This was the look I was going for, but I think I can find a better piece for a clear finish. I always appreciate your feedback as I continue to share my journey. Thank you for your support. Barry
Beautiful ❤ thanks for sharing your labour of love Barry. Never watched a video of yours that doesn't motivate. Everything you say is always on point only if one does restorations can one relate.
I was actually thinking at first, that the previous owner had made this their own by uniquely painting it with flowers. As it’s not a high end piece, I was thinking it acceptable. Then you stripped it and gave it that beautiful rustic, farmhouse look. Each to their own of course, but your finish is my choice. It’s incredibly simplistic and beautiful. You’re not often wrong with your choices Barry, because you understand your medium and your market. Brilliant!
Great job on this beautiful old piece. I, too, love the original look to old antique furniture. Quarter sawn oak is one of my favorites. I have several pieces in this style. Everything I own is a natural finish, no paint! When we were building our house, the only thing painted was the drywall! My granny used to tell me I was an old soul. I, too, love old things and can for as long as I can remember. Proof of that is my husband! He's almost 15 years older than me and we've been married 39 years this month. Have a great day, and God bless!
I know there's a niche market for painted furniture with appliques and all that. I also know that I have seen several pieces of furniture like that land in thrift stores marked to sell at a greatly reduced price. I love seeing pieces like that get a new lease on life after the right restoration! Great job, Barry! The wood grain on this dresser is fantastic and should be seen, not hidden under awful paint! ❤
My sister-in-law painted my father's mid-century farmhouse chest of drawers with red and white acrylic paint and added Strawberry Shortcake decals. I was SO glad when my brother divorced her... Granted, it wasn't over the chest, but still!
It always fascinates me that someone would paint quarter-sawn oak. I agree with you, Barry. I would have gone for a darker stain. But I applaud you for knowing your buyers. It came out beautiful.
There was a period of time in the 1960's and 1970's when people were painting furniture all the time. I remember in the 1970's when you could buy special paint for furniture that was called Antiquing. The process of painting beautiful wood ruined the furniture. People painted furniture at the time because they were unable to buy new furniture. The furniture sold at the time when people were painting the old stuff was poor quality. The Sears Roebuck and Company Catalogue from 1900 to 1920 has a lot of pictures of furniture sold at the time that looks like this dresser.
Barry I so enjoy watching your videos and it's people like yourself that have inspired me to do furniture renovation/restoration myself. Keep it up mate. Asim from England
Stunning restoration Barry. Another piece I would love to own. I really admire how you reclaim the original soul yet modernise it . Can’t wait for the next project🙏🏻🙏🏻👏👏🤞❤
OMG! I literally got shivers when you removed the first strip of paint remover. Even the knobs, this piece was headed for the dump. It's now a gorgeous piece to last for many more years. Great job!
It was worth every penny bit of time and energy to redo that beautiful pieces. I am very partial to oak pieces and have a very hard time painting them. 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Every style of finish can look beautiful in the right surroundings. You've given that nice little dresser a chance to fit in where a traditional finish would be out of place. Someone with a different design preference can now enjoy a beautiful piece with age and character.
Ahhh, Barry, your videos are too short! I love watching you work and enjoy your quiet narrative. You found a treasure and gave it the TLC it deserved. Thanks for this peaceful respite.
Barry, you are truly doing the work you were intended to do. This will not burn you out like aged care did. It’s great that you did that caring work for so long, but the body can only take so much strain. Thank you for that service you did. But, golly, gee! You were just MADE to do this work! Every piece I’ve seen you “do” has been so pleasing to the eye and done so sympathetically, such as this very one! I was wondering where you are in this episode!? You really are generous with your pricing! You could ask double, even triple that $200 and it would still be a bargain, because it looks sooooo good and is sturdy and of good quality timber. No wonder you are so popular, both on video and in sales. You’re a real nice bloke! ❤️😊🦘🇦🇺
Beautiful job Barry! I have a soft spot for these pieces, they may have been mass produced but they are well built and oak is so durable with a little care.
This is my first time watching your videos .. your love for the pieces and process is evident. Who ever wrote your dialogue is very prolific! A most enjoyable video! Thank you for sharing!
Handsome piece--and a remarkable transformation. Thank you for bringing back a part of our history and giving new life to the lovely wood hidden underneath.
Nice presentation, especially as the carpet picks up the warm colours of the wood. It reminds me of the dresser that was in our summer cottage, it was old when my parents bought the cottage and we had a lively discussion who would keep it when we finally sold the cottage 40 years later. I wasn’t the lucky recipient but it still has a special place in my sister’s home, so it’s all good. Since we are now in our late 70’s, her family are likely to soon repeat the discussion about it’s next move. It’s a treasure that will stay in our extended family.
I love that type of wood. I personally would have tried a light stain. That said your work as always made this piece just lovely. I guess you know best. Welcome back. It’s been a bit, happy to see you back and healthy.
Well, well, well. I don't know if its the staging or just your expert hands, but I never thought the outcome of bleaching Tiger Oak would win me over. But you did! It is now a piece of furniture that just adds interest and sophistication to the room. It's something you don't necessarily stop and stare at... at least I wouldn't, but it just grounds an room and tells guests you get it! I would purchase it in a heart beat... if I wasn't planning on living in a van.😂😄
I love it! Sometimes leaving some of life's scars on a piece is just fine. We all have scars from just living our lives. I still have my tiger oak dresser my mom got many decades ago. And a buffet, with a mirror attached. I love them both.
I might have to give that sander a try! Beautiful job Barry! I love how you take the resale value into consideration when deciding how much work to put in. That is a very good tip!
I have the same dresser including the mirror and key for the locks. It was my grandmother 's. I've never been tempted to alter its original finish. Glad to see that you could restore this one.
It turned out great, Barry! You made the right choice! I think the way you refinished it, it will stand the test of time and trends! It's beautiful! The buyer got a great deal!
Barry, I love everything that you do. Your finishes are always beautiful. This piece came out perfct. You could not have made a better choice. I have a simple pine dresser that I cannot paint. I love to see the wood grain.
It is nice to see the reality of flipping refinished furniture, and great that the payment was so readily returned on this piece. It is also useful to note that some people like a quality piece even in a relatively plain state like this. Thanks for the video!
One of the best ones…people are loving the more raw wood look for their homes instead of the heavy dark furniture looks! Especially on a piece that is not mid century modern! Do more pieces like this please❤
I love the whorls in the Tiger oak they truly make the piece shine through. I know that you would do something like this dresser again. Call it a labor of love and beauty. This dresser looks beautiful and you did the right thing in going with a light color of wax for a finish. Have a great day
As always, your decision as to the direction to take with this piece was dead on point in my opinion. Todays designers want pieces that are light, bright and make a statement in the room which this piece certainly does. I understand why some will paint a piece verses a total refinish, I’m grateful that there are old souls like yours to help save, refinish and restore these gorgeous pieces of furniture. Thank you Barry and God Bless. ✝️🙏🏻🇺🇸🥰😘
Breathtaking! Decisions made were spot on. Don’t question what you feel is right for a piece. The end product never fails to amaze us. Thank you…you are evolving with each piece you touch.
Some people just don't like the wood look. They maybe think it's "dated" or tired looking. Personally I love a good natural wood piece and while I think the paint job on this was done by someone with real talent, it would have been neater to have it on a more modern piece or a reproduction
Salut Barry tu as fait un excellent travail comme toujours c'est un très beau meuble je te félicite et remercie de partager votre savoir-faire et expérience, bonne semaine 👍👍👍👍👍
Mad City can do some mad work. This is absolutely gorgeous. Ur channel is so good, soothing, and it's relaxing. It's therapy just watching. Thank you, great job.😊👍🏾
Thank you for saving this lovely little dresser. You are one of my favorite go-to channel for quality refinishing. I once saw a “refinisher” who stripped then partially painted a gorgeous ebony buffet! I couldn’t believe what I was seeing?! It was so sad!
I absolutely love this finish. Remember you won't please everyone as people have different tastes and not all good. You will always have negative comments even after completing a masterpiece. Unfortunately, people just like to moan and be negative as thats social media. I think you are very talented. Keep up the great work ❤

