Backing Track: • Simple & Funky Backing...
This is a great chord progression for you to learn and practice improvisation. It consists of four chords in the key of A minor and has a slight jazz feel.
I take you through some ideas for what scales you could use to solo with which include the blues scale, and also the dorian scale. I show some ideas using both these scales.
There is also a backing track made exclusively for this video which consists of a band, with no piano, playing through these exact chords. Go and check it out and have a go improvising over it! The link is at the top of the description.
If you have any question just leave them in the comment box below and I will get straight back to you.

Probably the most comprehensive series of piano lessons on youtube. No nonsense, visually digestible and perfectly timed. This should be the standard for all videos like this. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks man! I appreciate the kind words 🙏
Wish you every success.
Thanks! 🙏
nowhere near your speed of improvising, but thank you so much I literally found myself having such a fun and expressive moment just jamming out and next thing i knew half an hour flew by.
That's what it's all about! Using music to get into that flow state - makes me happy to hear 😀
@@Piano_Pig D9 shouldnt be there on blues scale chord? A m blues notes havent f# for D. Can anyone explain me please? Im beginner..
I used this today with a nice hiphop beat and I loved it. Thank you so mutch. You are awesome!!!!!

Did you guys think that musical Concepts will change that much in 3 years
barfbag5000 it seems plausible for them to assume that
Wow really thought this chord progression was outdated in 3 years thanks for keeping us updated. You are a hero man.
Basically crave you by flight facilities, really like that song.

This chord progression sound like Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely" progression. Great job, thank you, sir.
Came in not expecting much. Left with my jaw on the floor and a groove in my step. Subbed!
Same here!
Dude, really enjoy your piano lessons. I've decided to spruce up my piano (guitar is my main instrument). While there's some good lessons on UA-cam, yours really stand out, because they're really interesting and digestible - enough to bite off and practice in each lesson. Great teaching and thank you!
Thanks man really appreciate it! It's the comments like this that give me motivation to keep making more! Glad you're finding them useful! :)
same here...guitar player learning piano via UA-cam. piano pig is tops.
Yeah gotta say I agree. I love your teachings mate. Oh great swine of wisdom

The A minor 7th chord progression in the beginning pairs nicely with the blues scale’s melody, I learned that scale in band class and I didn’t realize the importance of learning proper chord progressions until recently, I paired it with the blues scales and it’s an easy way to improvise some songs. Great video I learned a lot I practice with this video and refer to this video when I have to remember the finger placements
Because of you, I understand how chord progression works. Now I can make a lot of beats!
3:40- this is just for myself
love this progression I have had so much fun using the backing track on my roland piano, more like this please.
thanks so much for this! I’ve been a classical pianist for nearly a decade now but recently Ive really gotten in the mood for learning jazz, and this was really fun to improvise with! Idk how far youtube videos are gonna get me but it’s a nice start.
Thank you for being one of the few channels to play more than talk!
I can watch PianoPig videos all day and not bother to touch the keys. Thanks Simon.
Haha I'm not sure that's the goal but I'm glad you're enjoying the channel 🤣🙏
I'm gonna echo what so many have already said: THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! Because of this video, I'm able to finally put all of the Jazz theory I've been learning into practice! I have so much more freedom on the piano now, because I finally know a little of what I'm doing! Once again, thank you! Keep doing what you're doing!
It's my pleasure bro! So happy you found this lesson useful - keep it up 😀
love dropping the bass note like that. sounds great and is so easy to play :) thank you!
Wow your videos are really good thank you so much for your time, they're full of knowledge and very understandable way of teaching. I'm applying some of those lesson to play the bass as well thank you so much. Moises from Burlington North Carolina USA.
This video means so much. My jazz teacher recently just passed away and the last thing he taught me was the dorian scale. He never got to teach me on how to improvise with it, but after seeing your video, i feel like i’m starting to understand. Thankyou 🙋🏻♀️
My word that sounds heavenly, you are really good at this!!!!!!!!!
I love this channel to easily sound better at piano although my main instrument is trumpet i use some riffs and patterns for my improv in others like trumpet, sax, guitar, and sometimes bass
Hell nah its 2023 and this thing hits hard. Mans the piano GOAT
Oh, Simon! You have helped me soooo much with this video! I have been trying to improve my solo improvisation in A minor for the last two (2) years. Thank You!
Awesome! Good to know I've helped you improve, that's what it's all about :)
I really appreciate you playing in the end! It gave me some ideas for some tricks :)
Your lessons are so inspiring . Thank you Simon ! Looking forward to being a member soon. Learned much already, mostly: that I can perhaps do this !!! Big Thank you ...
Pretty Awesome! I like this style of chords, but not get used to play. This video is so useful for me to go into blues style.
Not sure if they are ghost notes, but that A Dorian riff right before 4:40 has some amazing fill and that E you hit harmonizes so well.
Piano Pig is my new hero - incredible playing.
OMG so beautifully u have played. I enjoyed lot nd also tried to grasp the right hand finger tricks. But Left hand chord we can play. But playing with Right hand notes along with left hand really tough nd tough. So much of ur time nd put all ur efforts to learn this. Hats off to u sir. Let us try to learn slowly.
Thanks, loved this one

Love this.

Love this lesson, thank you for posting.
No worries!
Great content. I have been playing for 40 plus years and on Christmas eve I lost my left index finger due to infection. It was and still is quite a blow. I am relearning slowly but surely. This channel gives me great finger exercises to practice. Thank you so much
I feel obligated to extend my gratitude to you for all these videos for free.
I am 24, have always wanted to play the piano, and just purchased my first keyboard. I've been practicing every day because I really do love it, and I want to develop this skill as much as possible.
I made a youtube playlist for piano vids, and it almost entirely consists of your videos.
I love your videos, as they're both informative and easy to digest. My best wishes to you on your career, and thanks a bunch!
Thanks friend, that means a lot. Happy to hear you're enjoying the videos and finding them useful 🙏
If more Piano teachers were like this, there would be less Guitar Players in the World, too many already!
wwowwww. If I had found this video 2 years ago id be such better shape. you're the man dude!
What a great, convinient, simple and interesting way of teaching you use .. I blindly subscribed and I'll be so dedicated to your tutorials .. so keep it up dude 👌
Thank! So glad you're a fan of the channel :)
Great lesson
First time on the channel. My impression after first chords: can this guy even play piano? My impression after hearing the blues improvisation : holy shit! I want to one day be as capable as he.
perhaps play the last part first as well as the ending to give people the finished product so they get it!!.....then they will try...this is only meant to help...you are a fantastic instructor!!
Sounds good man.
Thank you for your great vids. Much appreciated. Going through this I see it can be played slow and cocktail style, it appears. My sense of rhythm is not so hot so I like the slower pace.
It's just a chord progression - it can be played in whatever style and whatever speed you fancy 😀
Thank you for such a nice tutorial
It's my pleasure! 😀
Dude you are THE BEST INSTRUCTOR out there. Keep it up. I am a fan, a student and most of all a SUBSCRIBER!!!

There could be just a whole video for lots of awesome chord progressions like this and right hand scales that goes with them.. This is great
Glad you like it!
Those are nice chord changes
