- This week, we break out the second go kart we have ever worked on. It had been sitting for a while after the gas tank fell off and the carburetor got gummed up by old gas. We had forgotten how much we enjoyed this kart.

I have an identical kart with an 8hp briggs on it. i absolutely love the thing! The frame style is called a streaker. I recommend putting a larger front axle in and raising up the front end an inch or two to reduce drag on the front end. It makes for a better yard/off road kart without effecting the CG much, and will still drift all day.

I want a simple kart just like this one. I often find myself on Craigslist looking for a good rolling chassis to slap a 212 on. It's on my LONG list of wants, anyway.

It's a Manco American Express. I have one except it's not a Manco. Mine is a Sears orange crate that was made by Manco and sold by Sears. Ya vintage go karts!!

Cole Borman mine has a yoke off of a very old airplane for a steering wheel now. It looks like the 3/4 wheels you can buy but much cooler.

The Farmville fall consignment auction that is this coming Saturday (unless postponed for the hurricane) has a Dingo go-kart which is the offroad version of the American Express go-kart you have in this video. They are built off the same basic frame. Last one they had went for $125. Just thought you might want to check that auction out.

CarsandCameras I'd love to see a Haley powered kart, though going 100 mph requires pretty serious hardware like brakes from a motorcycle, seat belts, and balls to do it

American Express by MANCO. My first go-kart had a 5 horse briggs that kept snapping the carb off then bought a Harbor freight clone Honda 5 horse ported and polished the head stiffer springs with stainless valves governor removal ghetto header drilled the jet got a pod filter from GPS. Does about 50 mph with a light person but with me only about 45. A big help was I rebuilt the front spindles from thicker wall tubing with a bigger inside diameter then made a nylon sleeve and drilled and tapped grease zerks. Also cut down the length and put a really stiff little spring on top. Handles a lot better!

don't touch it, its awesome the way it is, I had one but it was orange and had the confederate flag painted on the bottom of it, it was crazy fun..you guys rock man can't get enough of your vids, I'm 58 and been building stuff my whole life, currently a 4wd go cart on 31 in tires powered by a 230 susuki quad engine should be sweet.

I love the "vintage" kart, but it needs several feet, of one inch tubing. At least stretch it far enough, that your knees stop hitting your elbows. It looks really fast. I know Ike doesn't want to paint it, but I think it would look cool stretched about 18 inches, frame painted Predator red, with polished aluminum wheels.The black steering wheel, the new black seat, and the tires would break the color up enough. Turn the steering wheel around to where you can see it's a Grant. Black roll bar, shaped like the one on the Murray.

Hey i have a question, is it possible to put a governor back on a motor?
If you really wanted to you could, but I wouldn't recommend it at all.
CarsandCameras well my bike wont stop lifting up and its getting really hard to do dig races. What should i do to avoid wheelies
A higher gear ratio will make it have less torque and a higher top speed. So if you want less umph (or in your case wheelies) and more speed, then a higher gear ratio will probably be best.
Also the governor limits the RPM's at around 3,600, and off the line (unless you have a torque converter) the engine isn't revving that high. So putting the governor back on will only make it have a slower top speed, not have less low-down torque.

Nick Kluger i dont have a torque converter, its just a small block with header rejetted carb and its getting frustrating when i cant do a nice pass because it stay on a wheelie and slows it down.
when they showed the time on the phone it was the exact time in real life for me.

My mower with a 20hp swapped in place of the 12hp kills the drift circuit now,the 12hp wasn't enough to keep it from being sketchy at 20mph+

Since this cart wants to drift so much more than the others you should modify it to be dedicated to drifting. It's only natural to use something for what it's good for.

rig up a shot of alcohol! use an old windshield wiper fluid sprayer right before the carb! that puppy will rip on top end. thoes engins are cheap so give her the what for!!

I got a klipper kart with a stage 1 predator on it and KNOBBY TIRES and it drifts ridiculously easy on grass AND some concrete

it would be cool to see some of the cool performance parts in that 212. Maybe a higher compression piston, a bit of headwork, upgraded con rod and that bad ass billet flywheel. Show us how to build an engine that can handle the ungoverned high RPM!! Do a whole engine rebuild episode. Like those Spike TV car shows. Engine power is one of my favorites. I love it when they build up weird engines.

We race go carts in the class I race I use the 212 engine and there's so many thing you can do to the motor.. Advance the timing, drill the jets, different breather, put a different cam in it and depending on the clutch and the sprocket them things will fly

I have a go kart similar to this and I put drift sleeves on it. It's fun but definitely needs more steering angle. How would u get a greater steering angle? Or is it really not attainable in a go kart?
There is a bracket on the steering shaft that the tie rods connect to. By lengthening this piece it will move the rod father out& be more responsive thus being better for drifting

Had that cart as a kid in the late 70s. Mine came from Sears, was orange with a yellow and white seat, and branded as an Orange Krate. Great kart that my friends and I actually rode up until we were in college.
Also had a similar thing happen with the steering wheel on mine. I bailed as well and the cart went over a small hill. I had my late Grandfather weld an aftermarket auto steering wheel to the steering shaft.
i just found out the kart i have is a orange krate. they are sooo pretty. mine has been molested to hell and back sadly. id like to restore it some day.

