Feider's Texas Rig Setups for Bass | Punching vs. Pitching

  • Despite his well-earned reputation as a smallmouth master, Seth Feider relied on pitching and punching Texas rig setups to catch most of the bass that contributed to his 2021 Bassmaster Elite Series AOY win. He goes into great detail about each Texas rig setup, covering down on the rod, reel, line, hook, weight, preferred plastics, and most importantly, why he chooses each.
Most bass anglers would choose a Texas rig setup in some form or fashion as the most versatile presentation when targeting bass around cover. Yet, there are distinct differences between punching, which focuses on the heaviest cover, and pitching, which Feider employs on longer casts and around sparser cover.
PUNCHING TEXAS RIG SETUP (retail links)
    • ROD - Daiwa Rebellion Casting Rod, 7'9" Heavy: wired2.fish/3S...
    • REEL - Daiwa Tatula Elite Flip-Pitch Casting Reel, 7.1:1: wired2.fish/3C...
    • LINE - Sufix 131 Braided Line, 40- to 50-pound: wired2.fish/3J...
    • HOOK - VMC Ike Approved Heavy Duty Flipping Hook, 3/0 - 5/0: wired2.fish/31...
    • WEIGHT - VMC Flipping Weight, 1 ounce and greater: wired2.fish/3S...
    • PEG - VMC Sinker Stops: wired2.fish/3K...
PITCHING TEXAS RIG SETUP (retail links)
    • ROD - Daiwa Kage Rod, 7'3" Medium Heavy: wired2.fish/3v...
    • REEL - Daiwa Zillion SV TW Casting Reel, 8.5:1: wired2.fish/3C...
    • LINE (braided mainline) - Sufix 131 Braided, 30-pound: wired2.fish/3J...
    • LINE (fluorocarbon leader) - Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon, 20-pound: wired2.fish/3z...
    • HOOK - VMC Ringed Wide Gap Hook, 4/0: wired2.fish/3z...
    • WEIGHT - VMC Flippin Weight, 3/16- to 3/4-ounce: wired2.fish/3S...
    • PEG - VMC Sinker Stops: wired2.fish/3K...
Feider uses a Texas rig punching setup when a heavy 1-ounce plus flipping weight is needed to get the bait through the cover. He ties on a beefy straight-shank flipping hook (3/0- to 5/0) with the tried and true Palomar knot - a straight shank flipping hook performs better than an offset EWG when hook set angles are more vertical. A longer heavy-power rod with a fast reel in the 7.1 gear ratio range delivers adequate speed and torque for winching bass from the cover. Depending on the flipping weight, he uses a heavy 40 or 50-pound straight braid. This setup involves making account pitches, penetrating heavy cover, and extracting bass fast before they wrap you up.
    TACKLE USED (retail links)
    BAITS
    • TUBE - Big Bite Baits 4" Craw Tube: wired2.fish/3J...
    • CREATURE - Z-Man Palmetto BugZ: wired2.fish/3A...
He quickly pivots to his flipping setup (actually pitching) when the cover thins, such as around docks and submerged grass. For this, a shorter rod, medium-heavy power rod around the 7-foot range paired with a fast reel (8.1:1 or faster) makes for effortless all-day pitching. Feider grabs the pitching Texas rig setup when a 3/16- to 3/4-ounce tungsten weight is enough to penetrate the cover. He prefers a ringed extreme wide gap (EWG) hook for all non-punching applications, as he experiences better hookup and landing percentages. He also transitions from a braided mainline to a braid-to-fluorocarbon leader, especially in clear water.
He stresses the importance of using a smooth and quiet braid in both instances. These attributes deliver effortless deployment of the Texas rig setups off the reel and a quieter presence when the line is in contact with the cover.

Encyclopedic knowledge. Even just watching his technique, from the different spots he chooses for his casts to how he weighs some of those tube bites before setting into them, is just so informative. And he makes it look so everyday to bang out those bites one after another. Great stuff, thanks Seth and W2F!

Hell I take the ones like that and throw it in a ziplock bag with 2-3 of the baits I’m using. To as all the old timers use to say “SEASON” them. Just like if you get one extra slimy they would put a bag on the tail and zip the bag up and slide it off not stripping all the slime off but some of it. And throw a few worms in it. Just like the first fish whoever was in the boat would rub there worms on side the fish. And it works 99% of the time. They said it puts that fish’s sent on it and the other fish will think another fish is after it. Maybe even hurt it so they are going to attack it and eat it.

Been thinking about getting the elite P/F. I mainly use Shimano and Lews reels and then I bought a Zillion and was absolutely blown away by how smooth it is.
Last month (7/2022) I bought 2 Lews custom lite reels… Garbage. And I know Lews has new fancy reels coming out, I can promise you that I’m done wasting money on Lews reels.

Thanks Seth. No nonsense approach, I like it. I also use tubes alot but my approach is different and for not as heavy cover. I stuff a 1/8oz weight (bass casting sinker) and run my hook thru the tie point of the weight. The tube has a glide that works.

I live in Florida, fish from shore and have a minimum 3 flipping setups in the winter.
    Those a
Same rods double as frog rods and swimming worm setups.
But i must have 1 devils horse rod
And 1 mh 7ft spinning setup. Then im good for the entire spawn/ winter
If i fish phosphate pits then I'll also need a 6'6" mh skipping setup.

I’ve watched a couple thousand videos and tried a couple hundred things these “big guys” do on these lakes but none of that works here on the New River in VA.. these smallies here are on a different level! I wish one time I could rent one of these guys out to show me how it’s done here… the past couple
Years I’ve been on senkos specifically the yellow tail senkos from Gary Yamamoto and these translucent random worms with blue and silver flecks that I found at a yard sale and they tear up these smallies. I can’t get bites on jigs here at all! I also can’t find any more of these random worms I use.. I think someone made them.. I want some more like them because they flat work!

I’m up here in CT. I flip a lot and even use a jig a ton but watching how theses guys flip just doesn’t seem to work here. I can’t seem to get bites on those flipping baits nor where they position. Now flipping a jig into cover in my areas with a jig that I make works great and I can come up with some giants. I asked a pro what I’m doing wrong why can’t I fish the way the southern guy’s do. He said your doing nothing wrong. The bait is different and the surrounding is different. Bass position themselves different because of this and you are dialed in. Sounds like you have a similar situation.
