I’m 18, just bought my first bike, 1982 xj650 maxim. I get my motorcycle endorsement next month, im gonna tear it apart and rebuild it piece by piece for peace of mind. These videos are already helping sooooo much, the xj community is very helpful but it’s just different watching someone else go through the process.
Thats great to hear! It's been a journey of learning for me, but really satisfying. Make sure you pick up a workshop manual for all of the various specs etc. My other main tip would be to really go nuts on cleaning the carbs. They can be real gremlins. If you want to see someone who really knows their stuff work on an XJ, check out this playlist from Mezzmo Engineering (I've found it super helpful): ua-cam.com/video/Ar-wsiryUPQ/v-deo.html
Hey mate, just bought an 83 xj650 maxim and just so happened to stumble across your videos! I'm from wanganui and am about to tackle this awesome project of a bike. But I'll have to get it re complied as the rego lapsed 23 years ago! Cheers mate!
Oh, I remember now that some of the early XJ650s had soft cam sprockets. I suppose a chain and sprocket swap would cure that. Back in the day, some swapped in XJ750 or even XJ900 cams to hot rod them.
The Hitachi HSC32 carbys were defined as "some of the most accurate and refined" but that was in 1982. eBay seller 'Damineding' sells nice Taiwanese kits for the carbys that have the impossible-to-find "main nozzles" which wear out and suffer from pitting. I advise all to gently clean and liberally ArmorAll the slide diaphragms. Keeps them soft and pliable.
hi friend, just came across ur channel, u obviously put a lot of work into ur videos, and its a shame u dont have more of a following. i just recently rebuilt an XJ bike, as much as it sucks to have to tear down the engine, it is nice to have that peace of mind that everythign is new. my bike had 39K before i tore it down. as for the mixture screws, the Gunsen tuner is... good but i often find it difficult to get right. read the spark plugs, if black, lean out the screw, if clean, richen it. ull go through a few plugs but they are nickel, like 3 bucks a plug
Hey there! Thanks for watching. Yes, I feel your pain! My latest video has an update on how things have progressed a bit, but I'm having the same issues. I'm hoping more carb cleaning and a good sync will help. Let me know if you manage to figure out your issues. We might be fighting the same fight!

There is a second chain that powers the alternator (the round thing under the carbs), it has a tensioner that fails.
ua-cam.com/video/YnCTuwvB5sY/v-deo.html It seems its the spray nozzle.
