  • Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow, characterized by the rapid growth of immature lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell). The exact cause of ALL is unknown, but it is believed to result from genetic mutations and environmental factors. Common symptoms include fatigue, fever, frequent infections, easy bruising or bleeding, bone or joint pain, and swollen lymph nodes. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests, bone marrow biopsy, and imaging studies to identify the presence of abnormal lymphocytes. Initial treatment for ALL often includes chemotherapy to destroy cancerous cells, targeted therapy to attack specific cancer cell components, and sometimes radiation therapy. However, in cases where standard treatments are not effective or if there is a high risk of relapse, more intensive treatments, such as a bone marrow transplant, may be recommended.
Haploidentical Bone Marrow Transplantation (Haplo-BMT) is a type of bone marrow transplant where the donor is a partially matched family member, often a parent or sibling. This option is particularly valuable when a fully matched donor is not available. In Haplo-BMT, the patient undergoes a preparative regimen of chemotherapy and possibly radiation to eliminate as many cancer cells as possible and to suppress the immune system to prevent rejection of the donor cells. Bone marrow or stem cells from the haploidentical donor are then infused into the patient's bloodstream. These donor cells migrate to the bone marrow and begin producing healthy blood cells, which can help restore normal blood cell production and fight leukemia. Post-transplant, patients require close monitoring for complications like graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), where the new immune cells attack the patient’s body, and infections due to a weakened immune system. Lifelong follow-up care is crucial to manage any late effects of the transplant and to ensure long-term remission of the leukemia.
