  • I recently worked on this dresser makeover while live streaming here on UA-cam. I wanted to share the process of painting this provincial dresser using water based latex paint, stripping and staining the top, using wood stain as an antique glaze, and highlighting it all with some gold wax. I hope you enjoy this video! Feel free to join my painting community on Discord: / discord

Funny, I loved the original color and was disappointed he was going to paint it. Then when he painted it I loved the light blue and the light colored top and was disappointed when he was going to stain it darker. Then he stains it darker and, you guessed it, I love it! Goes to show that I should withhold judgment until the entire process is complete. Awesome job.

You do the best job I can see on internet. The quality of your piece is incredible and you have an eye for tones. Some people just slap on paint for quick change, you create a piece of art.

I have the exact same 4 piece bedroom set that was my mothers. It's 56 years old. It been sitting in my cellar for quite some time now. The original color was an off white leaning more towards the white side with the gold trim. Over the years it did turn yellowish just like the one you just did. I keep it because it's a good piece of furniture and I don't have the heart to throw it away because it has no damage except for the paint. The one you painted came out beautiful! However, I prefer the original color. I wish I knew somebody like you who could restore it back to it's original beauty. Love your channel!

You are an artist and a genius. You have taken a cheap looking French Provincial dresser that the Goodwill rejected and before our eyes transformed it into a gorgeous piece that looks like it came from a suite in a 5-star Paris hotel. You are a Master at your craft, that is for certain. I can't imagine who the 19 morons are who gave this a thumbs down. Obvisouly someone who doesn't know beauty and art when they see it. This is a very thorough refinishing job . My grand daughter is using her mother's childhood dressers that are like the one in the video. They are made from maple and I hope that they are professionally repainted in the near future to modernize them. I found dressers without the French Provincial style but by the same company that no longer exists. Again very durable furniture that was purchased for a fraction of the original cost. There is a business Studio 3580 in Carp which is just outside of Ottawa that painted my maple bedside table that looks excellent .

I have this complete set, from my childhood. Don't you dare try to calculate my age. I'm older than that. ;P This small dresser, a tall dresser-on-dresser, two nightstands, Queen headboard, and two different jewel cases. I purchased a couple of the pieces as an adult when I saw they matched this set.
I love how well made it is. Solid wood and lovely lines. I stripped it to bare wood, conditioned the wood, and went to town with a true flamingo pink. Kind of a brilliant saturated coral. Warm "gunstock" wood stain as an antiquing glaze. Copper wax to the edges. Fresh copper hardware I made to resemble botanical elements, sealed to keep it bright and avoid tarnish. It's a very different look than what you have done. Just goes to show how much the finish can impact the vibe.
I guess my point is this: Do something that speaks to you and it'll be fine! No wrong answers.
I do enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing your expertise!

Yes. It is often sold before I put the video up. You can do it. Just takes practice. I've got over 800 pieces under my belt!

    Beautiful absolutely beautiful!
I had a triple dresser exactly like that one so I had nine drawers. Also it had a chest of drawers and two nightstands and a head and footboard. It belonged to my grandmother. I couldn't stand it and couldn't wait to get rid of it.
Alas that was over 40 years ago so I don't have any regrets about that.
You did a magnificent job and I am overly impressed. I could never imagine that dresser looking so good!!
    All the best! 👍👍👍😊

I used to have this same dresser in the 60s 70s. Wish I had it now. My dresser had a matching mirrior with it. My parents got rid of it when I went to college. Look on the back should be some mirrior brackets. Dresser looks so beauiful you refurbished. What a fantastic job.

Hey Shaddy Guy was there a reason you painted the symbol the 'Sun Cross' when you where painted on the wood stain on the side of the dresser?

I was wondering when someone was going to ask this question. 😃 I sometimes do some sort of cross or X to spread the stain around before doing the full brush strokes. I have no idea why I did it that way this time, nor have I ever knew the many different meanings of the symbol. I thought it was interesting for the video and wondered if anyone would say anything.

Thank you for your reply I did consider if you were making a subversive political statement by painting he Sun Cross but I am not a conspiracy theorist. I love your videos guy I find them relaxing. In a disposable society I applaud you reusing and revitalising pieces of furniture that may have otherwise ended their time in land fill. Keep us inspired. Thank you.

Wow!!!! You are refinishing the exact piece I have in my bed room. I got mine from a charity thrift organization about 20 years ago. My mom always liked this style of furniture so l was drawn to it when I first saw it.. Like you, I remember having to apply stripper multiple times to remove the original finish completely. Something about whatever the manufacturer used for this piece 60 or 70 years ago was done in several layers and took some effort to get off.. I used some orange stuff from Home Depot that actually smelled like oranges. I'm not a pro like you but I like how it turned out. Yours is amazing. Great job.
