    Don't ever paint your bricks.
A brick is a 2 way breathable substrate.
Bricks are designed to desipate moisture as soon as it recieves it.
Painting will block/fill all the pores.
    Instead, stain your brick.
    I am a 3rd generation painter.
Been tought by the old school guys.
I am currently in my 16th year of being in this trade.
    Please don't paint your brick.
You may end up with "dry rot" behind the brick.
Best to use oil based stain.
    Never stain the grout lines.
Stain comes in all colors here in canada.
    Hope I helped.
    Thanks for reading lol

@@russellallen5482 yes they do. Sherwin-Williams uses Loxon. First to use a masonry conditioner. In my opinion it's best if used with sprayer because it's a very watery. It sucks into the pores and then you use loxon paint. Loxon is a masonry paint.
If you're doing a block wall and you want to fill in the pores as long as it's above ground you can use PrepRite Block Filler. Fills in the pores of the concrete block wall and then you go over top of it with a good quality paint two additional coats. Works wonders.

We have a brick patio, 12 x 12 inch sq bricks, looks like at one time they were red brick but someone (previous owner) painted the whole patio and then someone painted them again, so there are 2 layers of paint. needless to say after a few years the paint is peeling horribly...our patio looks like a brown (top layer) and light blue (bottom layer) Holstein cow. Its awful...the grout is cracking where the paint was applied thicker...its a mess
Is there a resurfacing product that can be applied over this that will not peel like paint?

      As a 3rd generation painter.
      16 years exp.
      Do not paint bricks.
      Stain them instead.
But if you've already painted your bricks, it's best to use an oil based primer.
Than hit your 2 top coats with "elastomeric" paint.
This way you've created a breathable coating.
Oil primer serves as a stain blocker and filler. ( effectively wrecking the brick.) But oil base primers are key to most concrete substrates.
Elastomeric makes your surface water/shock resistant even for 30 years or so if applied correctly.
If primed in oil and elastomeric is applied on top, the elastomeric will essentially do nothing.
But your bricks should be as smooth as glass.
I reccomened never painting brick however, as a brick is designed to rid of moisture as fast as it recieves it.
      Painting brick fills the pores.

Dont ever never paint bricks or stone walls . Paint or stain will never hold up to weather and temp changes threw out the year . With in two years the pain will start chip and peel off in places . Then over time the paint starts to fade . Then what you will have a bigger mess that needs to be painted again and again . That will get tiring over time . If you dont like your bricks color or just dont like bricks at all you can cover it with stone Veneer's . here the thing about painted wall once the wall is painted it will take a lot of money to get it back to clean brick again and you have to get the bricks clean and all paint off before you Veneer your brick wall . Another thing you may not like the brick color or colors and most people may not like your color when it is time to sell . But every one loves the look of stone . So please not ever paint or stain stone or brick . Never worked before and never work now .

    • @JesusRamirez-hv5wj
      @JesusRamirez-hv5wj 6 років тому +4

You can paint them and make it last for years.. Apply two coats of
" wet look sealer " after painting the bricks
( you find it at homedepot ) the sealer will make the paint glue to the bricks and will protect the paint from rain and sun. Also if you don't wanna paint your bricks but want them to look new again. Acter you clean the bricks. ( give a day or 2 ti dry if you used water ) and put two coats of " wet look sealer " to the bricks . if you painted them i suggest 3 coats of sealer. 2 coats a day after you paint them. And a week later apply the third coat. I use alot of products that painters don't even use or have an idea. As an example when painting outside facial. I put water proof on the 45's to prevent wood demage or paint peeling from everyday morning breeze

I am British I'm a duel national , born in Britain oldham to be precise, you are are right, many houses in England are pretty old, but to "me" it is the red brick attached row houses that to "me" look so dreary and worn out , if i owned one now i would defiantly give it some paint , if anything another reddish colour just make it look better, preferably to"me" i would give it a pastel colour, but i really don't see the problem in wanting to make something look nicer, it is a lick of paint on brick, it's not going to destroy the house. or cause millions of dollars worth of damage. I'm used to everything being new, including my house i had in Oregon that was 5 years old, was a verryyy nice house , very spacious and modern, with a red lava gravel, and a garage that could fit 2 full sized trucks, and 1 Harley Davidson and 2 crotch rockets , with room.

Painting a brick house is ALWAYS a BIG MISTAKE! The beauty of bare brick is the many decades of maintenance-free service. Yes, I know it's cool and trendy, but it's a huge dis-service in the long run. The current or future owners will have to scrape and repaint and as the coats of paint accumulate the shorter the life of the paint. Eventually, ALL the paint needs to be sandblasted or removed with paint stripper. And then probably the mortar joints repaired (tuck pointing). So PLEASE just spare the home and future owners of this horrible fad!
