I drive an XF automatic normally. Tomorrow I'm being trusted with a CF manual, 16 speed. Haven't needed to use the splitter before but now I know that I just have to use the clutch to engage the split gear, not take it out and put it back in gear with the splitter on. Thanks for this vid, I hope it helps me on the road!
Thx for good video. Some years ago I had joy to drive a DAF with same gear. Began career with Mercedes NG witt one-H without Split, then double-H without Split, then double-H splitted and so on … wish you and all our camerades all time good trip
yes Paccar engines ,but the transmission is ZF ?the picture in the video with the eaton 18s was in my instruction book of my daf ,it is a mistake ,,it is nearly the same just that we dont have the 2crawler with the zf have a good week Pat
Have a good Day! Please, tell about how do you shift one full gear down before overtaking? Just off the gas - clutch in - shift gear - clutch out and at the same time add gas? No any blipping the throttle and other features?
Quick question: At around 3:15 when you are downshifting, are you keeping the clutch depressed all the time or are you letting it up between every shift?
is your father still drive? how old is he? It's almost like mine family- my grandfather was driver too,my father is,but i only not yet...i have license for trucks, have try it,but somehow i dont like it - situation in Latvian truck driving...
the cab yts not high.........,but u r verry higt dryverrrrrr.........thumbs UP......for Patt....,u r really my mentor......,y wanth to dryve like u....,greattings from Romania!!!
Interesting, Pat. Thanks! I only ever had very simple Eaton-Fuller 10-speeds (high-low ranges, one overdrive gear, no splits). I wanted more gears--more gears, more fun. Safe trip / Marc
Brilliant video Patrik.. I had the some ZF Gear BOX in my old MAN TGA... Its very easy to use and works good.. Not so many split greas like in the 12 speed like I have.. THX you for this great video responce.. Wish you all the best for 2013... Keep on trucking and Keep on filming!!
yes Al ,i dont know if you have seen it ,but the pic at 00:33 was a mistake ,i have copy it from the instruction book of my Daf,but it is from a Fuller 18s....i didnt know that it was still possible to buy a daf with a fuller gearbox happy new year thx for the comment
Very liked this video Patrick, I used to drive my fathers truck in summer, his truck has little bit different transsmission, but anyway person just have to get used to it, to practise for some time, then it will be easy to drive any truck. have a nice evening my friend, Simas
Hi Patrick I hope you have a very happy and prosperous New Year ... very interesting to learn more about the Transmissions of European trucks .... never driven a truck and Europe but I can see that these changes are very smooth .. I see none nesesario rpm engine speed to reduce gear changes .. thank you very much for sharing these fabulous and interesting videos dear friend .. My best wishes to you and your family in this new year .. Greetings friend
some prefers the auto boxes ,it is true that it is great in the traffic jam,but for the normal drive and driving with the feeling ,the manual transmission is better.....but we are in 2013 and i think that my next truck will be with an autobox....in my company they test the new mercedes actros and the new daf 460 ,both of them with automatic have a good weekend Marc
If I understand you, you pick a gear either high or low or split to maintain the proper RPM range for your transmission & engine combo? Tach should always read in the green band for good torque and horsepower?
exactly.....but i must say that i do it like this, without thinking , With my euro 6 i have not the same torque and the engines runs lower than with the euro 5 it is not exactly the same
I drive a DAF XF with the 4 0ver 4 with the half gear .I test driving a Volvo i shift .Its the way to go .The driver can focus on traffic and forget the gear stick .Its a distraction all the gear changes .You never notice until you drive something else .
hi Andrzej i do loaded 1L 3L 4L 5L 6L 6H.....etc and empty 2H 4H 5H 6H 7H 8 L 8H.....You know i have a 410 ,at 44tons you need a lot speed.....i know that you can have the ZF16S,the Fuller 18s and the autobox 12s of Daf for the the highest reverse gear ,yes i use it often when i unload the train in the factory, there i must do some long reverse if i dont want to each time "u turn"...fast hé....with the trailer you dont have to miss the backing HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND p
Paul Jonkers haha....a strange noise and not many difference of power with the 410....need more torque....but for my boss the diesel comsumption is better with this one,i win 3 litre for 100km with this one
Do any of DAF's at your company have 12 speed box's? because I know you can get them in DAF now as well, and were you loaded? I always found gear's on DAF a bit short so I would usually start with 3L and go straight to 4H, or from 3H to 5L and then select gear by gear without using the splitter as far the last gear but the load weight's wouldnt be great;) and have you ever tried to reverse with the highest Reverse gear on?I've tried once in a Volvo rigid which was 8 speed, mad stuff:D
I haven't used my left leg for some time now Pat. Many thanks for the training video......lol Wishing you and all the family a happy and prosperous new year. Andy........
D. G. This transmission is synchronized, so you use the clutch like in a passenger car, double clutching is for un-synchronized transmissions, like the American Eaton Fuller Road Rangers, though experienced drivers (like myself) float (shift without the clutch)
it is nearly the same like a scania the last truck of my father was a scania r500 with manual gearbox i have try it ...what i can say is that gearbox of the scania was harder for shifting the gear, not worst to use but you need to use more power with your arm to shift the gear thanks for your comment