Man, I had one of those with a rebel flag painted on the floor. Couldn't keep the front tires on the ground with an 8 horse Briggs. They're just as you said Ike, light and nimble. Coolness indeed

im telling you again.... get a Partner R12 chainsaw engine from 1960. I have it on my gokart... and boi its fast af.

RPM: around 6000 PS: Only bad thing is, its kinda hard to find parts for those.

You guys really should go with a full cammed build. I have a 212 with a flywheel, rod, and 308 cam. It makes for a MEAN SOB with a 6''' tav 2 30 series. Add the .625 bored carb and you should have one mean monster of a 212. Even with my stock bore carb jetted with an E-tube, I can run a straight gear 10/60 on a 15'' tire and have the power to reach 45mph without the TAV(currently a broken driven due to a faulty yellow spring). ALSO. 9000 rpm sounds amazing out of this thing.

You can tell John really doesn't know what he's doing LOL when the carburetor gets gummed up you just clean it out it takes years and years of sitting in order for it to get destroyed to be replaced 99% of the time you can just clean it out and buy the reload kit
Make a real drift cart of it. Some mods to the engine, a e-brake and bigger angel in the front. Pleas try some pipes on the rear wheels. Awesome show boys! Thanks from Norway

you guys make the best vids in the world. thx to you guys i now have 3 go karts. well I've had the clark go kart for ages. the murray is my brothers and my 2 seater extremely adapted for extreme off road and its black so its like ugly but bigger and 150cc engine and it looks like its a lot better at off roading i mean i love your ugly go kart but it always gets stuck and its kinda the opposite for me because the murray doesn't get stuck but struggles and my go kart goes through like its a smooth road. by the way my brothers is a 200cc engine so his is more powerful than mine. so yeah YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@carsandcameras why don't you use a small Honda motorbike engine, like from the c90/c110/atc or the modern pit bike equivalent? Some are auto, some are semi auto and some are full manual, so you could go for a full clutch set up, or at least gears. If one of the 90cc 8hp engines will propel a full grown man and a small motorbike upto 50mph, imagine what it will do in a light weight go cart frame? CHEEEAH!

my carb doesnt have a fuel cut line. Is this a problem or should i just turn the engine off electrically?

Also, once you guys are messing with same type vehicles, you could make your own dynamometer, so you can play with engines and compare them, see what modification will make it faster, what will make it more reliable, stuff like that.. It's easy thing to build, would cost under $100 if you're okay to re-use a scrap metal.. Let me know if you're interested.
arc racing mod2 cheater cam, 10.8lbs valve springs, open air filter, header pipe, .036 size jet with the 140 e-tube(they make a kit), arc racing billet rod and flywheel so you can turn the higher rpm without damaging anything, and bore it .10 over

I think an awesome subject for comparison would be a race between AMEX and say one of the F1 race karts. Mix in a little pavement, little dirt, little mud. LIke a rally cross race lol. I"m still uber jelly you guys have the space to ride the karts right outside your front door. I have to travel a long way to be able to take anything out. One of these days, I'll get a kart and do a video build series. Love the build!
May i suggest you build up a vintage engine for it? Clinton panther A490, west bend 820, power products AH58/AH82, or Mcculloch engine would be awesome

A friend of mine owned it and he chopped it in half (for who knows why) and then bailed on his plans and gave me the kart.

I would leave it the way it is. Nice reliable vintage cart. I know even you guys don't want to mess with a good thing. Maybe you could build another drift cart. American Express 2.0 !
If you guys want to put the "american express" and red and blue stripes on the floorpan get in touch with Dennis at Gokart Alley. I believe he has a graphics company near him that reproduced the AmEx graphics. Keep the patina (as Ike mentioned) and put a new floor decal on it and it'd be pretty sweet.
Did he say that if your carburetor gets gummed up, you'll need to buy a new one? I disagree. Just take the bowl off; clean it, the jet, and the float, put it back together, and voila, your carb will work like new.
You should pvc the rear wheels and camber out the fronts with some negative camber

Give it more steering angle
And give it a billet flywheel and better rods so you can rev out and not worry as much
As well as better springs because above that 3.6 k stock you run into A LOT of valve float and that kills power and reliability
You won't need to buy a new carb. You probably don't even need a kit. Disassembly and a good soak in an ultrasonic cleaner filled with carb cleaner and all that turpentine will disappear. Yup, resurrecting an old vid.
It has so much room in the back that it's almost asking for a SECOND 212 back there. Wouldn't that be cool? A twin-engine go-kart!
New all 4 tires. Get rid of the rust and paint/touch up where it's needed. Freshen up the steering and make sure it is solid. New Steering wheel. New sprocket. New brakes if needed. Clean the kart up and make it look nice. That's what I would do with it. If you take care of it, it will take care of you for years to come.

I have the same go kart and restored it 10 yrs ago and I painted hugger orange with a 5 horse Honda engine and it flys it goes stupid fast and from my knowledge it is a Sears roper gokart from 1969-1972
