Let's recount some of our best/worst car stories. What is your worst car breakdown story? What is the most dangerous thing you’ve ever done in a car? What is the worst car you’ve ever owned? What is the car that brought you the most joy? Let's also talk about what cars we might envision in our future garages. Today I’ve invited my friend Charles over to the studio and we’ll talk about all this and more.

What are some of your memorable car stories? What do you want in your dream garage?

My most memorable car story is driving from SoCal to Houston to pick up my first car. It was a 1985 Mazda RX7 with only about 15k miles on it in 2000. We drove a car out that my uncle had purchased and swapped him for the RX-7. Now, this car was purchased new by my dad in 1986 when he worked for Mazda HQ, and was doing inspections and found he. He bought it, and saved it. 1.1L carbureted with a manual, manual windows, and drum rear brakes. My uncle had been string it for us since we moved to CA about 10 year prior. Seemed like a good idea to do some basic maintenance, and then drive it 2000 miles back to CA. The trip was pretty good until my dad decided at a Hardee's stop it was my turn to drive. I was 14 and had not driven a manual ever. First step was getting up the hill out of the parking lot and back to I-10. I kept stalling trying to get it out until my dad calmly looked over at me and said, "I thought you would be better at this." I promptly revved to about 3k and dropped the clutch and went. Then about 500 miles from home, the carb that was likely gunked up, and a fuel system that was also likely dirty from sitting starting acting up. The car would only get going by dropping the clutch every time we stopped. It would chug and rev oddly the rest of the way. I opened one of the vents to fresh air and a big chuck of dust and dirt hit me right in the face. It was a great trip, and 20+ years later the car has 54k miles, and is still like new in my garage.

The hills coming back to CA from that trip! I bought an old Ford Ranger which had a rusted clutch pressure plate (unknown to me at the time) where I actually had to double pump and then fully drop the clutch to make it past where those windmills in Eastern CA were... what a memory driving back from Houston!

When I was a kid, my dad was taking me and my brother to the mall. The car broke down and me and my family spent the entire day at a convenience store until our minivan got fixed, missing out on the mall.

Cool stories and love the stuff in the background, Commodore 64! Nice diecast cars too, I have the same Matchbox Porsche 928 and Jeep Cherokee from the 80's, my childhood toycars 🙂

To contrast your blue xB, may I suggest a red BX? They would be polar opposites, even coming from opposite sides of the world!

My dream garage would definitely include an imported car we never got in the states, even though I live in California. I would love to have a Chevrolet Firenza Can-Am and a SEAT Leon.

I bought a car, in this case a car with an all aluminum 32 valve V8 that had a broken timing belt. It was an interference engine so I was expecting the worst. Anyways new timing belt, idler pulleys, tensioner, damper and water pump and it was fine, thankfully! The previous owner had told me the T-belt had broken at idle so I figured without the kinetic energy of RPM behind it I may be ok. As well the oil pump is driven by the T-belt. I appreciate all of your uploads!

6:22 I'm not good with geography, but this commercial clip looks like a Citroen BX was being driven in the Southwestern desert of the U.S. despite never being sold in America (unless it was the Australian outback instead 😅)
7:32 full-size spares (tires), not even sure if new cars have spare tires (the tiny 'donuts') at all.

Chevy still makes the Malibu, which I have owned 4 of, including 1 Malibu Maxx. Also Ethan, you forgot to mention the Transport, Silhouette , or Lumina APV.

I'm not sure if it's a car I would like to daily drive, but the '66 Chrysler Imperial used in the Green Hornet movie was for sale recently. You would probably have to keep the popup machine guns down in the hood, though.

The car I’m actively looking for is a 1989-93 dodge spirit, that was my first car, no frills, shared a 4 cylinder from an Audi with all of 89hp. It wasn’t fast but it got the job done and had my first makeout sesh in one (ooh I’m being too spicy for youtube)

Most dangerous car story? Too many to list lol. I live in the rust belt, and have a property in the sticks so i buy alot of rusty junk thats unfit for the road. I take em to my shop property and do all sorts of dumb stuff with them until they're dead. This past new years eve, I had some friends up and decided to chain up my old trailblazer winter rig and kill it. I used my "fast idle stick" to keep the throttle pinned, and let that thing do an unmanned 4x4 burnout. After a minute or so, the rear axle ripped the rest of the way out, that thing took off still spining the front wheels into the concrete k rails i put there just in case of a runaway, and we just let it keep doing a burnout until the bottom end of that 4.2 engine exploded. I do dumb things but i also try to do them safely lol.

Dream garage? I kind of already have it. 1988 Cadillac Cimarron and 1986 Cadillac Seville. Both super clean and low miles. My daily driver is a 2023 Bolt EV. About the only car I would still love to get would be a 1987 Cadillac Fleetwood 60 Special which was a little longer than the normal front drive Fleetwood.
Memorable car stories? Back around 2001 to 2005, I purchased 2 Lincoln Versailes. The first was a 1977 in burgundy that I found in a paper add in Kalimizoo MI. My parents and I drove my new 2001 Lincoln Continental there (about 300 miles) and met the old couple selling it. For some strange reason they didn't want me to drive it outside the gated community. Since it was so clean, I thought it was fine. Purchase made and starting heading home with my parents following in my new Lincoln. The first time I got over 35 MPH, the car shook so bad that I had to find a tire shop and purchase all new tires. We found out that the old guy pumped an entire can of fix a flat into one tire and that's why he didn't want me to do a faster test drive. Finally we made it home safely. The second a few years later was a 1979 Versailles in black that I purchased on Ebay from Nashville, TN. My wife and I drove down to pick it up. The seller was shady as heck and I should have walked away but didn't. Made it home fine, but found out it needed a lot of work.

On my way back from college, I got to the campsite in NoCal at midnight and nearly drove a U-haul off a boat launch ramp. I'm glad my girlfriend was there to stop me.

The worst car I had the displeasure of owning was a 1980 Pontiac Phoenix with the Iron Duke 4 banger coupled to a 3-speed auto column shift. The engine was rough as a cob and liked to stall when I came to a stop at red lights. It would take an expletive-filled rant to get the car going again. The starter went out twice and was replaced. The head gasket blew. The brakes would lock up under hard use. When it did run, it was as slow as molasses on a winter's morning. I traded it in on a 1979 Honda Accord hatchback. The Honda was a far superior car to the pathetic Pontiac. I didn't buy American again until the mid- 90s. The American malaise cars were terrible. The next car I have owned is my current ride, a 2017 Kia Soul! It has the most HP and Torque of any car I have ever possessed. It's fun to drive and it is extremely reliable. My Soul is the polar opposite of the Phoenix.
