    The director actually said that he's pretty sure Riggan killed himself at the end of the movie, and his daughter looking up in wonder is her refusing to acknowledge it and instead she starts hallucinating like he did. If you really crank up the volume on the end scene you can hear sirens and people shouting from below, as if someone had just jumped out of a window.

      Actually she's looking at the end of the world. Look at the reflection of the window, you can see the falling meteor from the quick snippets at key moments. There is more then one meaning "the unexpected virtue of ignorance." Reagan looked through the window, realised everything he did was for not and killed himself. The scene is also vaguely reflective of the toilet paper scene, where he wipes away his nose with humanity.

      That's a stain on the window. I watched the clip in hd several times over. "Actually"? There is no confirmation of actually happened here. Birdman's got some deep stuff going on for sure that isn't straight up said, but it's not Antichrist.

    I just love how this movie mocks artistry and it's ambition to be remembered. How arrogant. That's what all these nature shots at the beginning and near the end are for. Earth won't remember you, so might as well quit your pretentious habit. Look at how insignificant you are, regardless of what you create, that's what this movie is trying to tell.
    There's this one line in the movie summing it up perfectly where Keaton is ranting over a negative review he got in a newspaper and someone (I can't remember exactly who I think it was Zach Galifianakis or however you spell his surname) replies something like "So what? Tomorrow someone's gonna wipe his ass with that newspaper"
    I couldn't find the exact quote but that sums up what this movie is actually about. Inarritu's best film.

    • @MrRHailey
      @MrRHailey 8 років тому +22

      i think it's like "tomorrow that paper's going to be used to scoop up dog shit"....thanks for your comment, I hadn't thought of the movie like that before

    • @vincentknight27
      @vincentknight27 8 років тому +31

      Ryan Hailey Yeah neither did I until I looked at other Inarritu films, as they're all about actual suffering and hardship. And here it seems he makes fun of people in this field because they basically create their own self-indulgent hardship. It helped me understanding Inarritu's message here, as Birdman seems to be a huge departure from his other body of work, but once you look at it that way, it actually quite fits in. Takes it a step further though, if you will.

    Personally, I think that everything following the last suicide scene is how he would have liked things to play out. His relationship with his wife has been redeemed, he reconciled with his daughter, he receives positive critiques and reviews for his performance, people all over the world care about his condition, and he fully integrates with the Birdman and flies out the window. Dude died on stage, for realz, though.

      2001 has no definite philosophical interpretation. We can see it in various ways, such as (probably the most popular theory) the eternal cycle, or many other things. And there are plenty of other movies that deserve a "true philosophical look" (Blade runner for instance, or even My Movie Project/Movie 43, which has been bashed because nobody can interpret jackshit these days).

    No matter how hard we try to be "real" or "realistic", we always end up playing a character, a fake persona that never shows who we really are.
    life is simple a longer and bigger movie, we all have our lines, a director who tells us what to do, what to feel, what to think.
    none of us is real, not because we don't exist, but because we don't allow our true ourselves come to existence.

    If people remember, the beginning of Birdman had Riggan in mid-air, meditating. My opinion is that the final shot of the film, deliberately obscured from the viewer, is RIggan meditating in mid-air. However, the only person who can see him performing the "levitating meditation" would be his own daughter - finally accepting her father for what he was trying to do, despite her resistance throughout the movie

    The use of Carver's "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love" is
    an interesting choice of adaptation for the drama within the film. The
    short story, while critically successful, was Gordon Lish's heavily
    edited version of Raymond Carver's original story, "The Beginners".
    Carver was still credited as the author, but Lish got a lot of positive
    rep for his end of the bargain.

    My theory is: Keaton did drown himself.
    The first shot of the movie shows a beach shore, as well as the last shot before he wakes up in the hospital. At first I didnt pay much attention to it until he mentions his attempted suicide to his ex wife. After that I believe the whole movie is just a dream sequence (which would explain pretty much everything). It's his mind hallucinating right before it gives in and dies.

    I enjoyed this one much better than Batman v Superman but I still feel like there's a lot left out, I wanna see more discussion on the psychological torment which produces both the artist and his work.
    This was definetly an "artist's film" so to speak as it dives into the nitty gritty of what it means to be an artist seeking relevance and recognition for your work which is one way of deriving meaningfulness in your life. It's a careful and uneasy balanceling act, so delicate, between the dream and the madness of a nightmare.

    • @StuArtGo2
      @StuArtGo2 8 років тому

      +TheGoldenDunsparce The movie is about life and death and the duality of man and God, ironically the movie is about the proper way to speak with someone about atheism and why people don't respond well two contradictory information about religiously held beliefs.

    • @TheGoldenDunsparce
      @TheGoldenDunsparce 8 років тому

      Stuart Gould It's message is great, and the movie could have been something special, but it was implemented extremely poorly. They decided it was a better option to try to be funny by filling the movie with literal food porn and gore, which nullified what they had to say. Even South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut was able to get their message across successfully, and most of the movie was fart jokes and children cursing.

      Question: What do you mean by "the duality of man and God"?

    • @StuArtGo2
      @StuArtGo2 8 років тому

      Duality - The quality or condition of two things. By the end of the film it is heavily based on religion and getting people who are complicit in their belief in God to critically analyze their belief system. Duality by the natural of mans testable world and the hypothesis of God and heaven a unverifiable fairytale.

      In a weird way, that kind of makes it sound even more pretentious. I myself got divisive feelings on the movie. Everyone kept hyping it up to high heaven, but then when I go to see it I'm like "I find it more as something interesting to talk about than something I really like"