Hi Barry, thank you for the new post. I enjoy your channel so much, you have the calm presentation that both educated and entertains. Your work is beautiful and brings out the best that the piece can be. I recognized the tiger oak instantly. It's beautiful and should be a felony crime to paint over. IMO, of course. I'd be mighty tempted to find a place for it in my place.
Good rescue on the dresser. Around 1970, it was popular to "antique" furniture. I saw a maple dresser get partially (project abandoned) painted blue with the brown wash. Later regretted.

I’m not sure you meant ‘simplistic’.
@@Calamitytoo it is a made to look simplistic finish, not a simplistic task.
I can see why you stopped. That grain is to die for. The piece turned out beautiful
The finish choice is perfect for the current trend in home decorating. I could see this in an entry hall providing great storage.
A wonderful restoration and rescue. It must be difficult to part with such items. Well done.
Thank you 😊
Lovely piece Barry. That wood was beautiful. Thank you for uploading this video.

Eu não entendo que tipo de pessoa não gosta do acabamento original desta linda madeira. 🤷🏻♀️ Saudações do Brasil! 🇧🇷
Barry, love your dry sense of humor throughout the video! 😂. Another killer video.
I was totally surprised by how beautiful it looked with just a wax finish. $200 was a steal!
Excellent job, please continue doing it. You are a master in restoration 🎉
This looked like something I would have painted as a teenager. great job!

Yes it definitely is modern farmhouse and looks lovely. You excelled yourself yet again. Love your channel and commentary. 🤗🇦🇺
Thank you again 😁
Beautiful! Just Beautiful!
Thank you so much!
That dresser has very nice lines. It looks so nice now that it has a new lease on life.
It always fascinates me that someone would paint quarter-sawn oak. I agree with you, Barry. I would have gone for a darker stain. But I applaud you for knowing your buyers. It came out beautiful.
dark stain always makes me sad
If the stain was as orange as it looked after he wiped it down, I absolutely understand. Overly gold/orange oak is not attractive IMO.

Was für eine tolle Arbeit. Endlich wird nicht irgendeine dunkle Kreidefarbe aufgetragen. Das schöne Holz kommt wieder zur Geltung. Das mag ich sehr.
Absolutely gorgeous Barry, love the natural wood grain! Thank you for sharing this awesome video! Stunning job! 😊❤

You really achieved the look you were going for with the finish. Simple, elegant and true to the time period. Another great restoration/rescue.
I love what you did with that dresser. You revealed its natural beauty.
Thank you 😊
Barry, another beautiful job! Not too dark. Your aesthetic that you planned came thru...very lovely

Love it. It’s beautiful and I’m sure you’ll do it again, as you always do, as you love the old furniture as much as I do.
I have one lime this waiting to breathe. Now I'm even more excited to see what I find underneath all the paint and contact paper!!

Kind enough to paint inside parts of the dresser, lol love that!
Turned out beautiful, as usual.❤❤❤
