No problem! Yeah it's a handy little trick to remember 😀
I don't play piano but that is probably the best explanation I have heard
i literally play drums ...
Masterful explanation of the differences between the major and minor blues scales! Thank You, Simon!
It's my pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it 😀
This helps explain the relative major and minor keys. It is helpful to be able to understand the difference in order to understand the feel you’re targettong
Great video! It's crazy that starting on a different note can make such a big difference.
Thank you for your comparison between major blues scale and minor blues scale. Very clear and to the point. Everywhere I looked people were just beating about the bush
this was uploaded on my birthday ! The visuals explained so much and now today I'm going to incorporate this into my saxophone practice. As well just messing around.
No way - 22nd november is my birthday as well :)
thanks so much man! your videos help me a lot more than the internet articles, keep up the good work!
This was so helpful to help understand by first stating the “bare nessecities” notes of the PENTATONIC SCALES!!
That's a good tip about playing the relative minor blues scale over the top of the major scale as it is a lot easier to remember just the one scale especially while improvising.
Yeah it's a handy little trick to remember! 😀
Clearest explanation I could find anywhere. The major to relative minor equivalence insight is very helpful. Thank you,
No problem! Glad you enjoyed it 😀

Hey man you gotta add the 2 and the (flat) seventh for the full blues scale. This video just teaches mixing major and minor pentatonic. Which is a good first step
1 2 flat3 3 4 5 6 flat 7 is major
1 2 3 4 flat5 5 6 7 is minor
Good teaching skills brother. God bless you

This video is gonna be so useful for me - I'm learning a piece from the ABRSM Jazz Piano Pieces Grade 1 book and there are 12 bars left open for soloing, I'll be using what I've learned here to construct my solo :) Thanks a lot Simon, especially for that tip on the relative minor scale!
No worries! Good luck in your exam 😀

You're welcome!
So helpful👍👍
I really liked where you explained the formula of the blues scale in one of your videos. The 3 2 1 1 3 2 . I wish you could have used this technique in this video as well for the major scale. Thanks!
unrelated but i see ur pfp and be sad
2 1 1 3 2 3 would be the major blues scale formula. And you see how that is shifted (rotated) one note, 3 steps (a minor third), upwards from the minor blues scale formula. Parallel keys!
_ 2 1 1 3 2 3
3 2 1 1 3 2 _
Thanks man!
Such a great video. Wish you covered all 12 keys major and minor

Hi there. If you play c minor blues over a c chord, when you move up to the Four chord do you move the scale up to f or carry on playing the c minor scale over both chords? Thanks
Thank you so much. I finally got it after 30 yeaars.
Mind blown!
Thanks
Thanks lessons
Thanks for guide.
You're welcome!
perfect
Can you use the 4 3 rule for the major chords in the blues scale?
Interesting 👍
Thx, bro

Welcome to the channel man! Glad you enjoyed the video 😀
Great
I'm using those scale in my playing but never know what it is called haha.. thanks simon ❤️
Question: if you're using as comping major chords from the 12-bar blues pattern and the minor blues you're improvising on top clashes with the major thirds in the chords, then shouldn't you have to make the chords minor, instead?
Thank you!
I don't understand what you mean about soloing relative minor's blues scale over the major scale.
For example. Im analyzing a song that's in Fmajor and when I look at the D minor blues scale, it contains 'Ab' which is not part of the F major scale.
Or is that what makes it bluesy?
I don't know why this song I'm analyzing sounds bluesy to me. Maybe bluesy is the wrong descriptor...
In case you have the time and want to reference, the song is 'While the fire was out' by Brighten.
It's just in F major, but it has this quality when the singer is vocalizing over the IV chord and also when resolving back down to the the I that gives it what I 'might be incorrectly' describing as 'bluesy'.
Thanks for the video
Can u plz explain how to apply blues scale chords
HI! When I play the minor pent scale in C, the 7th should be flat, otherwise it sounds a bit weird. Is that right or am I doing it wrong? Thanks a lot, greetings from Argentina
Thanks for your video. So to sum it up, Major Blues scale is based on Major Pentatonic(add b3) while Minor Blues scale is based on Minor Pentatonic(add b5)?
Exactly!
It would have been easier to understand and remember in C but that said theoretically speaking you're videos are always strong and helpful. Thank you.
I avoid teaching everything in the same key as I like to encourage people to practice in various different keys evenly and not just stick to one key the whole time.
helpfull
Wow♥️👏🏼
Tu es le plus fort
Smashed
@1:30 why are you deriving the G minor pentatonic scale from the G major scale? why not derive for the G min scale??
I did know. What I know about the blues are that they can never decide if they're happy or sad, major or minor, and that is why there are so many dominant seventh chords, and they work...because the blues never resolves.
Bro you look so cool ! Why didn't you show your face in previous videos! Great work with the video too. 🔥⚡
Shouldn't the minor pentatonic last note be flattened 7?If you saying its F then G major only "7th" is F# which isnt the case.It should be Flat 7th .Right?Correct me if I am wrong
@2:30 moment of enlightenment. The blues scale!
Is it based off the G major scale?
Great lesson .But you said the minor pentatonic is 1,b3,4,5,7 instead of b7 note.
Thank you
Are there even more useful 'modes' of the blues scale, other than major and minor? Say, starting on D instead of starting on E or G? Sorry if that's a dumb question - I'm really new (but growingly addicted) to music/blues theory...
There aren't really modes of the blues scale to be honest! It would have no use :)
So is the main rhythm of boogie Woogie basically an arpegio of the major pentatonic scale?
What chords can I play the major blues over?
Any diatonic progression
Bro can you do a tutorial of rap chords
I understood the theory but i think am far from playing well since am a beginner
Tnx so much btw i learn a really sth.
Wow....
can you explain this in on fl studio
Vs Moody Blues (And leone abacchio)
Wow oh wow.. No I do not no this.. So cool.. Been playing minor blues for 25 years..
Ok, so it has no dominant 7th in it -- then why are dominant 7th chords used for blues pattern??
Blues note in Minor Pentatonic Scale is the lat-3rd note,
Minor Pentatonic scale add the blues note so call Mnor Blues Scale.
Blues note in Major Pentatonic Scale is the flat-5th note,
Major Pentatonic scale add the blues note so call Major Blues Scale.
The major pentatonic scale is exactly same as raag bhupali if indian music. And the minor blues scale is similar to raag bhimplasi of indian music. Music is universal! ❤️
Sir, Minor pentatonic scale is equivalent to Raag Suddha Danyasi (Carnatic),Dhani (Hindustani). Not Bhimpalasi.
@@veeraraghavuluarigela9022 i am talking about minor blues scale, not minor pentatonic
Sir, We add Tivra M to Raag Dhani is formed Minor pentatonic Blue. So Minor pentatonic scale is not equivalent to Dhani and Bheempalasi because of Both Raags doesn't have Tivra M.It is only Western music Scale.
Thanks so much! A light bulb just went on :-)
1:32 it's flat 7. Still awesome video!
G major scale's 7th note is F#, so i guess you mean F is the flat 7th for minor scale?
Yup!
Minor are more delicated and sad. Mayor: much more happy...
