    Just wanted to say thank you for this video! It’s fantastic. I have the Naish 5.3 and a 110 board so everything you said made perfect sense! I’m struggling finding the right learning conditions. Either wind is to light and water is nice and smooth, or the wind is strong and water is a choppy mess. I’m learning on the ocean so the intimidation factor of being blown down wind or out is scary! Thanks for these and I really find them helpful!!! Next adventure is Kiteboarding!!! Can’t wait! Love the channel!

    Howdy from TX via CA. Better late than never! Here I am trying wing foiling after 40 years surfing. My first session was exactly like you described in your video. I got wrecked! lol Too many unfamiliar moving parts to manage at one time. So I'm gonna use your strategy and familiarize myself with one thing at a time. Thanks for the video!

      @@TheOKKiteboarder I went out today in very light wind, on flat water, with a SUP (with centerboard fin), and a 4.2m Slingwing. I was able to go cross wind but it was still a chore managing the wing and staying upright. Overall a much better go than the 1st time. Next session I will familiarize myself with the hydrofoil. Thanks for the tips!

    So many people are into foiling of all types. I'm a plateaued kiter of 5yrs (skills are stuck at intermediate) with decades of former windsurfing experience. I haven't foiled in any way, shape, or form yet, but am really interested in wingfoiling as it looks like a great combination of the windsurfing and kitesurfing advantages. I realize some people think it's dumb looking, but the more time goes by the more positive things I keep hearing about it.

I'm a beginner with wing and foil - both together super challenging. Your videos are helping me a lot. What makes your videos so helpful and encouraging is you share failures and not being embarrassed , safety is first - so awesome I can learn from you , big thank you . Please Please keep doing what you love and love what you do . And last but not least - this is the best instructional video series for winging the foil Ive found online !!!!! Very professional done ! Well the joys of being a rookie! I am enjoying the journey and I am experiencing exactly what you said. This is not easy to learn. I've made all the mistakes well, not all the mistakes. I am keeping my wing well away from any shish kebab opportunities. But, letting go with the front hand that's a good move! You find out right away why that's a bad idea! Walk of shame? Oh yeah, nothing but downwind and walk back. it's OK! I'm loving it.
      At least I've been out in the lake now three times at the time of year when otherwise I wouldn't have stuck my big toe in. i've watched your videos, I've gone out and had those experiences, then watched the videos again and they seem to open right up and have even more meaning. It's terrific!

      I don't really get it from a kiteboarder perspective, outside of convenience in set up and go. I think a better transition would be from windsurfer to wing surfer/foiler but that is just me. I know its gaining popularity and thats hard to beat. I would do winging on a skateboard or landboard.

    I remember seeing a very similar wing in a book about ice skating 30-40 years ago. The main difference was that instead of an inflatable frame it had a rigid frame but the shape and size were almost the same. I never tried it or ever saw one live. I always thought that the main problem was finding a smooth sheet of ice big enough. It's rare to find a lake without very bumpy ice, pressure ridges, etc. and the short blade length of an ice skate would make a fall at high speeds likely with some possible unpleasant consequences.

    I did the exact same thing you did, skipped all advices and went for a 85L board while weighing 75kg mainly because of budget and not wanting to buy my way up in a short time- not going to lie about that one.
    did my first session today as a total noob, in 6 knots wind because well... why not. Just wanted to get out on the water and get a feel of the board. Boy did that turn against me 😆😆 drifted off and stranded in the middle of the lake, had to paddle 350m upstream (which was no issue at all with the wing resting on my heels to avoid drag) to avoid the walk of shame across the overcrowded beach.
    Guess I am going to have to wait for a lot more wind lol

  • @NeoVdV

    Suggestion ... video about starting to turn, in taxi mode but powered. Most video, if so, show turning when on your knees or when standing up but stationary turning the board with your feet a d then powering up again. Most jump to turns when already being able to be on foil.
    Also most only show the jibe but when beginner you don't want to loose ground each time when turning.
    Lucky I now manage to go upwind (most of the time) but when I fall and need to get back on the board, find balance, flip over the wing, and by doing so I loose too much ground.

    • @TheOKKiteboarder
      @TheOKKiteboarder  2 роки тому

      Neo, are you saying a video about how to jibe on foil without losing upwind gain, like a pivot turn?

    • @NeoVdV
      @NeoVdV 2 роки тому +1

      No, jabe and Tack when taxi because I'm not on foil yet.
      I did now 8 sessions, of only 4 with good wind, enough but not to strong either, but didn't get on foil a d loosing to much ground with turn or falling and back up.

      Richard, if you don’t mind the struggle of 5-10 sessions and some practice. I think you could get away with a 90L board for longer term satisfaction. But, you will have to pay your dues early.

    Nicely done video! I've been very interested in the wing movement for a year or so. I'm a former windsurfer who got into kiteboarding, but got tired of the hassle of kiting in my area. I was also never comfortable with the long kite lines and the fact that you could get into trouble extremely fast kiting as compared to windsurfing. So, for the past few years, I've been thinking about getting back into windsurfing and then I saw all of the foil trend unfolding. Windsurf foiling and now wingfoiling look like the answer for me. I've been interested in those boards that can be used for windsurf foiling and I'm assuming wingfoiling. Any advice on that? Is it possible for a board to be good for both? Also, I've never foiled. Would it be easier to learn windsurf foiling first, then wingfoiling? New subscriber here and I'm looking forward to watching your other videos to see your progression!

    • @TheOKKiteboarder
      @TheOKKiteboarder  4 роки тому +1

      You’re not going to find a windsurf foil board that will also work for wing foiling. You’ll want a smaller board than that for wing foiling. I would just learn how to get comfortable on a hydrofoil of any kind first. Whether that’s wake foil, cable park, etc. The wing control is actually pretty simple and pretty minimal in gear setup. Windsurf foiling has to be more difficult is my guess.

    I just got into winging. I tried kiteboarding and felt really uncomfortable with the kite attached to me. I know there are safeties and I’m sure I could get it if I practiced but at this time I just didn’t like the feeling of the kite being more powerful than me and also being a danger to bystanders. Plus I need something I can do solo. I only have so many days off and I don’t want to have to rely on other people when I want to get in a session.

    Great instructional videos, so thank you. We are primarily lake wing foiling with 8 to 12 knots, so wondering your thoughts on board volume (190# rider, new to foiling). We are considering a 142L board. We will have a 2,000 cm2 front wing and a Naish 6.0 S25.

      I agree with the hand wing and front wing for those conditions but long term you will not be happy with a board that big imo. Your neutral lb/liters is around 86 Liters. I would get something around 100 L and sacrifice a couple of “difficult” sessions working on balancing on a board that size.
