    Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Great video Ron! Thanks for bringing us along. Some of my fondest memories are of hunting pheasant over my Weirmararner, Chomp in the corn and alfalfa fields of Lancaster County, PA. There is nothing quite so satisfying as seeing your dog work well and the taste of fresh meat! And yes!! We ate the morning's harvest for supper!

The terrain is a bit different, but up here I love going grouse hunting in Manitoba and North Western Ontario each year. It's peaceful and relaxing, and even if you don't get a bird, you still got some fresh air, exercise, and let go of the stress.
And when you do spot a bird and stalk it for the perfect shot, that's just the cherry on top.

I think that is my same exact gun, Ron! I chose it because it is half a pound lighter than the 12 ga. That's a lot when hiking all day. And everyone knows the 16 kills as well as the 12! Covey is going to need a bath after that sojourn. Thanks, Ron!

Love my great-grandfather's old-old Winchester Model 12 in 16 gauge for birds. Full choke is great for pheasants, but for your hunt, modified or more open would be great. The 16 hits perfectly hard for big birds.

I remember hunting turkeys in n. Arizona with my dad when I was 12. My dad spotted 2 turkeys behind a log with just their heads showing. My dad let me shoot first with my single shot 12ga. Direct hit on one and a single pellet through the head of the second. My dad hurried to put them in the game bag and said we were done hunting. Dad cleaned them in the trailer with the door closed. Cooked them in the fire after dark and then I found out how much I loved the taste of grouse.

My model 42 was about perfect but lacking a bit in our heavy brush. I settled on the Model 12 in 16ga and had a special stock made for it. It turned into my upland gun. Lightweight and plenty of punch! The 16 never became popular in the west but after hunting with one I don't know why?

Living in north central British Columbia, the Ruffed Grouse is the most common grouse we see. On occasion a Spruce Grouse is added to the bag. A favourite way to cook them at my place is to cut the meat into bite sized cubes and do them up in good old Shake 'N Bake. The kids call it "grouse nuggets".
Maybe it's the lower population (thus lower hunting pressure) around here compared to most places in the US, along with the vast areas of forest but I can safely say that a day's grouse hunting will usually lead to a full daily limit of ten birds. Back when all five kids still lived at home, that was simply putting food on the table. Now that all five are on their own, a few hours out in the afternoon will provide three or four, just right for the wife and myself. Two for dinner that night and leftovers in the fridge for a tasty, memorable snack the next day.

Love the mountains. Just wish the environmental cult earth worshipers would understand that forest service needs to get in and clean up all the downed timber for fire reasons. Returning to wood-burning for household heat and ash application on private gardens would bring a lot of health back to the population.

Ryan, I've had some incredible quail hunts around Oracle, Sonoita, etc. Let me know when the populations are high. I've got to get back down there.

16 ga is a great upland game caliber. I love the dedicated 2 3/4" chamberings which make for amazing slick pump action. Sadly when 3" offerings for 12 and 20 gauge hit the market dedicated 2 3/4" actions as factory new guns disappeared. Nothing wrong with shooting it out of a side by side or over under either.

I was never lucky enough to hunt grouse in the west. Hunting grouse in Pennsylvania and north to New Brunswick is similar with exception of being done at lower altitudes. In some areas you had a mix of Pheasants, Woodcock and Quail. In other areas you might find Ruff Grouse and Woodcock. However; hunting Grouse meant Grouse in mountain woods and Ringnecks in rolling farm lands. West Virginia and Ohio had good hunting too. A good day hunting for Grouse was counting the flushes. There were fewer shots and Grouse taken than bird’s flushes. Getting a pair of Grouse or limit was a rare occasion for time spent. I figured on walking ten miles for every Grouse I put in my game bag as doing pretty good. Best thing about hunting Grouse is seldom seeing anyone else most days. It doesn’t get any better hunting Grouse alone with just the company of your Dog. As Grouse guns go; I like short barrels and light weight guns; and having a sling on one is even better. I shot two doubles on Grouse in my life; both times using a 20ga. So that is the best gun for me. My second choice is a 28ga. If you are a hardcore Grouse hunter we all have one thing in common. Sitting down for a break sharing your lunch with your dog. Then having a Grouse flushing giving you the best shot of the day with a cup of coffee in your hand. You had pretty good day in your video. I suggest leaving that Yuppie smoothie machine home and eat man food. ✨👏✨🍺🍜

What?! No more fruit smoothies! Well, I need to give up milk anyway, so my wife might inherit this machine. Maybe she'll concoct some nice milkless fruit smoothies. Maybe I can find recipe for Pina Colada with ice cream!

I found my first big boomer spruce grouse hunting moose the year before last, my dad and I have a 20 gauge "beater" Pointer over under I took for a walk next to the border of a wildlife corridor we'd seen a big bull dissappear into the day before, hoping to call him out. I saw several ruffs and spruce, so the next day I took the shotgun along, and as I didn't have my lab I still hunted across deep moss and the soggy floor of a pine forest in a swampy bottom. Ended up ground swatting a big old cock bird and then tagging one of his two hens, promptly plucked and turned them into camp fare. Good days. I find lots of them in those edges of where swamps, bogs, and creek bottoms meet older pine woods.

I'm one of those folks that doesn't like to eat grouse the same day I've shot it. The meat tastes delicious, but it tastes just like it smells when you're dressing the carcass (if that makes sense), and my brain doesn't let me enjoy it because of that. Otherwise, looks like a fun hunt! I've got an English Setter named Duke and an old Stevens 311A SxS in 16 that I hunt ruffed grouse here in northern Utah, so your hunt looks a lot like my own. Hopefully heading up this weekend! Good luck next week!

Good luck Jiggy. We've got our fingers crossed for spruce grouse, but then moving into chukar country for that opener. To circumvent any bad odors while cleaning your birds, filet the meat off without opening the body cavity. Breast, legs, wings and some along the back. Slick.
