    "I learned to play the drums, before I had a drum kit. I was a mental drummer" - Keith Moon.

    • @infrasleep
      @infrasleep 10 місяців тому +4

      I was just 6 when I watched Top of the Pops with the Who playing "I can See for Miles" He was the only drummer who mashed his kit-all the others just seemed to do tapping with a few light hits on the cymbals-I loved it . His kit was well beaten up! Now I think about how totally original and powerful is the drum track to ICSFM-it's not background, it's part of the tune. All his stuff was. There's been no one close to it in the near 50 years since KM's gone.

    • @CameraBryan
      @CameraBryan 3 роки тому +8

      The duct tape started during concert tours when Keith Moon couldn't keep the headphones on while playing on stage. He needed the headphones as monitors to hear the rest of the band. Bob Heil, who's company Heil Sound was doing the sound system, came up with the tape idea. (Bob Heil's also the one who made the talk boxes for Peter Frampton and Joe Walsh.)

      @@EligarEsooI could watch the earlier color footage of the OG “4” (just take a look at my channel uploads; specifically my most recent shady-shorts lol & u will quickly pickup on my issues with Daltrey 😝) live in concert.
      The 1970 Isle of Wight footage is a master class - especially Pete doubling as sound engineer.
      But whenever Keith Moon is in frame, it’s incredibly hard to pay attention to anyone else because his playing is so… surreal 🤷🏻‍♀️ (for lack of any better adjectives) - like a force of nature 😮
      Watching the OG band towards “the end”/1974ish - it becomes harder and harder to watch Keith Moon…in the same way it was extremely uncomfortable to watch Any Winehouse forget the words to all the song she wrote about her own trauma 😞

    When I used to listen to Tommy's Acid Queen, I would hear the screams in the background and thought it was supposed to be a dramatization of Tommy reacting to the acid. What I didn't realize was that, no, it was just Keith playing the drums, as you can plainly hear in this isolated track.

    When you went to see the WHO you went to see Keith the 'juggler' too! In the early days at the WHO shows he had sticks flying in the air, catching them on beat as they destroyed their instruments by the climax of the show. He whirled and twirled those sticks to the beat. He had sticks that reflected light so you could see them. He went through quite a bit of drum sticks in a show. Exactly. Join drum & bugle corps if you want to play in front of technical judges, or join Rush/Dream Theater if you want your audience to critically analyze your playing. True rock and roll is meant to be played for audiences who recognize that the best bands are greater than the sum of their imperfect parts.

      Keith Moon's peers seemed to regard him as one of, if not the greatest, drummers ever. You'd think if he was as overrated as some claim, they'd have had a different opinion. I guess those who knock him must just be better judges than the cream of the rock music industry. Or wrong. It's a tough one to call.

  • @vaughanclooney

    It is him. He used a hi-hat on this song, you can see from the video. This was his last album and the hard living was beginning to show.
    This shows, while he was a brilliant drummer, his timing wasn't great. It was his pure energy and natural style that will never be matched. I've heard a lot of drummers try to imitate Keith and invariably they don't 'get it' - the fill that finishes at 1:12 is typical - no one else can imitate this kind of fill and what you hear there is very 'Keith'.

      Apparently he would scream, shout and swear playing his drum set, whether live or in the studio. Other rock drummers do too, I think it might be the same thing as why some great guitarists grimace during solos kinda tuning in to the instrument/beat or soul of the composition.

    When we were learning how to play instruments in the late 70's early 80's, we of course listened to all the greats, Zep, Who, Sabbath, Doors, etc. We never compared, they were all in the same rare air, Bonham, Moon, Ward, Jones, Butler, Entwhistle, etc... I don't understand where it comes from when people feel the need to compare. They were all great and their style helped make the band they were in.
    Im hoping that happens again with music someday. Such an exciting time.

    Listen to the number of times he misses the beat, misses entire drums, it's NOT good.

    that's what Keith used to say:
    "I'm the best Keith Moon Type drummer in the world"
    he had developed a new style of drumming combining many different influences and then melding them into his own, he could do this because he did not have a music teacher telling him he could not, that it wasn't proper, ot the right way to do it
    as far as I am concerned there is no right way
    learn the fundamentals and develop your style, learn as many grooves as you can, country, swing, rock, fusion

    @StretchPhotography this video was made for The Kids Are Alright (though I think it was first shown on Top of the Pops!), where the band play live in the studio, so it's different to the LP version, which I think the drum track is from. Technical skill is something anyone can learn. It's not important. Creativity is. Don't forget he played like no other drummer had ever played before him in the sixties: loud, wild, unpredictable, at the forefront. He is the first rock drummer, in that aspect. There is not a drummer on this world today that doesn't owe him thanks for making the drums MORE than just a way to keep time, including Bonham or Ringo for example, who've both admitted to this many times.
