A lot of people ask me how to actually construct their own riffs and licks using the blues scale. The best way to accomplish this in my opinion is just to sit down and play around with the scale until you come up with something. The trick is to start really simple and play what you can hear in your ear, by doing this you will naturally produce more lyrical and melodic lines.
Another great tip worth remembering is when you have a good sounding riff, you can change the where the first beat lays in the bar, and doing so changes all the accents and therefore the whole sound and feel of the riff.
If you have any questions, please just leave a comment and I will get straight back to you :)

great teacher i am 60 and getting better every day
60 is not 90 :) 💪🏽🎶
I'm 67, not getting better, but still having fun! Totally agree about teacher quality. Simon's a great PianoPig!
@@Nour01 And 90 isn't too old to start either.
Simon you are really nice teacher
@@tuttyusbuttyus and 120 isn't too old to start either
Since I've started listening to early 60s and late 50s Rockabilly and Motown. The piano on almost all of that music used blues pianists. Your videos have helped me figure out blues chords and scales in about half an hour.
Thank you for making simple to follow tutorials.
Thanks for the nice comment! It's my pleasure and I'm glad you find my videos helpful :)
Your blues scales video was excellent. They are easy but as with everything, it takes practice to make them second nature. No problem there, it's worth the effort. This video is the icing on the cake.
Really helpful! As a classical piano player I envy your skills and ease to reproduce your insights real-time on the piano. I bet it comes from a good preparation, but also from a great musicality!
Played classic music for 7 years. While it helped me to reach high level of technique and good sight reading. From early stage i enjoyed improvising, on classic scales of course.
Got bored with classic, and wanted to learn something funky, jazzy, blus whatever. And it hit so different. I mean, just replaying the different scales, and trying to match up, makes it such a depth matter to explore. Thanks for the many videos!
Can you make a video on how to match notes to chords ?
@Merc thx
Been playing piano for 7 years and still learned something today, great video. Really informative, thanks :)
That's awesome man! It's nice to know my videos are helping people out :) Appreciate the comment!
Thank you for making this video, it really helps me that you explain slowly and clearly. Happy with my first blues steps! Many thanks, Marian
The way you explain stuff is.....so good. Best UA-cam piano tutor I think. Thanks!
I love your videos they are clear and well explained , thanks a lot!!
You make this look so easy. I've only been playing for 3 months and I know I'll have to climb a lot higher than I am, but watching this really inspires me to keep at it. I love to practice and I do so for 3 to 4 hours per day, so thank you for making these videos, they are very informative.
Thanks! Keep up the practice and you will get there for sure
And you will be a great piano player if you keep practicing piano that much every day years by years... I'll show you on the top one day... Keep doing it....😊😊😊
So did you keep up the practice?
@@devilhunt22 It will be 3 full years in April 2021, and I only skip a day when my pain syndrome is too intense.
@@nbtd1959 Awesome man! this is really inspiring, i am practicing as well :) its always so great to hear when people follow through it inpires me for sure that we are here for long run :)
Big thumbs up! Really well explained and helpful. Creating riffs has always been a big challenge for me. Many thanks.

Hi! Thank you for your great work on this lessons! Can you advise me a literature on music theory with explanation for composing? I want to learn about purpose and use of it. I want to make clear, why we divide and categories notes in scales and etc.
*Awesome!!*
great video!
excellent Thanks
Information appreciated
Much obliged for an insightful lesson on how to simply approach and create riffs. However, it would be very helpful, if you could include ideas as to how to fit them in with rhythm, as this mostly seems to be the main challenging task the majority of pianists have to deal with.
Keep the music light shining and God bless.
Very useful explanation. I liked it. How do you recognise the riff notes by hearing? For example the riff in Dust my broom by Robert Johnson? Thanks
Excelente mil gracias

