I was born in and grew up in Boerne but when i moved to Kendalia for 2 years, me and my mom would stop off in Bergheim almost every day after school on the way back home. I would always get a bag of chips and a glass bottle coke because that was one of the few places around there to find one lol
I've been in country stores all over the state from Rio Medina to Buda, Refugio to Kress. Loved every one of them. I rarely pass up an opportunity to visit one. I always find something I have to have.
This is great to see! I remember my dad driving from Blanco, Texas just to buy hats and his Wrangler slim fit jeans there. He once bought me a hair dryer there that I still have and still works. IT'S 33 YEARS OLD AND STILL WORKS!
Lol Ray... I still have make mirror with lights on both sides. Still works,70's, and a blow dryer. How funny. But not funny, the way VERY expensive things don't last these last few years...

@@snepNL I'd be interested in knowing also. I remember a small Mom & Pop store close to where I lived as a lil Button. I can still see with my minds eye, mom or dad signing the little slip of paper that had their items and prices listed. Good ol' days.
I've lived just 3 miles from Bergheim for twenty years. Sorry to report the Jones family has sold the property, but that also means a well-deserved rest for Stanley and Charlene. A small business campus seems to be emerging there now, but without much change to the buildings, at least so far. Since the store itself is a state-recognized historic place, I imagine it will be preserved. On the other hand, the nearby intersection of TX 46 and FM 3351 is being rapidly developed. It's not unrealistic to think that the day is not far off when this quaint little spot will be just another San Antonio suburb. Why do people flock to the Hill Country to live like sardines in densely packed subdivisions of tract homes? There are at least a half dozen other places in Texas where they can live like that, not destroy any natural beauty, AND be closer to the big city amenities they seem to love so much. Sigh ....
I myself grew up down the road, move away, a quite a few years later I drove there to see how our old house and to my surprise the traffic was Crazy. How things change. Maybe this weekend I'll make my final drive to visit the old Store.
With the natural beauty of the area and the flight of city dwellers, for reasons of overcrowding and political decay in their previous cities, these places soon become the very thing they fled. So sad to see the spoilage of quaint peaceful communities due to all the craziness going on. Enjoy while you have it.
It's odd that corporations who cram climate change down our throats, leave their huge carbon footprints all over the hillcountry when they choose, out of 50 states, to move their corporation to one of the hottest places in the country. Seems pretty damn hypocritical to me. They helped create the circumstances they're running from. If climate change was an actual thing, they wouldn't have moved, along with a ton of employees, to a place where the power usage will be quadrupled. I think they know the truth. CO2 isn't a problem. As the earth spins, it flings all that extra CO2 right out the hole in the ozone. Thank you spray cans and freon.
Thank you sir appreciate the video I do hope your family still running that store a hundred years from now. And thank you great state of Texas. I came out from San Francisco California two years ago. My grand parents owned a county store in Freedom NH and I spent my summers there with them. My grandfather could do just about anything, in the back of the store he had a butcher shop, and deli, on the side of the store there was an area where he could work on cars. He also was on the fire dept, drove a school bus, and my grandmother ran the store, PO, and was the town clerk. When my Grand father died they closed the school and had to use the buses to transport people to and from the church because there was no room to park for miles.
This is awesome. I love how it is still old. We have a local Amish store that was real small, crowded and dark. Just real old fashioned. Well that have done so well they bought a new store because of the tourist and not it is wide open, new, and bright. All the charm that us locals loved about it is gone.
