    @NTom92 - The wand is irrelevent, the ball tracking demo consisted of a ball on the end of a stick/wand too, the light is just a replacement for the ball, but again with no gyros, no accelerometers, no motion sensors.
    For the links work (just tested them), you need to cut and paste them to the end of youtube(.)com. Alternatively, search YT for 'Richard Marks Motion Controller Part 1' and go to 4:41, and for the other vid, search for 'Camspace' and watch the first vid.
    (Got to go to work now)

    Kinect is a copy of Eyetoy anyway... but the big difference is that the Eyetoy WORKS

  • @MTMind2
    @MTMind2 13 років тому

    @NTom92 - Cont'd - At NO time did Sony ever have a patent (or even a prototype) for a motion sensing wand. In December 2004, they filed a patent for a wand with a light on the end, to overcome the problems of tracking coloured balls under different lighting conditions (and to avoid the need for calibration). The FIRST evidence (from any source) of a motion sensing wand from Sony comes from the patent they filed in October 2008. Hence the idea for a motion sensing wand does come from the Wiimote.

  • @MTMind2

    @MTMind2 I know but is mass effect 3 on the ps3 aswell?

  • @MTMind2
    @MTMind2 13 років тому

    @Naughtonator - Motion control started before EyeToy. EyeToy/PSEye are just (very good) webcams, and so they can only see your body in 2D, hence the 2D motion tracking of Kung Fu Live, fine for that game, useless for dancing. Both Kinect and Move work in the dark. Both Kinect and Move lag, where Kinect's lag is similar to Move when tracking the hands only (about 1/8th sec), but Kinect's lag increases as more body parts are tracked, hence maximum lag for full body tracking (about 1/5th sec).

  • @MTMind2
    @MTMind2 12 років тому

    @sebkav88 - Ok, I see what you mean, sorry it's the way I wrote it :-)
    I wasn't saying Mass Effect 3 was exclusive to 360, I was saying voice commands in Mass Effect 3 is currently exclusive to 360. That's because Kinect has a built-in audio processor that does most of the work, and so voice recognition can be added without using up power that should be used for the game. The PC and PS3 version will need software running on the CPU to do that. It may happen, but it hasn't been announced as yet.

  • @MTMind2
    @MTMind2 13 років тому

    @Naughtonator - 3D is the keyword here. PSEye can see your body parts in 2D only, that's why Kung Fu Live is 2D motion tracking only. Both Move and Kinect start with a webcam, where for 3D Move adds a motion sensing wand to track your hands only, and Kinect adds an IR cam and emmiter to track your whole body. The space restriction for Kinect is only slightly more than Move, and I've already covered the issues of lag. But yes, both are superb new controllers with pros and cons for each. :-)

  • @MTMind2
    @MTMind2 13 років тому

    @doppen99 - The EyeToy was limted to 2D motion detection (and simple depth techniques), hence the EyeToy games were limited. Kinect sees the world in 3D, it models the human body in 3D, and hence it's significantly more advanced. And Kinect already has a controller, the standard 360 controller. Kinect on it's own is mostly suited to casual/party games, however hardcore genres will use the 360 controller as normal with Kinect adding extra features to the game (just like Forza 4).

  • @MTMind2

    @hoidoeitotziens - Actually you need to read more carefully :-) I'm fully aware that the ball is tracked in 3D, where the size of the ball is used to determine distance along the Z axis, however I said, and I quote, "as a result can only track PEOPLE in 2D at best", which is the key point. Because it has no direct means to measure distance, it doesn't know how far away any part of your limbs are, hence it can only see/track PEOPLE in 2D, where a perfect example of this is seen in Kung Fu Live.

    @TheBeastMode187 - And what makes you think a microphone does the voice recognition for you? :-) You need software to then process the audio, and Kinect has a built-in audio processor to do that (and so it doesn't use up any CPU time on the 360). The PC and PS3 versions will need the CPU to do that processing, which is why only the 360 version (so far) of Mass Effect has voice recognition, without needing a seperate mic, all thanks to Kinect according to the developers. So, you were saying? :-)

  • @MTMind2
    @MTMind2 13 років тому

    @isco919 - Yeah, let's avoid a flamewar (especially since it will be 2011 soon in my part of the world :)). Kung Fu Live reveals the limits of webcams, because it's based on analysing 2D video, and that's why despite EyeToy coming out 7 years ago and PSEye 3 years ago, they offer nothing like the videos I provided. But yes, Kinect is not more 'advanced in every way', because as a webcam only, PSEye is faster (60fps vs 30fps), but the 3D tech makes Kinect more advanced overall. Happy New Year :)