I love your videos! I struggle with how to know if the chords are in the same key, can someone explain it to me?
Hello sir Simon I'm from pakistan to much far from you you are a genious and awesome perfect teacher your good thing is this that your teaching way is slowly and easily fits in students mind god bless you 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Thanks, Sheraz! Great to hear you've been enjoying the videos 😀
I'm sheraz from pakistan to much inspired from your lessons stay blessed.
Based on that chord progression Dm7 Bb7 F A7, can you put in the blues scale of Fmaj especially when its the time you press Fmaj, or you just have to stick to the root note?
If you don't mind, please show the name of the chords above in the white background.... That will make it complete tutor
you can use a half dim or full dim chord
Great tutorial. Thanks a lot.
My pleasure :)
What are the chords used at the beginning of all your videos. Thanks !
Cm9, Bbm9, Ab13, G7(#5) and then ending on another Cm9. So many people ask me this I think I will have to make a video teaching them soon!
Scale is at 00:38
do u have a tutorial for ur intro song?
Yayyy.
How do I find chords that are in same keyy
Can you explain this chord progression? It sounds great and works so well with the blues scale. So we're in Dminor that means we have i- bVII - bIII - IVdiminished ? Is this Dorian then?
The chords are Dm, Bbmaj7, F, A7alt. So I would notate this as i7 - VImaj7 - iii - V7. Check out my free mini improvisation course, I break this chord progression right down, show you how to play it and also how to improvise over it: bit.ly/FreeImprovCourse
Pig Out on BLUES. Many THX, from a harpoon...
Your lessons are awsome👌👏👏👏👏👏
Superb lesson that opens new doors for me. To transfer this to other scales, I'd like to ask the scale numbers of the chords (as in 2-5-1 etc). So far I have Dm7 (1), BbM7 (don't know), F (2 or is it 3?), and A7b9 (is it 4?). Also I always like to use the note two semis up from the root. In this case that's E. It's not in the D blues scale so how should I refer to this?
That would be: Im7 - VImaj7 - III - V7... (1-6-3-5). The note E in this situation is the 9th. The 9th always gives a very nice warm sound and is great to mix in with the blues/pentatonic scale.
May I ask why you said the Fmaj chord was a Fmaj7 and that the Gdim7 was a A7(b9)? if it was just a mistake, I totally understand.
How are those chords build and could resolve???? Somebody help✋
What i miss from both the blues videos this and the last one is how you actually make the chords,i mean how do you know which chords fit for the scale.I know some basic theory, but it's not that easy to use an A7b9 for a scale is it now?
The way I put interesting chords into a progression is to start off basic. The majority of blues songs are in a minor key, so it's best to start off with a minor scale. Firstly, you need to understand the meaning of a Major key and it's Relative minor. For example, in the chord progression "vi, i, iv, v" in the key of C, all the notes that work are in the A minor/blues scale, since Am is the relative minor of Cmaj. Then you spice up the chords by adding 7s/diminished etc. If you look at the chords he's using, they all come from a typical note in the scale that's been made slightly more complex. You would be playing the song in it's minor key using a blues scale.
Hope this helps.
i’m new to music theory and chords and i was wondering how the A7b9 chord had no A note in it?
It's a rootless voicing!
need to use more in g#
gret techer
Sir can you make a playlist for begginers from beggining to advanced because I didn't know from where to start learning and I don't know which things are more advanced and which are for begginers or you can tell me by reply.. But really appreciate and love you video
I have a 'Beginners' playlist which contains videos aimed at beginners, but there is no structure to it I'm afraid. There is also a playlist called 'Piano Chords for Beginners' which does have a structure and you can work through. If you want to see some courses which you can work your way through right from beginner to advanced with a load of other material, then check out the PianoPig Academy: bit.ly/PianoPigAcademy
Thank u Sir
the day I changed instrument, didn’t bother learning with the notes & all, free just with ear … that’s the day I started to learn how to improvise
Hi, can you do a video on how to play those super lighting fast Jazz runs you see those up and coming jazzers like Justin lee Shultz, Jesus Molina, Etc I play some jazz, but I would like to branch off and play more freely like those guys do, I keep recycling stuff from books.
Those guys have been playing straight jazz for years and that's where you need to start. Those fast runs are awesome, but that's all they are - fast! If you slow them down they are just classic lines you would find in jazz at a normal tempo but they're just going for it! You can't learn how to play them fast, you need to learn them slowly, incorporate them into your playing and over many years you can develop the technique to play them at those high speeds. Hope that helps :)
@@Piano_Pig Do you know of any books that I can get to learn those licks? Cheers.
where did he get that Ab7b9 from?????
G is the dominante seventh
The root aka A MOVES TO Bb
Now Theres a Db but i can ALSO be called C# and a E
omitted A C# E G Bb b9
If you are playing on key C the blues scale will be
Is that really a Amaj7(b9) or a Gdim7
Not an Amaj7(b9), an A7(b9)... 2 different chords! And yes it is, it's just a rootless voicing. Just imagine an A being played on the bottom, or by a bass player.
I get it... But since I saw it like that I realized that G diminished 7th is a rootless voicing for A7(b9). And I applied it to my playing... I know it's not exactly the same but it's easier to think of it this way
Are those chords inverted?
yes
First one sounded like the flash
This what i search
May I suggest a Patreon channel to monetize this great content!
Thanks for the suggestion! I have thought about it before, but I would much rather people supported me by signing up to the PianoPig Academy - that way all the supporters get a whole lot of great content in return :)
I see you are playing an F instead of F Major 7.. i am confused. Pls clarify
How many fucking Simply Guitar adds am I going to see

Wich blues scale is this? Pls i need it

It's not a D blues scale, it's a D MINOR blues scale

This dude sounds like KSI's alter ego
L'accent de la mort
you sound like someone stuck a long pole somewhere................I do like your videos though
keep it up
Every time I try to play on the d blues scale I end up playing megalovania
You insult me
I don't think I want to "lick" my piano
Then you can ligma
I felt like I was just watching you play not getting a lot of instruction. I missed the first riff you talk too much. You show the riffs for less than a second it seems. Too short to gasp for me. . Try passing the video when riff notes are showing. The viewer can't. It is always before or after what needs seeing. You probably had something good to show. For me it didn't come across.
This video was more about showing you how to create your own licks rather than teaching you the licks I was playing, that's why I rushed throuigh them. But thanks for the constructive critism 😀
Why you say hi guys? ???? Im women
Hello mate... I've saw this video before...but now theres adverts in the middle of the class ...my internet is shit and keep loading... and its VERY annoying... I love your channel...but if all your videos start like that I will eventually leave your channel
I make all these videos and post them for free dude, gotta make a living somehow!
@@Piano_Pig understandable ... but don't let it get over... I'm sure you're doing well with your website too, but you're pushing it too much here... try to do not changing your core values from the beginning of this channel!!
