Melina is Elden ring's poster child for the main game, and yet this mysterious pink (OKAY ITS BROWN) haired woman has remained just hat, a mystery. But I believe a key part of her story lies in our story and we're going to be delving into that in today's Elden Ring DLC Lore And Theory Speculation video, more specially how Melina Is The Tarnished's Secret Mother?! As elden ring's tarnished is a key point we will be delving into the tarnished's lore further!

Elden Ring is set in a dark fantasy world called the "Lands Between." The world was created by the Elden Ring, a powerful object that has been shattered, leading to chaos and turmoil. The elden ring outer gods lore is so amazing I'm a massive cosmic horror fan so it just ticks all the boxes I have lmao! I also love the elden ring numen lore like damn its cool! also also the elden ring land of reeds Is so cool too!
You've probably all heard of dark souls or bloodborne over the years and while there probably wont ever be a dark souls 4 or a Bloodborne 2 (As much as I want a bloodborne 2 i lose hope every day)the trilogy legacy and bloodborne will live on as a classic for a very long time!

Edit: just a couple of things! Turns out it seems I was mistaken on the Melina turning runes into strength being an isolated incident, I had remembered it being as such but apparently it isn’t, I’ll check it out tomorrow if it says in game as it’s super late today! Also apparently the regular fire monks drop the butterfly, imo I’m thinking maybe this is showing how they are technically still apart of their order, yet secretly look longingly at what their brothers and sisters have accomplished, embracing the black flame!
I did just want to say, you COULD add this onto the theory about how Melina got burnt a few weeks ago!!!!

Ranni didn't want to fully kill Godwyn. She wanted to kill his soul and her own body. She did just that.
Yeah I don't see where the confusion on that comes from. It wasn't so much about godwyn as it was she wanted to break her own tether to the two fingers.
My question is how did she know that doing the deed at the same time would have separate consequences like removing a soul from a body and killing a body but removing the soul. How?? Cause it does say "at the same time", so you have to make sure only one person dies at a time otherwise their body and soul split, so confusing

@@nemesisundead83 that's where some ppl come from theorizing that Marika told her. I believe it's something the nox knew since you find the blade there or rather it could've been a really reckless theory they put everything into.
@@nemesisundead83 i think she hand some control over what happened because of the Cursemark of Death carved in her and Godwin. they both received half of the cursemark. so probably one half was for the soul, the other half was for the body. the rest was probably proper planing and timing.

If this true, then history repeats in the Frenzied Flame ending. Just as Melina opposed her mother as the Gloam-Eyed Queen, the Tarnished opposes his mother as the Lord of Frenzied Flame.

I agree that our past as Tarnished isn't fully clear, but one certain information is that we were part of Godfrey's original army or their descendants.
Marika took away death from the whole Land Between, not only from her children: everyone can be buried next to the erdtree roots and reincarnate (At least before deathroots started to spread). The permanent death of some NPCs is probably narrative. It is also possible that the reincarnation process (or respawn, or whatever) isn't working properly for everyone because the Elden ring is shattered, so the Golden Order, the current code of the reality, is broken.
Also Ranni did not fail to kill Godwin, her purpose was to escape her fate as an Empirean of the Two fingers and the GW by killing HERSELF. Godwin's death was necessary to split the power of the Destined Death and kill Ranni's body, but not the soul, and Godwin suffered the opposite. Godwin probably wasn't even a target chosen by Ranni, she only needed the death of another demigod, and the Nox (Black Knife assassins) choose Marika's favourite child.

@@lucabuson5322 My theory is that Miquella needed a lord for his order, and this lord had to be killed and resurrected at the Divine Gates, perhaps before Radahn he tried to do this with Godwyn, but Ranni ruined the plan, because she killed Godwyn's soul, making it impossible to resurrect him.
I think you can be killed and resurrected in your own body, maybe they used Mogh's body only because he was a "healthy" demigod, while Radahn's original body is rotten, or they needed connection to the crucible that Mogh have due to his "Omen curse".
@@pupely Ok but why Miquella asked Ranni to do it since her purpose was only to half-kill herself and Godwin? Godwin can't be reseurrected beacuse he's not fully dead, It makes no sense. And with Radhan the only reason because he needed to be killed and resurrected was because he refused, there's no evidence that Godwin has ever even been asked to become Miquella's lord.
Also if the only evidence of Miquella's involved in the plot is a lily near Ranni's Rise, I repeat: there's dozens of lilys around the world... what's the point?
But Melina wasn't the only one to have this power to turn runes into strength or burn the earthtree, every tarnished had a maiden for both these purposes. ours just happen to be death already.

