if we're discussing ridiculous spells, s1 of The Magicians gives us a storm of playing cards and random glass manipulation, neither of which allows anyone to solve a problem or create an opportunity
@@luckyowl6432 that's all well and good, i'm just saying the magic isn't what makes The Order a weaker tv series than The Magicians if one wants to make that argument ; the magic system in The Magicians is one of my least favorite in the urban fantasy genre because it's too soft and the Order's is actually a bit harder, tho it's still much too soft for my taste -
@@nikoblack1272 I wouldn’t say it is soft. They had a wellspring to use magic. When that was drained tainted they were losing it… the magic in the order is just boring like can you even name an interesting spell? They couldn’t even keep their own rules
@@Kristyybug the wellspring is the source of magical energy but it's not the source of magical ability because not every human has the ability to tap into it, but that's not what makes it soft to me ; what makes the magic of Magicians soft is that i have no idea of its limitations or costs, except with some specific spells - the magic in the Order doesn't bore me any more than that of the Magicians, they're equally random in their effects and costs, so i never know what shouldn't be possible in any scenario, but at least the Order's magic HAS a cost in sacrifice, even if it's not consistent ~
Ngl only watched for the werewolf-action. But looking back in the show i wish the story was written better cause it was rather confusing later on with how the show magic-society worked
I was actually kinda interested on this one. It was not really good, but it was different from the other stuff that i was watching. And then it was cancelled. Silly me for caring, i guess. 😂
Brakebills isn't a meritocracy because magicians don't earn the power they have, some humans just randomly develop magic and even Fogg doesn't give a reason for this ; the Order is much closer to being a meritocracy because the magic can theoretically be learned by anyone -
How come Netflix continues such bad shows like this and Emily in Paris but they canceled actual good shows like Lockwood and Co, Shadow and Bone. I could go on.
I remember when I first watched this show, there was a scene in season 2, and a character spoke Irish to cast a spell. And I paused the show and played it back and rolled my eyes. I hate it when shows use Irish culture to be all witchy and pagan. Like they just put the spell into Irish google translate and called it a day.
I still carry the opinion that anyone who read The Magicians series by Lev Grossman would not be a fan of the show. Bc that plot was so fckng random and you could tell they were just making sh*t up towards the middle and end, which is sad bc the books had a great plot and pretty good conclusion where Quentin doesn't die for no reason at the end.
Jack sounds more like archie from the edgy riverdale reboot, than a loner and smart. Which fair enough if they did play him as charming himbo whom bizarre things happen to, but he isnt?! hell he could be that with a specific gor mysthical objects?! And it sounds like it really needed morre selfaware fun and take itself less serious?! A college students doing dumb stuff with magic could be fun in itself. You just nee to limit it somehow

Agreed, sacrifice as the basis for magic is a badass system with so much to explore. Reminds me of the time I thought supernatural was going to go down the route of souls and suffering being the power behind witchcraft. I want to see this system done right

They are kind of ridiculous in The Magicians but they are played (lol) more seriously in the books which is what that first episode is referencing
