That is a cool way to launch. That aircraft went straight up like it was a rocket, not powered by an ole fella with Parkinson’s. Regulations or policies that are ambiguous or are contradictory within the context of the applicable sections, are non-enforceable anyway. Good on you for challenging the stupidity! Happy flying.

I built a Brolga with my father when I was 10. I used to carry it down the local park every afternoon and every weekend. Flew it for hours upon hours, until the sunlight was almost gone. Old people, young people, middle people, strange people, great people, they'd all come over for a look and a chat and the Brolga (2,000mm wing span) never failed to put a smile on people's faces. Never had an accident, never hurt anyone or damaged any property, and no one ever told the little 10 year old with a glider twice his size to, "stop flying that, it's dangerous". The world we live in today is just getting ridiculous, it actually makes me angry. I'm a veteran and would like to think I fought for the next generation to enjoy the freedoms I loved as a kid, but no, they've ruined all of that. What I'd do for 10 minutes in a locked room with some of these politicians that make the rules that are ruining the simple pleasures in life. I get that some people are irresponsible, and we need to protect the public from them, but the government introduced rules that prevented doing so. You see, in the "old days", when someone was acting the clown, they'd get a good and proper ass kicking. But that's not allowed any more either!
This reminds me of when the roads and traffic authority in Australia banned almost all motorcycles by accident because the lawmakers had never see a bike before. I will never use an ID, nor seek a permit. I've been flying since I was 13, and flying model planes and helicopters and later drones since well before then. My method of avoiding regulations is I never fly them where I am visible or accessible to a complainant and use repeaters.
Just had bonfire night here in UK. Wanted to fly my FPV 130g drone...need operator ID, flyer ID, spotter, and to make sure nobody is close by. But wait right there while my mad cousin Dan launches 3KG of rockets into the night sky with crowds close by with nothing but a desire for mayhem needed. Safe.
Agreed the rules were drafted by people with no knowledge of the sport . From those rules you have shown both of your aircraft are compliant and do not require a permit . The electric plane is under the weight limit and the glider has no power source . Happy flying .
Bravo sir, this is a worldwide trend and I could not have said it better myself. The people in the sport should have the only say in what is safe or not. Regulators and rule makers know absolutely nothing about this hobby.

In the USA, a town can require permits or ban drones entirely, but because only the federal government can regulate airspace, the local laws can only apply to takeoff and landing. If I go to a park where drones are banned, I can legally go across the street, launch my drone, then fly it over the park and I can even walk into the park grounds holding my controller and there's nothing the local town can do about that, although they can still arrest for the sake of harassing me since the charges won't hold up in court.
You made a great point with rules vs real safety! For gliders - just glue with a piece of scotch type a micro toy electric motor and a coin battery to your glider and voila - you are compliant ! Stupidity runs both ways : )