Also Shabriri told use we could save our maiden, and this was the reason Vyke sough out the three fingers. and we find her corps just past Festering Fingerprint Vyke in the Church of Inhibition. so i doubt Melina guided and abandon him before us. although that would be an interesting theory.
@@theemeraldgecko310 the finger maiden armor set says “The guidance of grace would ensure that the pair be brought together. Or at least, such was the promise long ago.” I can see this suggesting that it isn’t always true because your maiden is killed. it also suggests both pairs can see grace and it isn’t unique to you.
There are other tarnished that met their Maidens, Vyke being the closest to become Elden lord. You can assume the dead maiden at the church you fight him in was his own maiden and the stat requirements to wield his spear suggests he did level up atleast a few times converting runes to strength. His armor set implies he had a maiden aswell.

Messmers eye was meant to show us that Melina’s golden eye was also fake and that it was placed there by Marika to suppress her true power. Once grace is destroyed it’s released.

Remember that ALL demigods come from Marika as either the mother OR father. And the fact that the black flame monks drop Smoldering butterflies blew my fucking mind 🤯 of course I never noticed that nor do I remember seeing this on any other lore video and I watch a ton.

Slight correction. We Tarnished are Godfrey's 1st Elden Lord warriors. Godfrey was the master of Crucible Knights. When Marika divest from Godfrey and his warriors the grace Godfrey and his warriors became the 1st Tarnished. In the opening scene we hear the narrator say "Arise YE tarnished, YE dead who yet lived". So we the players play a character that followed his Chieftain Godfrey to thearch outside the lands between. What was our fate? Melina said in Marika's words that the warriors of her lord Godfrey would travel away from the lands between WAGE WARS and die. AND after that we would return to the lands between to WAGE WAR but NOW AS TARNISHED WE WAGE WAR IN THE LANDS BETWEEN. So all Tarnished are "related" to Godfrey since Godfrey treats his warriors as brothers in arms. Remember in Leyndell the original Roundtable hold in Fort Manor inside we see a table with Godfrey's weapon alongside his warriors on the table. So by Grace we are children of Marika and by following Godfrey and treat us as brother in arms we are also "related" to him. In that perspective the fight we have against Godfrey took a form of the last test or lesson our brother in arms and Chieftain has for us. Think about it.
I remember the mausoleum hypothesis. But to be honest, it sounds more like the catacombs sound/theme than the mausoleum.
Edit: also, we don’t completely kill the demigods. The DLC proves this. We killed Radahn in the base game, yet his soul is able to be acquired by Miquella and placed into Mohg’s body, whom we also killed. Godwyn’s body still exists, but his soul is gone, forever. Just like Ranni killed her body, forever, but her soul lives on.
Destined Death removes one from existence and the ability to be recycled by the Erdtree. It takes you out of the cycle, permanently.

Do you know what catacombs and mausoleums are? Imagine them sharing a similar theme. Insane. That said, you cannot ignore the steps and bells, nor the giant doors opening to light/grace just because.
Destined death is literally just ones own natural death. We see repeatedly that it is grace granted by Marika that allows for full revival (at sites of grace no less) without returning to the Erdtree/Crucible. Its what finally calls Godfrey back from death and its what calls us back every time Maliketh kills us with the sword imbued with the rune of death. Ranni's deal was that, by not killing Godwyns body or her soul, they and they alone were able to escape the clutches of Marika's grace, which was an extension of the Greater Will. Her soul retained its sense of self while Godwyn was returned to the Crucible. Both also retain the inability to die naturally as destined death is still never reintigrated with the Elden Ring.
This is also why every other tarnished makes such a big deal about only us seeing grace. They all die final deaths when killed regardless of method, their energies returned to the Erdtree.
Miquella pulling off some necromantic alchemy isnt really evidence of anything except that he is powerful and knowledgable enough to do so. His whole schtick has been aping the Golden Order, first with the Haligtree which failed and then with the Scadutree.

