Thankfully we've been getting the normal afternoon thunderstorms so far this summer, here in Nokomis. Last summer was brutal. Hot and no rain, but unless I'm misremembering, it was still humid. So basically the worst of all worlds, haha
Hi Sulcata grove, it looks like a rest year for many trees; I thought I might have a few first time fruit on a couple varieties, but they dropped off a while ago. oh well, another full year of the trees putting on size hopefully results in a decent crop next year. That ice cream is incredible, one of the best. Enjoy!
Our best crop came after the rest year most of our trees had after the freeze of ‘22. Hopefully we have a great crop next year. I have been tipping a few of the trees and focusing on nutrition.
I’ve lived in Florida for most of my life and the last two years have been the driest I’ve ever seen. It’s getting ridiculous. Normally around this time of the year it would be raining every day and you could barely go outside for months because it would be raining constantly. I do not remember ever being in late May going into June without a single drop of rain.
Thanks for the update! My area in Tampa Bay hasn’t received rain since February as well. Can you ripen mangoes that fell off, on the counter, at this stage of development? It’s sad to see them drop. Thanks!
You may be able to pickle or use early drop mangos in another way, but I have never had one that ripened to the proper texture and flavor when not mature.
Truly. We need rain, but at this point, rain may split the mangos that are on the tree. Trying to keep those with fruit watered a bit in case it rains as they are almost ripe.
I'm up in Weeki Wachee but I'm looking to move to a 10a-b zone. Looking at both east and west coast. Where are you located? I'll be visiting friends in Sarasota soon and I'm definitely interested in looking at properties in the area where I can create another food forest. Appreciate any info 😊
I haven’t. My goal is to get the most fruit I can each year. With hurricanes, unusual freezes, and more weather events, I don’t think that kind of planning would work in our favor.
I'm in the Ft Pierce/Vero area and my tree's even with a second bloom got decimated by Powdery Mildew this year. I was spraying Sulfur and it did not help this year.
I don’t think it tastes like ice cream, but it is delicious. Here is a link to a tasting video we did last year. ua-cam.com/video/hUq0COMxZqU/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Great video. Thanks for the yard tour.

Thanks for the tour & the candor ! Love the video

Awesome farm tour. Sulcata Grove is an inspiration for my fledgling backyard orchard just south in port Charlotte.
Thank you! Hopefully, we will both get some rain soon so small trees can put on some good growth this summer.

I feel the same way. I remember in the 90s when you could almost set your watch by the daily afternoon rain in summer.
Sure is dry on north Florida too. Grass is crunchy! Been here 41 years
And California has been getting so much more rain. Guess their roles are reversing.
The problem is Geoengeneering . Look it up, is a real thing.

hey are you guys near the coast? I’m inland a bit, and seems many varieties don’t do well away from the coast without spraying chemicals
@@ToddPalms we are 2-3 miles from the bay.
This season has been brutal huh?

@@chek67 close to the coast allows for more airflow, less disease. We are in north Sarasota, 2-3 miles from the coast.
@@SulcataGrove wow looks like a fair bit of property. I will have to drive around and see what's available
Have you tried thinning the fruit to reduce alternate year bearing, or does that not work with some varieties?
I haven’t. My goal is to get the most fruit I can each year. With hurricanes, unusual freezes, and more weather events, I don’t think that kind of planning would work in our favor.
@@SulcataGrove That makes sense. There are probably some trees on alternate cycles, so it wouldn't be worth the work.
@@winesap2 It may be something worth exploring in areas without major weather events.
Wow! how did you get an oderata? ive always wanted to attempt an indics x oderata hybrid variety
A friend shared a scion with me years ago. It’s grafted onto indica. I have grafted trees available.
I have an ice cream mango tree but have not grown at all, how do you treat them ?
Mulch heavily. All of our trees are mulched with around 8-12” of mulch when starting out.

That stinks. Hopefully next year is a better year for us both.
if you dont mind
what exactly makes the
Ice Cream mango taste like ice cream
does it taste like dairy?
does it taste like vanilla
thanks

Hopefully Florida will follow Tennessee and outlaw stratospheric aerosol injections blocking our rain.
Cogshall is the worst! Tastes like barf! The fact that you guys agree is why i trust your pallets lol
😂 maybe it has a small window of good flavor if picked just right. I like my mangos less fussy - delicious ripe and slightly under or over ripe.
How are the other mangifera trees?
They seem to be doing well. Only the grafted Mangifera odorata is fruiting this year.
