Roy Buchanan - The Messiah Will Come Again

  • Just a smile,
    just a glance
    The Prince of darkness
    he just walked past...
There's been a lot of people
and they've had a lot to say
    But this time
I'm gonna tell it my way:
    There was a town
A strange little town, they called 'The World'
it was a sad, lonely little town.
'Till one day a stranger appeared
And their hearts rejoiced, and the sad little town
    was happy again...
But there were some that doubted; they disbelieved, so they mocked him
And our stranger, he went away
Now the said little town that was sad yesterday
    is a lot sadder today...
I've walked in a lot of places that I never should have been
But I know that the Messiah, he will come again...

God this man was special. I have been listening to music since 1961 this is by far the greatest guitarist that I have ever heard play. Like he's from another reality. Mind blowing skill

Not sure this is Roy's best performance of The Messiah but must be very close. For Roy is was just business as usual, another night playing in a small club, but for most guitarists, even for the best of the best his playing was out of this world.

I've listened to this performance 101 times. I don't feel the crowd were being disrespectful, (at first I thought that)..they were just drunk & high enthusiastic. Roy put them in their place with a "out the box" improvisation. They cheered, then went speachless in awe.!

Nice Post! Saw Roy many times with the Snake Stretchers. Worked the same club with him back in the day. When he played "everyone" stopped and listened.

@SnakeSSSStretcher Thank you so much for uploading this incredible performance by Roy. The tape ran out but what followed must have been breathtaking...Roy was on fire here. The bad crowd seemed to inspire him. They were silenced when he went into overdrive.
This is in my top 5 all time great performances. Thank you again for this iconic recording. Peace.

Wow...what a shame the tape ran out. Thanks for uploading this masterpiece Snake. Despite the poor quality video (product of the time) at least it was in color and the person behind the camera did a good job staying on the action on Roy's guitar (too bad he pulled back in the middle for a minute), and despite the poor quality audio (at least it was loud and clear), and despite or maybe because of the typical unruly roadside bar crowd this is a spectacular video, because it shows Roy performing with his usual aplomb, eloquence and grace amidst the rowdy atmosphere of the venue he most often played. This man was a great musician that was greatly under heard and appreciated in his own time. I'm privileged to have been able just hear his music, but even more so for having seen him do it. RIP Roy and all the best to his family.

Hello. Got into Roy just in the last few months. Wish I had been aware of him when he was still around. What a player! Have listened to many of the Messiah versions on line and on CD. Would have given much to have been at Swift's that night for this performance. He clearly came to play that night. Has anybody else made the connection to the McLaughlin/Santana "The Life Divine" from their 1973 album "Love, Devotion, Surrender"? The unfinished solo on this "Messiah" track is highly reminiscent of that piece. They were contemporaries, so either could have picked up ideas from the other. Or either could have gone back to John Coltrane's 1964/65 "A Love Supreme" for inspiration. All three pieces set the standard for intense and impassioned artistry. Why do people like Coltrane and Buchanan die before their time? Thanks SnakeSSSStretcher for posting this awesome performance.

@naguiat1 - to my knowledge it is a 1953 Fender Telecaster (that was his most played guitar). roy buchanan's harmonics were often referred to as "sonic fuzz". you all know he played with tone, techniques and effects way before all the special effects pedals you see so much onstage, nowdays. I think roy got the best of almost everything he could ie: the comment "i know why i am here". they say he challenged jimi hendrix to a "pick off". jimi hendrix declined to accept.

Well it appears to be a Tele body with some other neck. It was not his main squeeze “Nancy”, a 1953 Tele.