While there some lore details that I don’t agree with you on I think the idea of Melina being the tarnished’s mother helps portray Marika as an opposite to Melina as the latter sacrificed her children for her ambitions and gain, Melina sacrifices herself for her child the tarnished.
And that's totally good! I'd hate for it to be an echo chamber! That's a great parallel, hadn't thought of it like that!
The GEQ is Melina. There is no other option. There isn't. It either makes sense that Melina is GEQ, because she is, or it's nobody, because there are no hints it is anyone else.
or the GEQ is melinas secret halfsister that wasnt mentioned in any item, has the same traits as melina and got banished to another secret realm after her fight with maliketh

You know I never really thought of that. We the Tarnished can kill the other shardbearers without the rune of death. Or maybe we can argue that they are also regenerating, but at a much slower rate?

5:50 But the DLC proved that you can only really kill a God or Semi-God if you use the death rune, you can only kill Marika once and for all if you release the death rune, it's a requirement, Radanh only came back to life because he wasn't killed by the release of the death rune, and it is said that the soul of all beings returns to Erdtree, the only ones that do not return are those who were killed by the death rune and/or afflicted by Godwyn's death plague, so it is canonical that we didn't actually kill Rykard or Godrick, we just took their rune and their soul returned to Erdtree, just like Radanh that Miquella even uses this to force his rebirth in Mohg's body

I definitely agree that there's something weird going on with our tarnished PC, but I'm not 100% sure it's because we're Marika, or Melina's kids. There's a couple weirdly suggestive lines in item descriptions like the larval tear, and the godskin swaddling cloth that imply that somehow an unnatural or artificial being would rise to kill gods and become lord somehow. I wonder if we're a memory of Marika's being summoned over and over again like a spirit ash. Best I can come up ( that isn't just saying we're mimics or something like Renalla's kids somehow perfected.)
its more likely that were marikas child. melina was imprisoned since her “birth” until we came about judging from her outfit, blade, and where theyre found. marika has a tendency for making her kids fucking miserable and making several become people with “no renown or song” like melina and messmer. i doubt the tarnished is pre shadow, and i doubt even more that melina found the means to procreate before being brought to the erdreee’s base.
the death mechanic in elden ring is already confirmed to be grace. marika gives tarnished grace, so she may wage everlasting war to feed the erdtree and continue the birthing rituals. we see many times that graceless tarnished simply die, but graced ones do not. we even see grace itself bring us to live in the opening.
we are for certain a demigod, but you tend to reach. ranni NEVER WANTED to fully kill godwyn. her plan literally wouldve failed. her goal was to free herself, and she succeeded. also, the demigods are both very killable and very killable by eachother. has nothing to do with blackflame, that was for mortals specifically to REACH gods and kill them, not bypass some cray cray god hacks. this in evident in the fact that yknow, marika literally killed the gloam eyed queen somehow and forced her to become someone new, meaning no godflame and no tarnished were involved. at most was pure holy. the tarnished are special in our power n stuff sure, but we dont have any special powers to slay gods, more so destiny syndrome where we STEAL godly abilities/apply godly stats to more normal ones.
also, ALL maidens can make strength from runes. she literally says she PLAYING a maidens role in doing so, meaning its not an unknown power.
all in all, its stupidly more likely that the tarnished is the child of marika. its nigh impossible that the tarnished could be still living be the child of her mortal enemy when HER OWN CHILDREN get much much much worse. its even less likely that the imprisoned, non physical melina had us post shadow. theres literally just no time place we could fit into, as if we were the child of the queen we would not be tarnished firstly wed be snake guys, and two wed be soldiers and wouldve died for her.
this makes sense because we KNOW that EVERY LAST TARNISHED had grace at some point. shit is not unique to us technically. as i said before, the erdtree must be fed. it needs war, and blood. marika got rid of death for eternal war and prosperity for her gold kingdom. she made grace to make sure her OWN dont meet that same fate. once there were no more wars to be fought, she stripped all tarnished including godfrey of grace.
if the tarnished, a race/person unique to marikas order as there ARE normal men/women who arent classified as tarnished, is the gloam eyes queens child, thatd make EVERY tarnished a product of her, as wed have to be the very first. we already know that her children are EXCLUSIVELY snakes, that gloam itself/blackflame is intrinsically linked to snakes, and that the queen herself was likened and depicted as a snake by her own people and as seen in the volcano manor chapel. that alone would be enough for marika, the literal biggest snake hater alive, to kill every last tarnished she could find.
theres too much stacking against the theory than for it. timelines, relations, and prestablished lore dont add up as frankly, you tend to get a lot of stuff mixed up or wrong.
also, we know that the bell thingys have nothing to with melina. they hold the corpses of MARIKAS unknown and untold children. just like the tarnished they hold the ability to steal or copy other godly power, whilst giving it to us.

