If anyone wants a good yellow, I really, really recommend Army Painter's speedpaint Zealot Yellow. Despite being a speed paint, it creates a much richer and solid yellow than a lot of more traditional yellow paints. It just looks really good, and can be touched up with other yellows on top to bring up the level of brightness even more. I will try a pink base for my Wraith army though, I intend them to be yellow and orange.

Surprisingly, you can do a lot of things using contrasting colors; you can use something like a purple/violet ink to add shading to yellow and it gives a lot of depth, and you can do the same using red and green. Mixing contrasting colors usually gets you a rich brown which you can tint depending on which of the colors you add more. I saw a similar trick with magenta and yellow on the channel RobPaintsModels where he painted up the Orruk warband for Shadespire in that vibrant yellow color scheme and its *always* impressive to watch it happen.

It makes sense because when you want to shade yellow, you want to move more towards orange as adding black pigment tends to make things turn more of a snotty green. So, adding red makes yellow in to orange, and pink makes the transition less of a jump in hue. Warm hues in general tend to turn muddy with black, so moving towards another adjacent color in hue for your shades looks better. Its a method I learned for digital coloring that, in most ways can work well with pigment. Rarely do you see instances of using a directly darker or lighter shade of the base color in painting guides.

@@GoobertownHobbies Probably. Not enough population up here to move this sort of stuff regular. I have gotten into the habit of ordering every thing online from big US companies. Noble Night Games or Michigan Toy Soldier Co. are very good outfits with more than a decade behind them and both have expanded recently. Big inventory and flawless service from my experience.

If you're looking for something that won't chunk like titanium white ink, I've had really really good success with molotow one4all signal white. Guess through the airbrush beautifully and doesn't descend into chunks like the liquitex titanium white ink.

I've seen brown and green combine in interesting ways, like dark green recesses that happened when I painted brown over green, or Agrax Earthshade washed over olive green.

I always spray a patch of colour onto a primed board, before i change colours in my airbrush. Eventually have a great sample board of colours. It's always nearby when i'm painting, and before i change a colour, i then add a dot of what is in the airbrush, onto every different colour patch. Eventually there's examples of how all colours look applied over all other colours.

Daaaamn I found this video by accident but this is sick! I barely know stuff about WH, but I've seen what the average model looks like and basically, yours look like professional work.

That is really good...I have never used an airbrush before but I brush paint with thin layers. I knew about the pink underpainting for yellow through colour theory work I did years ago ( I also underpaint green for 'basic' flesh tones)..
Maybe it's time for an airbrush!

My guess would be that for most colors that one would use as the main color of an army if you use one primary/secondary step level of color over it should work.
Example: if main color is Red, but I want cool to cold shadowing, using a Blue color as the under coating in the shadows should give a nice cool to cold shading of the shadows. Using a Purple should make slightly warmer, but still cool feeling.
Inversely using a pretty to very dark Orange or Yellow as the under coating of the shadow areas should result in a warmer feeling shadowing red.