Good for you man!!! What a bunch of Karens. As a hobbyist myself it ticks me off to see so many rules. While i mainly do RC cars i do own a drone thats above the non-permit weight limit of regulations. Legally i have to have my 3DR SOLO registered. Which hasn't been hard to do ( i had to i do live near a small airfield so in that case its understandable), but its the factor that ticks me off. All because a few things happened with them so we have all these rules now. Some immature hobbyists out there went a little crazy, and those hotshots downtown take it too personal and slap everyone with rules.
The Tokoroa Council are very obviously have an unfounded hatred towards model aircraft and real aircraft users at the local airstrip. It reminds me of CB radio in the 70's I was in Australia where CB was illegal and New Zealand had their 26mhz CB band so a huge number or Australians developed NZ call signs, I used to be Wellington 768 and chatted away anytime skip was open to NZ. The aus PMG tried to stop imports so we converted old Pye taxi radios from 75 mhz to 27 by trippling all the coils and fresh Xtals. Across Australia there are an increasing number of unregistered aircraft, airplanes, helicopters and gyroplanes whose owners just dont bother complying with the regs and do their own thing. Why, because the Authorities abuse their power, have dishonest and corrupt selfish motivations that serve only their own burocratic goals that use public safety as a subterfuge for their own corrupt enterprises. Community safety is for the community by the community and rogue councils like the Tokoroa are destroying their own credibility and displaying an unbelievable level of contempt that makes them an international embarassment. The destruction of the Air Traffic control Tower and shutting down the model airfield are two examples of their corrupt actions that make them an international embarrasment to New Zealand. Lets hope Bruce runs for Mayor but that would probably force him to be with the worst of NZ society.
I gave up drone flying purely because of the ridiculous amount of regulation. Used to be a fun hobby, then it became such a chore just to find somewhere to fly. So now I don't bother. I really liked your video and your screen presence is top notch. Liked and subbed 👍
I flew my DLG's a number of times this year with surprisingly no issue. In fact it draws attention of children in their mothers car asking her to pull over and watch me. But I'm sure at some point someone will have to say something. But luckily I have very secluded spots and hills. I do however have to stay away from one location because they have horse training and my powered planes scare them. Mind you I was flying my screaming F-27 then. DLG's are a different kind of peace when out at the park and thermalling them is just out of this world!
Well said. And what about people out there that use this hobby to help them cope with overcoming mental stress and wellbeing! Many people use the hobby to get away from daily stresses of everyday life.
this is a symptom of human behavior. I spent 35 years working for a large corporation. The amount of rules that were added during that time is staggering. Most of them would be considered *common sense,* yet, the pencil pushers required that all employees _document_ compliance using various web based tools. Productivity and motivation go down the drain. Some call it value add - I call these rules *_value subtract_*
"If the rules were fit for their purpose, then simply focusing on safety you would automatically be compliant BUT the fact that you can be safe without compliance shows the deficiency in the rules" - Bruce I would also add, just because we have a rule, it doesn't keep people from doing stupid harmful stuff! If people are taught to always look to the "expert" who has proven they are unqualified for their position, then how does anyone learn anything? Learn to think for themselves thereby relying on common sense or what I like to call uncommon sense these days. Haha
Proves the point how inept the idiots really are . Thanks Bruce for showing us how inept they truly are. Just be safe and have fun I see a Great decline in the hobby as well , even I am not flying like I was. In fact I have flew only one day the entire year ( i had many flights that day BUT ) still only one day The Fun and video sharing and the laughable moments made it better, now you can not share video or the funny moments anymore without some one trying to attack you or maybe even try and fine you and You tube making a dollar they refuse to give me...not worth it anymore But I will fly more soon, this year was an odd year and had so many other things happening, next year Lord willing it will not be so busy. Keep up the Great work Bruce
If I understood what you read correctly, it's possible the glider would be considered unpowered, not powered "by any means other than electric" (paraphrasing), and therefore not need a permit.
It's probably coming down the line. Step outside the realm of working and paying taxes, ie doing anything mildly fun, and tyranny will seemingly appear.
Spot on Bruce. 100% agree with you mate! Your councillors need to learn some humility and understand they are there to serve the community. Far too often do they get too big for their boots and try to establish a fiefdom in the name of their increasingly large egos.
Seems like regulators fail to understand that folks have been flying 5 meter gliders at thousands of feet for many many decades. And we've been doing it safely. That's a lovely little glider you have there! I'd like to build one like that for the baseball field.
Hi Bruce hope you are well. A couple of questions for you. Is that play equipment you were using to exercise on rated as safe for your type of usage? and would you not have been safer if you were wearing a helmet too? I could see potential for injury from either a fall from hight or a head impact on the bar. You know I jest of course, stick it to them Bruce. ATB from the UK.
The problem with the South Waikato District Council is they have prejudice and discrimination directed at Mr Simpson. This is usually because of Ignorance. this is usually because there is a lack of critical thinking and problem-solving skills within the council .this in turn leads to conflict and war because ,once again prejudice, Ignorance, and discrimination against just one member of the public within the council.

Amen brother! I'm with you all the way! I can not stand our government nor the ones that make such crazy laws. Then there's the ones in charge of something they have never done themselves. A major part of what's wrong with this world.
There is no substitute for 'common sense' Bruce. None of the rules or rule makers include common sense. If I didn't live on the opposite side of the World in Scotland I'd like to drop by for a beer and good company.
We have a poor area to fly at in Phoenix AZ, they set it up under a take off path of the small deer valley airport. Upwind of a large freeway, in a high wind funnel area. So the majority pick much safer places elsewhere to fly.