If the GEQ is Melina, Melina is a daughter of Marika, and the player Tarnished is a child of the GEQ it really ties the destiny of the Golden Order & Destined Death. Thematically it’s very intriguing.
I enjoyed roleplaying as a nameless Wretch child of Marika. Go smash cousin Godrick, Uncie Radahn, and GrandPappy Radagon.
I can redo that run with black hair and gloam eyes, Destined Death Prince build.

This is going to be accurate to my personal Tarnished Lore. I don't feel like Melina and the Tarnished are a romantic pair, but Melina's prescence gives the Tarnished the same comforting feeling as the prerscence of one's mother. Hence the flame of frenzy to burn the Erdtree and spare Melina. And the arduous journey to restore Miquella's needle of unalloyed gold.
Always love you're completely different angles you bring. Watching this, I wonder...is Melina really Merika's daughter? I'm starting to wonder maybe she's the adopted daughter of Merika and the true daughter of the Gloam Eyed Queen? Giving her the gloam eye through heredity. And maybe we are her child and that's why we were cast off in the first place. The reason Merika brings us back is because she knows the daughter of the Gloam Eyed Queen is aware of everything now and looks to destroy it all and by bringing us in as the "Elden Lord" not only does she remove the threat but we are also under her rule still. Because Merika knows the Gloam Eyed heritage is the only one who can stop her, and killing them has become too difficult especially with death a fluctuating thing, the only answer is to manipulate it all to have the gloam eyed as her own. Hence adopting Melina in the very beginning after killing her mother.

Marika didn’t take death away from her children she purged it completely from the lands between.
8:37 another slightly correction. Gloam Eyed Queen was the Goddess before Marika ascended to one. She was chosen by the greater Will and fingers fm granted the state of Empyryan. Empyryan however it means that one is chosen by the TWO FINGERS. So Ranni, Miquella amd Malenia are EMPYRYANS NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE CHILDREN OF MARIKA BUT THOSE ARE CHOSEN BY THEIR OWN 2 FINGERS RANNI STATED THAT IN HER DIALOGUE. I definitely believe melina she is the QEQ. But I dont believe she is our mother. I personally feel like as the GEQ, she got the Mesmer treatment and was basically abandoned by Marika after receiving the rune of death. Which is why she rebelled by raising an army to kill marika and possibly any of the demigods who got in her way. Im predicting that Marika saw this and gave her amnesia, took her rune of death, and gave her a false name. Then, she kept her locked in the capital tower until she would become a maiden for Marikas champion tarnished. As her grand plan of destroying Radagon and preventing the influence of the "Greater Will" from leaving the Erdtree. Incredible find with the flaming moth btw

I always asked myself why we start our journey at the chapel with a dead maiden in it. When we are an actor of the gloam eyed queen it at least makes sense that we didnt come to the lands between but were already there. And Melina just assumed we came from one of the shipwrecks because she found us at the beach (original spawn location). The link to the mausoleum and the gloam eyed queen makes at least for a beautiful story, since the queen wanted to disrupt marikas design since she realised the world needed death to avoid stagnation. It also makes for a cool revenge tale since we just mow through the people that subjugated the queen / our portential ancestor.
I’m pretty sure no one except for those who have acquired divinity can have children in Elden ring. Marika had babies, Radagon is Marika and so was able to knock up Renalla, and Rikard was able to produce the man serpents but only after he let himself be devoured by the god devouring serpent which should have acquired divinity from eating gods. There’s a royal family and other families and junk but I don’t think it says anything about actual parentage and family can be defined in different ways.
I think there probably is other people giving birth BUT saying that I do quite like this theory!