@@MerlynAStern As an european I'm curious to know what's the total mass of the truck + trailer fully loaded. I've seen on TV some time last year that you can buy now a DAF with 12 speed manual ZF;) I don't know how popular these box's are, the reversing on the high gear I did was almost seven years ago:D with deliveries to Tesco's now it would be a suicide:D
Hi Patrick, Just I can drive the DAF lolo Thank´s for the Instruction to drive, nice video!!! Just I wish You and Your family all the best for the Year 2013 Bernhard&family
i dont know...maybe because it is more easy to use...here in europe for the moment it is the auto boxes for original and the manual for option...nearly 75% of the new trucks are now with autoboxes have a good weekend P
I come for shifter layout in my ETS 2. just want to know where is correct position of neutral for zf boxes. is it the same as an eaton which is between gear 1 and 2 or it's 3 and 4?
@@7784Patrick Thanks, just too be clear so if you just push the shifter forward or back you won't go into any gears? it's either push to the left for 1 and 2 or right for 3 and 4? I'm also curious about the ZF 8 and 9 speed so as the volvo 12 speed, scs forum picture for ets2 is not that accurate because they all have N position between 1 and 2 which you only need to push forward or back for those two positions.........
CreRay hi yes sometime, like this week i had worked internal work in a factory....i have a lot of space but to not do a lot of U turns for nothing i drive backward to the weightbridge....but it is for the fun ,you know, i dont have to...but when you do 35 time the same trip in week you finish to play with it...-))
someone have started with auto boxes in usa also, i dont remember whic manufactor. but they call it auto-shift :) they still got some way to go, to make them alot better, our autoboxes choose the gears very intelligent after the conditions we have. To see how they make the autoboxes and the development will be interresting :) what i dont understand is american trucks have a distinct whining in the cabin, tha auto-shift had it even it wasnt a automatic, a special sound :)
Thanks Pat, very interesting. I need something like that in my office for my breaks. Chilling & shifting, hehe... - Happy New Year to all viewers, followers, subscribers etc...- Best wishes for a wonderful twenty13. :-) - Andy

I will watch the video in a moment, but that shift pattern looks like our standard 18 speed that I am very familiar with. Driven lots of them. You can split all low range gears and all the top 4 high range gears. We shift without using the clutch and if you are a 43 year veteran like me you shift with two fingers just like butter. Romain Pereira ben oui
c est comme ça qu il faut l employer.....mais tu sais ça devient de plus en plus rare les boites manu......d ici 5 ans il y aura des chauffeurs qui n auront rien connu d autres qu une boite auto
Et bientôt plus besoin de chauffeur!
Damn auto trucks! Great Manual gearboxes, even with synchromesh.
Nice video Patrick, good explanation . Thnaks and happy new year!
THANK YOU Sebastian
happy 2013 to you and your family

When you change split from low to high, do you need to press clutch ? Same question for low and high range...
yes to change....but you can prepare it before it only change of gear when you press on the clutch
ah yes Jonathan, with this one ,it is just like a car, just a little bit more speeds
thanks for your comment, glad that you have liked it
have a very good new year

