I have said for a long time that if I had to describe '80's music with one song, I would play "I'll Melt With You". I'm one of the lucky ones whose entire high school and college years were in the '80's decade. I experienced it all at the perfect age. This is one of the songs that defined my adolescent years back in the 80's when I was 14. This song was so huge here in the Philippines.
I was so happy when I found an original used Sire maxi-single vinyl in a thrift shop four years later in a box of old records.
Bought it for just a dollar in our local currency and became one of my most cherished record in my collection 'til this day and it never fails to brings me back to my teenage years whenever I listen to it.

It’s fascinating to discover how much the UK, Australia, and the US, had in common during this era which I remember well. The vast majority of your presentations cover material which is very familiar to me, and it resonates strongly, but this track doesn’t seem to be one that made it to Australia. Most British hits of that time were also successful in Australia, and certainly the vast majority of songs that were big in both the UK _and_ the US found at least some success in Australia too. Weird, yet intriguing. Thank you for this ongoing education.
P.S. Unfortunately, due to the differences in time zones, this video was uploaded around midnight in Australia. This means that our delayed responses are unlikely to catch the Professor’s eye.

This song is one of the best things ever to come out of the 80s. In fact, I ended up loving it even more when it was used in an episode of Stranger Things (the pool party scene at Steve’s house in “The Weirdo On Maple Street”). I never knew it was a song about nuclear war until a few months ago, actually! Makes it even more fascinating to listen to.
Another 80s classic about nuclear war that you should cover is “1999” by Prince, in which he says that we better party like it’s 1999 because we might never see 2000 if a nuclear event happens! And while you’re at it, I would love to see you do a feature on Kate Bush. She’s an amazing singer and so many of her songs are underrated. I’m mentioning this because her catchy song “Running Up That Hill” was recently used in Stranger Things as well!

This song takes me back. I was just a kid, but I was paying attention! I didn't really understand the meaning, back then, but I loved the rhythm, melody and chorus. It's cemented in my brain (with all of the other 80's hits) and always takes me back to good times.

One of my favourite songs of all time, along with Dancing with tears in my eyes and Red Skies. Funny you have all three in one video. I can not count how many times I have listened to this song. I do think the humming is better than what whistling would have sounded like.

After all this talk of end-of-the-world anthems, it occurs to me that "The Walls Came Down" by The Call deserves some attention. Unlike "Melt With You", there was nothing ironically cheerful about it, but it was still a work of art. It would also be interesting to know what happened to the members of The Call, whoever they were.

It brings me back to the beginning of MTV: One Step Beyond & Our House (Madness), Living In A Ghost Town (The Specials), See You On The Other Side (Brian Briggs), Praying To The Aliens & Cars (Gary Newman), and so many more! The 80s (1980-1988) were my fast times. I'm 60, now. When younger people say, "I wish I was born and grew up in that era.", I can say, "I did! I was there!"

Modern English played on my campus (University of Maryland, College Park) I think either in the fall of 83 or the spring of 84. I was a DJ at our campus radio station at the time and the band came by the station on the day of the show to promote it. I had a total crush on Robbie Gray and I fan-girled all over him at the time. I have photos of me with the band from that afternoon. I was in the front row of the concert that night and got to go backstage for a bit. It was a total blast. “I Melt With You” is one of my most favorite songs to this day.

Wow. I had no idea this was a Cold War song. Now that makes sense.
New Wave Cold War songs were scary but comforting at the same time. It indeed felt better to dance the fear away. "Two Tribes" mix always gave me the chills with it's narration of a nuclear war protocol. "If your grandmother or any other member of your family should die whilst in the shelter, put them outside, but remember to tag them first for identification purposes".

The perfect new wave/post punk song. Great lighting in a bottle song that beat.
He wrote it in 10 minutes and the song has lasted 50 years and still sounds fresh. Cool how they didn't know how to make a song that wasn't punk and it came out like poetry and beautiful. Great interview professor had no idea the background on this song. Robbie is so open and honest with the truth of it all, fantastic guy

Two one-hit wonder songs that I really liked from that time period include "Der Kommissar" by After The Fire and "She Blinded Me With Science" by Thomas Dolby. Another one that sticks in my mind is "Mickey" by Toni Basil.

I really enjoyed the brilliance of Thomas Dolby. I live in a suitcase was my favourite, and I love you goodbye and silk pajamas was fun. That whole album, astronauts and heretics was great to listen too. Close but no cigar, beauty of a dream, that’s why,….people fall in love, and cruel, and eastern bloc. Very innovative and impressive for its time and still to this day… yes, blinded me with science is iconic for the time, and is still very interesting and entertaining to listen to.

If you could also do a video about the Valley Girl soundtrack and all the awesome songs, that would be epic. I keener the soundtrack didn’t exist for a long time and my fired and I searched high and low for it. Valley Girl was our favorite movie, being girls from Southern California. We loved Nic Cage as well and had to have the music. It took years if I remember correctly for the album to come out and I’d LOVE to hear about that process… as well as info on The Plimsouls and their songs. Josie Cotton (Johnny are you Queer and School Is In from Valley Girl) still performs at 80’s live concerts.. in fact I’m seeing her again this August. So much fun how all these great 80’s bands are experiencing a resurgence in popularity and the concerts are just so much fun.

You mentioned other bottled lightning songs we would like to hear and I would put in a vote for Dwight Twilley "Girls". I have the cassette but for some reason it was never put out on cd. It was just a fun song that we played over and over during football season (probably because of the video) one year in high school. Coach would have killed us if we played it in the locker room because that was for serious contemplation of practice or the game only, but we sure blasted it in the parking lot.

A great song that crosses personal genre bias of people. Anytime it’s played, everyone seems to remember and like it. I wonder if they took any inspiration from The Vapors Album “New Clear Days”, and the song “60 Second Interval”.
The aforementioned song delved deeply into the mindset of people during a nuclear strike where bombs were inbound every 60 seconds. A very intense song.