I was in Australia where CB was illegal and New Zealand had their 26mhz CB band so a huge number or Australians developed NZ call signs, I used to be Wellington 768 and chatted away anytime skip was open to NZ.
The destruction of the Air Traffic control Tower and shutting down the model airfield
are two examples of their corrupt actions that make them an international embarrasment to New Zealand.
Lets hope Bruce runs for Mayor but that would probably force him to be with the worst of NZ society.
Well stated.
Great vid Bruce, you could have used one of those car seats in the middle of park! 👍
I never thought of that... :)
That’s why I put a teddy bear in all my airplanes.
this is a symptom of human behavior.
Not only are servos electric motors... you could put a small electric motor, not connected to anything, in the glider for ballast.
So where did you hide the bodies?
"If the rules were fit for their purpose, then simply focusing on safety you would automatically be compliant BUT the fact that you can be safe without compliance shows the deficiency in the rules"
- Bruce
I would also add, just because we have a rule, it doesn't keep people from doing stupid harmful stuff! If people are taught to always look to the "expert" who has proven they are unqualified for their position, then how does anyone learn anything? Learn to think for themselves thereby relying on common sense or what I like to call uncommon sense these days. Haha
Wow for how long did I wait for a chill glider flight, love it!
Idk that pointy bit on the end of your DLG could poke someone's eye out even at 7mph, bloody dangerous and irresponsible 😂 enjoy your flying Bruce.
What a wonderful video! I love your views on the beuroacy and the associated stupidity!. We must all resist this
Proves the point how inept the idiots really are . Thanks Bruce for showing us how inept they truly are. Just be safe and have fun
I see a Great decline in the hobby as well , even I am not flying like I was. In fact I have flew only one day the entire year ( i had many flights that day BUT ) still only one day
The Fun and video sharing and the laughable moments made it better, now you can not share video or the funny moments anymore without some one trying to attack you or maybe even try and fine you and You tube making a dollar they refuse to give me...not worth it anymore
But I will fly more soon, this year was an odd year and had so many other things happening, next year Lord willing it will not be so busy.
Keep up the Great work Bruce
As an electric skateboarder in NZ dealing with out of date and non existant regulations, go for it old mate.
If I understood what you read correctly, it's possible the glider would be considered unpowered, not powered "by any means other than electric" (paraphrasing), and therefore not need a permit.
Do you have a pacemaker Bruce? That would make you electric.
Nah... I'm 100 percent manually operated.
I was expecting a constable to appear and clap you in irons. 😊
I have a question, are they going to regulate kite flying as well? I wonder about RC cars? Way too much government control on toys.
Kites (in the US) have been regulated for decades. Most people don't exceed the statutory limits so it doesn't matter.
Hello from Taupo. My father always used to say that laws (rules) are made for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men.
I fly fixed wing. I will not comply with any tyrants rules. And my entire club now flys armed.. this is a fight they don’t want.
Probably your best observations because we're still not paying attention. Fly safe and let the regulations catch up,
love your channel and your input. keep fighting the good fight
There are more two-legged sheep in NZ than there are woolies.
Seems like regulators fail to understand that folks have been flying 5 meter gliders at thousands of feet for many many decades. And we've been doing it safely.
That's a lovely little glider you have there! I'd like to build one like that for the baseball field.
I take it you cant throw a frisbee in the park then lol. Great video Bruce.
I think the rule makers have forgotten that each one of us has a duty of care to ourselves and others even when walking down the street.
Would love to see some vlogs around Tokoroa while flying. We drove through on the 1 this afternoon. Didn't get to stop to explore will on the way back through. Did see a plane in pattern for the airport
i absolutely agree with you, and its every where my friend theses stupid rules that just dont make sense. thanks for standing up we need more like you in the world.
Just about to get into RC planes with my Son, so wading into the world through UA-cam first. First time watching your channel, and it's refreshing to hear your rant, being an outsider looking in, I was expecting the opposite. Appreciate you, well said.
And my son has RC plane at the TOP of his Christmas list! Any recommendations?!
All Right!! Bruce, finally go fly your models.I can't fly mine today because it's too cold and windy. We had a cold front come thru, thank God I flew last Wednesday when the weather was warm and light winds.
IVE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS. gonna fly my 2kg airplane with 4 motors on it and broadcast on Band B channel 8 @ 2w in a local park.
Honestly proud of you, I learned a lot!
Now we see a real test, you gave it hell Vas. Very minor damage after all that. After the Xtr im a huge fan of Corally now.
good to see you still doing what u do best bruce
There is nothing better than flying 121m high without a spotter, fpv without a permit beyond line of site with a model of 1.51kg :)
Amen brother! I'm with you all the way! I can not stand our government nor the ones that make such crazy laws. Then there's the ones in charge of something they have never done themselves. A major part of what's wrong with this world.
Your glider is electric powered, you run a battery to control it, so 4.2(b) applies.
"powered" has a specific meaning re "motive power" here....
What do your fellow rc flyers at the airfield feel about your dispute with the council ? Haven’t seen any comments from them.
How does a "Permit" make that dangerous airplane safer?....Unless it was not dangerous to begin with.
There is no substitute for 'common sense' Bruce. None of the rules or rule makers include common sense. If I didn't live on the opposite side of the World in Scotland I'd like to drop by for a beer and good company.
Seems like people who make regulations need spotters!
We have a poor area to fly at in Phoenix AZ, they set it up under a take off path of the small deer valley airport. Upwind of a large freeway, in a high wind funnel area.
So the majority pick much safer places elsewhere to fly.
And rubber band planes are just weapons, 🤔
I did say that 'recalcitrance is sometimes the preferred option'.
Oh wow, I just noticed-- your channel was made the day I was born! What a coincidence
Defense: the servos count as electric motors.
The definition section excludes free flight models from RPA (drone) rules.
Muscle ups on repeat! here from uav futures, 07 respect my dude.
