I remember these beautiful beasts. Got a picture of my late beloved Father holding me, 1yr. old in 1947 in front of a Southern Pacific Steam Locomotive. R.I.P. Beloved Dad.
Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed this! Even the automobiles are now antiques which added to my enjoyment. I suppose the young man with the wooded train whistle is 48 years old now but he has memories he will cherish for years to come.
50.. Still Love it. lol Went to see her up in Portland a few years ago. Got my first ride behind the 4449. We were chasing trains all the time back then.
My brother shot it, wish it was a bit more steady..lol I got to ride behind her about 5 years ago. Made a special trip to Oregon just to see her again. But yea, being a little rail fan at the time was cool:)
I lost my father on that day, a car hit him while walking at night 2 miles from our house. And this year I lost my mom on June 14 in the hospital, her lungs gave out.
I got to watch them pull her out of Oaks Park for the freedom train refurbish in '74. I actually have a pic of me in front of her at the Hoyt Street roundhouse on her first steam.

Sam Dickenson yea I think your on the right track... as a kid I was like "oh no!" But it turns out that's pretty normal for steamers. They definitely were not designed for steamers. I did love hearing that though, it was quite exciting at the time. lol
It was on the Southern Pacific Mulford/Coast Line. The Mulford line ("Baby Coast") runs from Oakland to San Jose before transitioning to the Coast Line.. The rest of the action is between San Jose and San Luis Obispo.

Always love finding vintage footage of the 4449. Thanks for posting this.
It's also great to see the cars, clothes and technology of the era too. I was in the Navy at the time of this video.
Yea, I really wanted to share this!
Most of the daylight cars are stranded on the closed down NWP and will likely sit where they are for the rest of their days...
This video really captures how fast these big beautiful beasts can go!
Man everyone wanted to see the 4449!

Wonderful footage, it was such a treat to see a big steam locomotive running at speed without a diesel backup.
This entire chase reminds me of when me and some friends chased Soo Line 1003 this past fall.
Actual footage? This is amazing!
Nicely done! Great vintage footage of the 4449!

I was six when this was filmed. The Amtrak brought back some memories. Thanks for sharing.
I was 7 LOL
Really good video for the time. Rode behind this locomotive many times at speed. Miss those days.

Oh wow.. how cool. I just went to see her at Oaks Park last year and took a ride on the Holiday Express..
How much did that ride cost? I've been thinking about doing one.
It was under $20 not including my flight there;)
I was in San Jose in '86 and say this train headed to LA I think for a movie. Pretty cool.
Sounds like the whistle from the 844
That same Whistle ended up getting installed onto 4449's Stablemate the SPandS 700 after that was restored
4449 has had a ton of whistles
@@clintgates7526 That may or may not have been because the whistle on the 4449 at that time WAS the 700's whistle.
4:06 Awesome
I have a stainless steel Southern pacific railroad spike 4449 passed over it back 1946
Sp 4449 blows it's SP 6 chime whistle
Where? I only heard the 3 chime but not the 6 chime. So where was the 6 chime used?
I LOVE 4449!!

3-8-1986 sure is a weird wheel arrangement for a locomotive
fuck it was the date
Great video! I wonder what the drumhead says?
Kinda sounds like 611s 2015 whistle.

Why didn't they stop for the hotbox detector? Was it because they knew it was a result of steam from the cylinder or something else?

It’s the firebox setting it off. Not an overhearing bearing.
Okay so they're all waiting for the Southern Pacific 4449 and the track and pretty hot
Can you tell us more about the day and trip? Seems like a great group of friends.

Back when America was America and California hadn't become a cesspool.

Yes
