- It appears elections are merely held to legitimize the elite control. And this is a major factor behind low turnout in Pakistan’s elections. People seem to be very well aware of elites’ modus operandi. No wonder a large majority of electorates never took part in elections. Those who use their right to vote, a significant number of them were being coerced or pressured. Therefore, our electoral system seems to have no relationship with democracy.
About the speaker:
Sarwar Bari heads Pattan Development Organization, which has been contributing to further the interest of the marginalized, the deprived and the underrepresented communities of Pakistan. Also, he is a columnist and an analyst.

What nonsense!!! Just because Modi has been elected to power as PM in India, does that mean democracy has declined???
Pakistanis have a personal grudge towards Modi and his policies, and because of this, they find fault in anything/everything with him and with today's India, which is not at all true. He is an elected candidate. He did not come to power by any other means!!!
BTW, union has weakened in India over the years, that is because of strengthening economy nothing else and people have been losing trust in communism as these unions are usually backed by communist parties.
Such debates bring some spoiled, half learned crooks to discussions like this guy in Pakistan.

How does election of Modi and Trump equal to decline in democracy? Both were elected in a free and fair election. Please keep your political biases aside.
And a correction, indian EVMs do have a paper audit trail that a voter can check after casting vote.
This gentleman has very little knowledge about EVM used in Indian Election. He should read about VVPAT. He has even little knowledge about the election system of India. He is saying that (so-called) Pakistani EVM is superior to other EVMs used around the world.😂
When intellectuals have this level of knowledge, what can we expect from common men in Pakistan?
VVPAT is just a receipt. How do you ensure that the vote was transmitted and counted correctly without any meddling.
@@ibratnak Because some EVMs are selected randomly and number of votes each candidate gets in EVM is matched with number of receipts from VVPAT. Throughout this process and counting of votes representatives of each candidate are present there.

It is not correct assumption to target pm modi as a anti democratic force. PM modi elected twice with majority on his own. Voter turnout is more than 60% which is far better if you consider size and scale of election. PM modi didn't dined any one on base of religious beliefs, even he bring out schem and mechanism which are more IT based. You rejecting the muslim vote which he got in last two election. How learned person like you make such generalized comments.

Indian EVM machines also show a slip that comes out only after the vote is registered. That show party symbol. It is called VVPAT
As an indian i think less populated countries can run countries well through democratic ways, and populated countries should use PR system in local elections with more powers and subjects alloted to them, state government should have limited powers and union government should work mainly on defence, communication and external affairs.
