I’ve owned almost 60 cars in my life, and nearly every purchase was a mistake. Buying weird old cars was pretty much the original purpose of my entire channel, but nobody should be buying and selling this many cars. It’s not exactly a healthy endeavor, even if it is just for UA-cam! There were quite a few times where I wasted a ton of money fixing a car, or a vehicle sold for way less than I paid for it, or I ended up completely regretting selling a car. Today, let's talk about it!

Ethan, By faithfully documenting your ludicrous purchase blunders, you may be sparing a few individuals from the same fate. On the other hand, most of us need to feel the pain of a short-sighted, spontaneous used car purchase to learn our own lessons. If nothing else, you have provided us with high quality entertainment through your purchase of low quality cars. 😉

While it has been stressful for you, I've enjoyed living vicariously through your questionable vehicle purchases and experiences. The major lessons I have learned from your videos are to be wary of buying a car sight unseen, have a reputable and reliable mechanic in the Rolodex (I'm old enough to have used those!), buy cars that you are passionate about, and enjoy the journey because every vehicle has its own story. I find that nostalgia drives my interest in cars. I'm attracted to cars that I didn't get to own in the 80s and 90s. I'm sure that's why I love your Ford Probe GT the best of all the cars you have posted videos about.

I did a video about my spending, and this video popped up next in recommended, and I checked a few more from this channel as well! Thinking of selling my car now, getting an E-bike, and using car rent if needed, heh.

It sounds like there were some “win some, lose some”. I liked the Grand Am just because I grew up at the time when these were some of the most popular cars in the school parking lot. Also liked the 944 because I just like Porsches. My suggestion is that every car guy/girl needs a friend that can be their sounding board before making a purchase. If you already have one, consider firing them and get another. I would have talked you out of the caddy. Another suggestion is try doing more of your own repairs. UA-cam is a huge source of how-to videos for car repair. I’ve watch Samcrac over the years and watched him become a decent mechanic. He also has help. I’m my daughter’s sounding board right now. She’s looking online for her next cool car. I remind her of rust in t(e northern states, parts availability for kei cars, and staying away from high mileage cars that need a lot. She’s selling a 98 Lexus LS400 mint condition if you’re interested.

It's a learning process. I finally learned that a simple, functional fleet is the best. You can't 'save' every orphan car. I freed up a ton of energy for other things. Helping orphaned pets ! And still look at cool cars without thinking, Oh...I can buy that.

I found this video quite entertaining. If I wasn't so 'financially-humbled' and 'real estate poor' (aka lack of parking space/driveway/garage), I could see myself owning cars just like the ones on this list. Honestly, there are other financially worst decisions in life than buying a car sight-unseen.
Will you be doing a similar video later (when it's convenient, of course) on the fleet of cars you kept? I'm assuming the Chaser and the Chevy Nova Twin Cam are keepers for you.

I started selling on BaT because there is less back and forth with tire kickers, lowballers, and flakes. In nearly every instance on BaT I never even met the buyer, I just shipped the car to them once they paid. I'm on my second VW wagon, an Alltrack SE this time. I'd have made the same mistake with the Fox. Someone in my HS had one of those in the 80s. My version of your Civic Type R was a Kia Stinger GT2. I only put 9k miles on it in 2 years and sold it because I was never driving anymore. I sold it to Carvana in June of 2022 for exactly what I'd paid for it two years earlier. And now that I' m driving into an office 3 days a week, even though it's only a couple of miles' commute, I kind of regret selling it, even though I know it was the financially wise choice. And, heck, I drove a wonderful car for two years, even if I didn't drive it much.

I'm on my 19th car in 7 years. Due to the economy I will be stagnant on 19 for the foreseeable future. There are no sales that I regret, but there are 3 purchases that I sorely regret. A 2011 Subaru Impreza outback sport that I paid full retail for and it was a total mechanical loss so I lost $7500 on it in 5 months after 1000 miles, a 2000 Volvo V70 XC that hadn't been driven in 4 years since I bought it and it needed a miracle worker of both a mechanic and a detailer, lost $2600 on it after 4 months an 600 miles, and a 1987 Jeep cherokee that was totally rusted out and I bought it without realizing it didn't have a working alternator among other significant defects and I lost $1300 on it after 4 days and 150 miles. That jeep did teach me how to drive a manual though so it wasn't the worst thing in the world.

