  • Justin Donofrio grew up in Santa Cruz, California, where he was introduced to pottery at Cabrillo Community College. He then joined the vibrant Colorado community of artists in 2013 in the Roaring Fork Valley where he continued his clay education with the support of Anderson Ranch, The Carbondale Clay Center and The Studio for Arts and Works (SAW). He remained in Colorado to complete a B.F.A. from CSU Fort Collins in 2016. He is both internationally as well as nationally represented in galleries throughout the U.S. and abroad. Donofrio has been a Windgate Summer Scholar at the Archie Bray Foundation and resident at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. He has been an exhibiting artist and tour co-manager with the Artstream Nomadic Gallery, in addition to being selected as one of Ceramics Monthly’s 2018 Emerging Artists. He is currently pursuing his MFA in ceramics at Alfred University.
Justin is one of six artists who were chosen for similar reasons, and also for ones unique to each of them. All of them share a love of the material of clay, and an appreciation for the function of the particular objects that they create. Each of their experiences in clay is individual, but the common thread of education, from the past, present, and future, with their instructors being working artists in their field, ties them to the foundation of the Bauhaus.

The work is beautiful and the technique is innovative. I must say though that the monologue was unnecessarily long, to the extent that it was frustrating...I ended up forwarding to the points where I could see developments in the making taking place. Thank you for making this available to view.

I couldn’t hear what he was saying either. But I love his work. I’m so greedy I now wish I could own a work of his so I could just stare and look at it. It really didn’t need audio as just watching him gives expression. The kind of clay he uses I also like. Thank you so much.

Thanks for going to all the trouble of teaching and filming for all of us! I don't know if you'll ever see this - but I am puzzled regarding your choice of clay. My understanding was that procelain is risky/hard to fire: warps, dries unevenly being very sensitive to differences in thickness. Am I wrong? It seems that your finished products do have different thicknesses at times. I unfortunately found porcelain working best for me as I started re-learning the little I used to know about working with clay (also processing my own from the coast of brackish water here in DK). It has been great a few times but highly sensitive - so frustrating. Gonna try what you've taught here!!

Having grown up in Berlin and passing through "Gropius Stadt" many times always made me think that Walter Gropius together with Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, known as Le Corbusier (I lived in the Corbusier Haus in Berlin) must have been very close to insanity. But apparently there were enough idiots to finance them.