I feel like if we were her child, then we weren't given up willingly. Now we dont know exactly when or how the whole gloam eyed queen thing started, but i can fully see it being during the great march, namily cause perhaps one tarnished stole us as a baby and the gloam eye queen found this out mabye it was our wet nurse but in the end the result is the same, we were stolen and the gloam eye queen in her rage and grief blames marika and gets blasted by malakith though i highly doubt it was easy as i can imagine her pretty pissed off and basically being a blender of pure violence and rage and grief cause of her child being missing, but in the end she doesnt remember us at all, her memories of her "purpose" returns but us? Nope, but i imagine if she did survive and remember us, she would be ecstatic and also full of grief as she never got to see us grow up like at all
Maybe stretching too much but one small thing to add to your theory that we are at least a family member/reletive of that family is the fact that this game in its root IS about family. Sure it doesnt mean that we have to be a part of it, but it would help to explain why we would be at all significant. Just to keep the theme of family ascension drama.

One thing I wanna point out is how Melina’s minor erdtree spell looks older so it’s more bloomed of a tree therefore also makes u question how the current erdtree was formed
Also with it being an older tree it could suggest she’s known that spell for so long it’s growing to be its own minor erdtree
Melina’s not physically in the world therefore her tree wouldn’t grow physically if she had a minor erdtree like miquella
Really wanted to get more of Melina/GEQ and Godwyn in the DLC. Not fighting them seems like a waste even if I understand it lorewise.
About the killing. We kill by the power of time twisting smithing stones. DLC elaborated on how important smithing is to this world with the spirit burrows and the forges that imbue life with spirits. They are in stasis in stone while we use smithing stones from dragons to undo time in our enemies. And Hewg is there to see to it.
You something rhat has really bothered for sometime "with a fragment of the rune of death." A fragment, how big was this fragment, thinking about it how many assassins do we know about, i dont know to be honest but its well over 5 plus WHOEVER killed Ranni's body (yeah to this day i will never believe ranni did that to herself someone did it to her and it wasn't either of her allies) thats a lot of blades maybe that fragment was "rubbed" along each blade to give it the power of death, cause that word Fragment, really makes me wonder, was the rune of death put into a pot, mixed together and made a single batch molten metal mixed with a fragment of the rune of death to made the blades

ok i must say i stopped when you were talking about Ranni. She didn't fully kill Godwynn because she wanted to, they carved the one half of the rune of death into Godwynn and the other half into herself. This would result in Godwynns soul being killed but not his body and Rannis body being killed but not her body. If the full rune of death was carved by the knifes they would of easily fully died.
Also i don't understand how people can think Melina is the Gloam Eyed Queen. The Queen and her apostles went and hunted gods. The problem with this being is that we know of only one god in the lands of between being Marika, and they didn't kill her. Melina is most likely the little sister of Messmer and i think if the gloam eyed queen was that young and went on a hunted GODS there would be a lot more evidence in the lands between.

I didnt understand the first argument. Just like we revive, all enemies also revive/respawn. If there are characters in this game that never respawn are the demigods. So this would separate us, not join us to them.

Wrong. The tarnished in the into cutscene are dead in the badlands and resurrected by grace just like you. They have the same ability.
My only critisism is the claim Death is an important lore mechanic in every single Fromsoft game. This isnt true, they have like 2 decades of games behind them by the time Demons Souls rolled around and in many if them Death is just a gameover state.

My take is that the GOQ was the entity ruling the hornsent before Marika's usurpation. I'm pretty convinced she was the one in the intro cutscene where Marika reach into her belly to get those golden filaments. But again, that's also just a speculation.

If the flame of Frenzy is triggered in the Erdtree, then the GOQ is reincarnated in Melina, to start a new cycle, and reintroduce destined death into the world.

6 minutes in and I can’t get out of my own head about your opening argument. If we’re the child of a Demigod we cannot then be a demigod ourselves. The term for that is a “legacy” according to google. Therefore the connection you addressed with the games opening and the walking mausoleums excludes us from being Melina’s child. There’s another theory that we are a child of Marika herself and given the WM’s detail seems to make more sense.
