What a great tutor you are, I save many of your videos for cold, wet days here in Scotland, then sit back with a lovely hot cuppa and 8 little rescue babes like Teddy x and learn some more, thank you so very much for your giving spirit.

Getting ready for spring up there. We’re just coming to the end of a bit of a horror summer down here in Australia. Have a nice gentle season John and team!

Love it John. Rather ironic that you thought January was miserable. You had no idea what was waiting around the corner eh. But it gave you plenty of time to sort out your BEAUTIFUL garden beds. Thank you for sharing like you do. You are a star.

This really helped me with my titchy garden. Years ago I boug the figs twisted round each other. I moved it like an eget, it's took off like a Hazel twig on 🔥 heat. Getting loads of figs I think they are turkey figs but it's taken over

Just come in from doing exactly the same in my own garden John. It's a dull and grisly day here too (Northants). Happy gardening.

Just doing the same here in our garden.. but we are very wet ... the soil is very soggy at the moment I am trying to not walk on it ... we live on clay and I don't need or want to go walking on it and compacting it ... there are signs of the garden awakening but only just .. love your videos ... from Essex England ... thank you ...

I love how you're using a rake to cut down on the effort to remove the dried stuff.
I like to wait until spring to do mine. I started doing that because I discovered all the ladybugs were hibernating in the leaf and bark chips that were there. The downside is that it looks messy all winter. I planted evergreens for winter interest and I find my eyes now focus on them instead of the 'mess'.

I cut everything to the ground in the Fall after the frost and rake up any fallen leaves to spare me this kind of early spring clean up. In late winter, early spring- its tedious and hard to see the stuff amongst the dried debris that you dont want to damage; and the weather around here this time of year is truly miserable to boot. Then there are the new buds pushing up through the soil from the crowns that you don't want to damage and shred with a rake. Fall clean up means a tidy garden free of dead stuff rotting under the snow, over-wintering insects eggs and mildew spores. A little light raking in spring to clear off the few leaves and pine needles that blew in over winter and I'm good to go. I can get my beds top dressed with clean compost and mulched earlier meaning the rest of the spring growing season is more about relaxing and enjoying the garden than cleaning up the mess of last night's raucous party. Division and relocation is easier if tagged in Fall. With the cleared beds you can see to start digging earlier in spring, as soon as the ground can be worked, without wasting time clearing out last years growth first. Stake and tag plants to be moved next spring with tags noting where things are moving. Stake and mark with mason's string where divisions that need to happen to control spread are outlined and dig them out as soon as the ground can be worked next spring. The remaining clumps and crowns will have lots of time to recover before putting on their show. Early bloomers of course get divided in the fall.