VERY EASY TO EXPLAIN. THANK YOU. THUMBS UP.
Buying a DAF with an Eaton gearbox is like buying a new laptop and hooking up a typewriter to it
say it to my boss
Excuse me, but I know that Daf uses ZF 16 speed gearboxes....... EATON was a long time ago..
Good job have learn many things from you from tanzania
+mudy Ali thank you Ali...-)
Great deal of help. Thanks man.
thanks
Thank you Andy
it is very easy to use and you need not so much power to use with your arm to change the gears on the 105,on the 85 and 95 it is more hard, like a Scania,(my father had a r500 for his last truck ,i have try it ,it was much more hard than my daf)
a video like this gives a lot of work with the titles and the effects,haha.....i had a lot of fun to make it
keep on trucking and filming as well Andy
thanks for the wishes ...the same for you

good 2013 to you

Tnx Pat for this video,it was really helpfull...
Hey i have Q.
Is possible to go example :7h-8h or you first need 7h-8l-8h?
Tnx
no problem....it is up to you...you must feel how it s better....it is manual, you have to find your self the best gear,it depends how is the %of the hill, how you are loaded, how fast you are......if you start with truck and.if the road go down you can forget some gears,if the road climb you must use more

In my Renault G260 I used the 7h-8l-8h at high speeds (which makes it effectively 14-15-16 sequence), 'cos the box is, crawlers included, an 18-speed box. The top gear was thus actually 18th. Top speed 115-120 km/h, depending on gross weight. Truck was heavy 'cos the cargo room was insulated against the worst freezing conditions.
How do you operate the engine brake?
i had the eaton fuller on my 2800 in the past...i have enjoyed this transmission

yes ,all is possible,it depends of the weight that you have,it the road is going up and you are heavy ,it is ok like this
I've seen on TV some time last year that you can buy now a DAF with 12 speed manual ZF;) I don't know how popular these box's are, the reversing on the high gear I did was almost seven years ago:D with deliveries to Tesco's now it would be a suicide:D
Hi Patrick,
Just I can drive the DAF lolo
Thank´s for the Instruction to drive, nice video!!!
Just I wish You and Your family all the best for the Year 2013
Bernhard&family
Happy new Year Patrick!!!
7H is lower gear than 8L?Thanks for the video very useful!Gretings from Greece!
yes i do like this
i dont know...maybe because it is more easy to use...here in europe for the moment it is the auto boxes for original and the manual for option...nearly 75% of the new trucks are now with autoboxes
have a good weekend
P
I come for shifter layout in my ETS 2. just want to know where is correct position of neutral for zf boxes. is it the same as an eaton which is between gear 1 and 2 or it's 3 and 4?
a cross.....just un the middle of 1234
@@7784Patrick Thanks, just too be clear so if you just push the shifter forward or back you won't go into any gears? it's either push to the left for 1 and 2 or right for 3 and 4? I'm also curious about the ZF 8 and 9 speed so as the volvo 12 speed, scs forum picture for ets2 is not that accurate because they all have N position between 1 and 2 which you only need to push forward or back for those two positions.........
You the best teacher man
Does it go clutchless like on US big rigs or Scania?
Scania doesn't go clutchless... It can, but it's not good for the gearbox. Same goes for this ZF as well.
Hi, can you tell me if in the 95 xf and cf ,its the same thing?
Thnks
the video was with a 105......tes the 95 and 85 are the same just the sdift stick who is not at the same place
THANKS FOR THE COMMMENT
have a good week

7784Patrick
Ah I see... thanks Patrick
at 0:33, is an eaton fuller 18speed transmission
yes,thanks. nice videos
happy 2013
thank you
happy 2013
someone have started with auto boxes in usa also, i dont remember whic manufactor. but they call it auto-shift :) they still got some way to go, to make them alot better, our autoboxes choose the gears very intelligent after the conditions we have. To see how they make the autoboxes and the development will be interresting :) what i dont understand is american trucks have a distinct whining in the cabin, tha auto-shift had it even it wasnt a automatic, a special sound :)
Good video, all is clear. Thank you good luck!
Pat,
Eaton is an American gearbox & is non-synchromesh, why do European trucks have full synchromesh transmissions?
Don California, USA
because we know how to build gearboxes
thanks for the comment
happy 2013
thank you Tony
happy new year
