  • This is a nasty MOT failure. "Axle swivel pins and bushes swivel pin and/or bush excessively worn Offside Rear [5.1.2(b)(i)]" you can get a tool to help in the removal and refitting but i decided to give it a go. this whole repair took about 7 hours and the spares cost £20.

I have done this jobs a few times. If your ever doing this again you don’t have to disconnect brakes, pipes or anything. Jack back of car up and support on stands, jack axle up a little to take weight off shocks and disconnect shocks at bottom, lower axle/jack enough to get springs out then reconnect shocks. Now you can undo 3 bolts at the bush both sides and the whole assembly will hang/rotate on the shocks. Rotate it so bushes lower enough to access and use a block of wood to hold it there.

So glad I watched your video. Last time I did bushes I took the axle off and did it in a vice. This time I dropped one side of the axle at a time and did itbon the car. The screwdriver method is genius and worked a treat. I did have a bush fitting tool so both sides took me 3 hours.
    Loved the video

Glad I watched this before I did mine. The best tip was to collapse the rear of the bush inwards and then drive a spike through to release the tension. Bit of penetrating spray and a few wallops and it came out in about ten mins. The other side was faster as by then I knew how to attack it. I was fortunate enough to have a puller so didn't have any problem getting the new ones in. I admire your tenacity and innovation in making your own puller though.

Having done this job. You have explained well. Lucky for me I have a small press. So put that on its side and pressed the Bush in and out. Did make it that bit easier.

I’m just doing this at the mo to my Twintop.
For anyone doing it on a Twintop, you need to know that there are two extra chassis brace beams, which bolt to the chassis, which have to be lowered out of the way, in order to drop the rear beam.
There are 3 internal torx bolts at the front on each one and 4 at the rear.
I completely removed the rear ones and loosened the front ones enough, to allow the beams to drop down out the way.
I also didn’t have to disconnect the handbrake cables from the callipers.

I've just done this job on the combo van, same style bushes but mine are longer with a black spacer rings on them as well it's easier to take the axel out to do this job, I took mine out with an air hammer, I tried putting them in with a long bar and 2 nuts but the bar stripped, in the end I put the axel on the bearing press and put them that way.

Ставьте болты изнутри машины, на будущее не нужно будет откручивать треугольник крепления балки от кузова машины.

It’s easy, if you have a ramp, an electric reciprocating saw, an air chisel, and use powerflex bushes (Zafira B -PRF80-1310, lifetime warranty) instead of the impossible to fit factory type ones.
All the hydraulics and wiring can be detached from the axle. 4 bolted on brackets hold the wires and pipes, the parking brake cables are clipped on, and the brake calipers have two bolts each. Undo it all. The hardest part is that the ABS sensor connectors fill full of mud, and have to be carefully scraped out using a bent paper clip before they unplug.
    Then.
Unbolt the bottom of the rear shocks, drop the axle down, and remove the springs.
3 bolts each side hold the bush carrier to the body, undo them and the axle is removed from the vehicle. (It’s a 2 person lift out, heavy.)
Undo the bolt through the centre of of bush..
Cut out the central metal bit of the bush (electric saw) but it probably falls out. Just saw round in the rubber. It gets smelly, burning rubber.
Saw into the bushes (electric saw), and cut the outer aluminium casing in two places about 2cm apart.
Air chisel time. Use a cutter attachment, and follow the two pre-made cuts, and BRRRRRRT, the bush drops out.
Clean the holes. Fit the new bushes by hand, about 1 minute. They also are about the same price as original style ones.
Takes about 2 hours. Maybe 3.

i have just asked one garage and the quote was £320. i guess you would have to ask around to get a true amount? (ps the car is only worth scrap value!)
