If you're genuinly worried about someone defaming you, recording the conversation and or keeping chat logs is definetly a good idea.
I recently confronted a long time friend of mine about their behaviour towards me and that I wanted to cut ties with them. I was genuinly afraid that they might spread misinformation about me, so I recorded the conversation for my safety.
Thankfully nothing has really happened and I dont plan on keeping the recording anyway
I still recommend you to keep it honestly, they might try to talk behind your back or trying to defame you later since they might hold a grude, some people may become just extremely petty after some time
Wish the best moving forward with what happen to you. My bro in same situation.
It's been long time after this incident. Luckily it went smooth and he learn not to get close people like that ever again.

I've been through a couple of abusive relationships in the past that made me getting some safety nets like these to calm my mind when I start feeling anxious around someone or feel like I'm being manipulated. I keep copies of my chatlogs and some conversations in a private folder for protection, just in case I need to refreshen my memory or someone tries to twist something to make me the villain.
Once you go through something traumatic like treason from a loved one, you understand the urge to record key conversations.

Some parents believe they’re doing the right thing but are just messing up their kids. Some change for their kids *for the better.* We don’t know, but we can go day by day and just try - that goes for both kids and parents.

As someone that was dealing with an abusive partner in the past, it's the kind of thing I do to protect myself once I start sensing something's fishy. But it always stay hidden to protect myself in case something happens, no need to share that stuff for everyone to see. For love? For money? For a boost in your reputation? Would you feel comfortable if your child dated someone like you the way you are now?
At the end of the day, be respectful, expect rejection and move on, and stay humble