  • @MTMind2
    @MTMind2 12 років тому

    @TheBeastMode187 - If they want to use Kinect on it's own, yes, just as you wouldn't use the Move wand to drive in GT5.However for core games, Kinect ADDs to the controller, providing features like head tracking (as seen in Forza 4), voice commands (Forza 4, and Mass Effect 3). Hence like Forza and ME3, FPSs can use the 360 controller with Kinect adding features like head tracking, leaning, voice commands, perhaps special melee attacks, grenade throwing etc. Surely you can think of a few more :)

    @Aquilalore If your point is wich is the first motion WORKING, you dont know when the power glove started development, and you dont know if other companys(like Sega) in the past atempted such things and never talked about and released it. So in terms of comercial available motion is fair to say the Power Glove worked (and yeah a comercial failure). Besides this, having the Eyetoy doesnt mean exactly they had they Move control (and nunchuk-like complement) wich is so similar to the Wi-control set

  • @MTMind2
    @MTMind2 12 років тому

    @MrAristocrates - And that's the point, there were no Move prototypes (the Move patent was filed in 2008). Richard Marks investigated 100% webcam object tracking, that was superb work, and yes you can see the idea is there, but they couldn't take it further. The Wii gave them the solution, instead of making the webcam do ALL the work, you put as much of the motion sensing as you can INSIDE a controller. That's the key to the Wiimote, that's the key to Move, and so the credit goes to Nintendo.

    They showed off 13 exclusives at E3 2013. They still have yet to show us more. I think most of them are amazing. They're actually hiring developers to develop exclusives, instead of having internal Sony studios develop them. In my opinion, Microsoft's option is better.

  • @MTMind2
    @MTMind2 12 років тому

    @TheBeastMode187 - Just saw your reply. I shall refer you to the first reply I gave, where I said and I quote "Hence like Forza and ME3, FPSs CAN use the 360 controller with Kinect adding features like head tracking, leaning, voice commands, perhaps special melee attacks....". I didn't say those FPSs were already released, I stated how Kinect can work in FPSs and gave example of games that will use Kinect in that way. If you don't think Kinect can work like that in FPSs, then expalin why not.

  • @MTMind2
    @MTMind2 13 років тому

    @Elbarto2208 - Well I started gaming with Pong in the late 70s, and yet I'm excited about what BOTH Move and Kinect has to offer, because what I feel many gamers on forums of ALL generations have forgotten is that gaming is actually about having fun, yes FUN. It's not about how you look to others when playing, it's not about how the controllers look, it's not about being cool, it's not about whether you have a controller/a wand/a mouse or no controller in your hand, it's about having fun. :-)

  • @dham2288
    @dham2288 13 років тому

    You do realize that since Kinect is essentially a far more advanced EyeToy, MS could easily come out with a Move-like controller in the future if they so desire and it would sell like hotcakes. Perhaps Sony can try to come out with a Kinect-like device but by then the Kinects install base would be insurmountable.

  • @MrAristocrates

    @MTMind2 I find that discussions of this nature tend to devolve when hypotheticals get involved, so I probably won't be responding to any comments after this one. Sorry, I just don't really have the energy to have this conversation. Anyway, the answer is no, but that wasn't my point. My point was that they had been looking into the technology for a long time. The 3D cams and Move prototypes are likely completely different to the finished products.

    @ghostfire1234 - And there's Kinect in Forza 4 (casual driving, Auto Vista mode, head tracking and voice recognition for UI), and Mass Effect 3 for voice recognition during dialog and gameplay (eg. commands to squad), hence the dev says only the 360 version can have voice recognition thanks to Kinect, not the PC or PS3 version. Kinect on it's own is great for casual games (and a few core titles), and Kinect+controller is ideal for core games, as seen in FZ4 and ME3 and many more to come. :)

    1) Technically, Sony had the Eyetoy on PS2, so if anyone "invented" the idea of motion controls, it's them.
    2) Did the modern drummer steal the idea of drums from the caveman who wrapped animal skins around a hollow log? You can't invent something twice, and making your own version of it is not "stealing".
    3) Video games are NOT serious business and definitely NOT something to get worked up over.

So even if GT5 was released today, it probably wouldn't have voice recognition. And this discussion was about what Kinect can do for FPSs, not whether such games happen to be out today or not. And there are MANY games that use Kinect, hence explain exactly what you're asking for in terms of Kinect games.

    @blakscull - I see you've learned some new words. Well done. ;-)
    But yes, software issues in the sense that raw data from the Kinect camera is process by software running on the 360. The faster that software can process the data, the less lag there is in the game (but there will never be zero lag, since all the current motion controllers lag, including Move). Hence Child of Eden was praised at PAX 2011 in March for being almost 1 to 1 (due to software improvements compared to last year) :-)
