabranco5637 ????????????
Prince performance just life changing, nothing is needed. Just him and 2 dancer in a stage singing as a fking greatest singer in the world just no way to compare to other performance. God knows what he needed and giving him the best moment in the world to celebrate his artistry.
Prince is goated
Prince at #1 is a no brainer. That dude was dripping with talent and swag… and on that day, he was dripping actual rain water. The Music industry lost its mojo when he passed.
I knew prince was gonna be number one but when you stayed talking about him tears came to my eyes
Jim Belushi might not be able to sing but he absolutely killed it starring in the 1987 movie The Principal 💯 💯
Totally agree about the shakira J lo one. Especially Shakira. You can just tell her work ethics is incredible. She danced. Singed. Played the Guitar and Rocked the drums while having so much genuine fun through all of it
Loveeee Shakira
She didnt play the guitar lmao. It was just a prop for her
@@SriLankanStuff Shakira was a rock artist in Colombia before she made it big and yes she can play drums and she does it a lot in her shows
@@6ftofmisery636 "she didnt play the drums"
@@SriLankanStuff yes she did. ua-cam.com/video/_YUnSEsUc3o/v-deo.html why would you doubt that? Is it because she is female popstar?
Pretty spot on… only change for me is, Id put Shakira/JLO into the top 3, above Katy. I might be biased though since Im latino
The Best Halftime Shows Was
Michael Jackson &
Prince.
I Believe This Will Set The Bar High For Hip Hop Next Year Have Outkast Perform With Top Shelf Acts From The South.
As much as I love Outkast, I’ve heard that Andre 3000 is kind of a recluse nowadays. If that is true it would be kind of hard to not only get him to reunite with Big Boi, but also perform the god damn halftime show. I would love to see it tho.