I currently have my 5th car since November 1992, so have kept them pretty long time, probably this way is not for everyone either :D
Shortest time I've owned a car was 3 years 1 month (2001 Nissan Micra) and longest pretty much exactly 9 years, a 1990 Mazda 323 Sedan. My current car is 2016 Kia Rio, bought it new and have kept it nearly 8 years so far, and so far it's been the most reliable and trouble free car. Hopefully it'll continue like this as long as possible :)

It's kinda interesting. Folks talk about EVs and how you need to worry about the battery. We have a 2014 Chevy Volt and it is still fine. We took it in for repairs recently and the Chevy dealer said "Your car is in perfect condition." They just changed the oil for the generator and that was that. I was shocked. Every gas car we had before was basically falling apart at the seams at all times. Every repair was expensive and I dreaded every oil change because of what it would reveal.
I feel like the drastic reduction in moving parts is a huge boon. We got it with 35 miles a charge, now it shows 31 miles. We only drive in town. I even learned something weird. Did you know gas goes stale? If not, me neither! That was a wild discovery. That's how little we have come off battery in a decade. Also saving an absolute butt load of money charging it vs. gasoline. I couldn't even tell you what the price of gas is on any given month.
I only bring this up because you mention having 60 cars. At the rate I'm going that would be 600 years before I caught up. (And obviously the difference in repair issues.)

PS. My first car was a Dodge 400. It was hit by a mobile home and had the left side stripped right off of it (door and all). I remember calling the insurance company and telling them "A house hit my car." I will say, I loved that car with every fiber of my being and would still have it if that hadn't happened. The front seat was basically a bed. It was unbelievably comfortable. I need to get rich and convince someone to convert a Dodge 400 into an electric car...

I drove it home to Phoenix from Tucson and it has sat in the garage ever since. If you’re ever interested in such a vehicle, let me know. I actually bought it off a UA-camr Jayz Garage, so there are many YT videos on which my Trofeo make an appearance.

My thoughts on the project car-UA-cam-viewership issues thing, from my perspective as a Rad-loving viewer:
I love watching you get a new car and going over the ups and downs thoroughly.
I cringe (with the audience) when you hurl yourself headlong into something that was going to be a brick wall from the start (the Caddy is a great example... you admitted you didn't do due diligence and stepped directly on a Northstar landmine)
I love watching (most) cars as you follow up on driving experience and repairs and what have you.
I hate when you get a car that piques my interest and either don't follow up at all, or the follow up happens 6-8 months down the road. My favorite series so far has been the Probe, and you've given us a number of updates, but it still doesn't feel like *enough*.
I think that last bit can easily be attributed to you having double-digit numbers of cars at any given time, and that, as you've mentioned, you feel overwhelmed with projects.
My suggestion (for all it's worth):
    1) you need to have your daily driver fleet of 1-3 vehicles. Family hauler, eco box, truck.. if you'd even use one enough to justify it instead of just renting for a day when you need it. That fleet is not put on UA-cam, and not part of your stable as far as your viewers are concerned.
    2) You then have 1 FUN car that you feature periodically on YT that's in pretty good shape, and you can share your adventures and/or periodic updates as you see fit, or do videos of yourself doing maintenance and upkeep to show your audience you haven't forgotten about it. This car can cycle out every couple of years if you choose, but you can't hoard them. You're required to sell the old one before putting a new one in this spot.
    3) You have NO MORE than 2 project vehicles. These are the ones you bring on and showcase from start to finish, with update frequencies of maybe 2-6 weeks. As with the fun vehicles, you MUST sell one (or promote it to FUN car status after selling a fun car) before you get another one.
    4) It's OK to play with a funky rare car, but you HAVE to put the buy price in a different perspective. If a car's poster wasn't pinned up on kid's walls, it's not worth $3000, no matter how unusual it is. And it's perfectly OK to tell the seller that. They have the choice of hoping for a sentimental buyer to come along later, or take a reasonable offer in the now. Likewise, a well-regarded vehicle with a reputation for reliability that "just looks like it needs a little TLC" most likely needs more than just TLC. (This is the Land Cruiser I'm referring to, but I've burned myself several times doing the same damn thing, most recently with a Toyota Avalon)... so if you're going to go sight-unseen, you should probably significantly reduce your max purchase budget, and have the discipline to walk away when it gets there. That way if you do end up with a steaming pile, you're not out nearly as much.
I honestly believe giving yourself some more structure and giving your brain just a little more say than your heart will lead you to reduced stress, fewer cars gathering dust, and a more productive cycle overall.

There is a saying in the car business: " You make money when you buy, not when you sell." Sounds like you need to change your purchasing tactics in a serious way. I think the impetuous of rare but shitty is not the place to make money. Buying a POPULAR car at a major discount that has lots of rabid fans is where you could actually make money. Not to mention if you want to make money and get your business profitable you should take care of the basics like knowing how much the cars your buying actually cost! Hahaha. This kind of stuff is a learning opportunity for sure.
