- I've been asked to demonstrate how to use the splitter on the Volvo FM13. I show you up hill & down hill split changes & block changes.
Hopefully someone out there will find it useful &/or interesting.
Much Love.

Very interest and informative video, I took my class 1 and 2 in a day with a 16 speed range change and splitter, was an experience driving that the first time! New subscriber from the Scottish Highlands
I learned in a 4 over 4 then drove the same with a splitter (16 speed) in most of my jobs. I've driven them Volvos Deadys driving, they're one of the easiest gearboxes to get round. But the Eaton twin-splitters (12 speed) were the real challenge, you would find these mostly on ERFs, Fodens and Seddon-Atkinsons although i once had a Daf with one. A real fcuker of a gearbox but once you got used to em you won't wanna go back. These drivers nowadays don't know what they're missing, what with all these autos in modern day wagons. All you old-school drivers will know exactly what i'm talking about.
Pointless going back. Everything in life is easier.
Did you prefer walking around your front room waving an aerial about trying to get a signal for one of the 3 channels on your box? Or is Sky better? Come on.
I never once said we should go back did i? I was only reminiscing about how wagons used to be as those were the kind i was introduced to. Yep things have changed now and it's all good. TV aerials are better now too!
@@Richard.Cameron what do you think about downshifting 4 over 4? I mean, how did you act after pressing clutch and moving gear lever in lower gear: release clutch and press gas at the same time? Or you blip the throttle like a rev matching car technique?
@@АлександрКоловрат-и1н on a modern day gearbox like the one in this video, i would just do it like you would with a straight 6 speed syncromesh box on a rigid or a car to be honest. They are that simple to use. Whereas in the old days, you would bring your speed right down and hold the gear lever in neutral briefly (clutch down) while giving the engine a short sharp rev. This is to open what's known as 'the gate' to the lower gear, then proceed with the change as normal. You can repeat this when up-changing too, particularly if there is a gear that is stubborn to engage.
@@Richard.Cameron you do not understand me at all. I asked, what will you do AFTER selecting lower gear: just sloowly release clutch? Or firstly blip the gas and after that release clutch?
Thank you for taking the time to show us this Deady hows the Daf performing now and until the next vlog buddy take care of yourselves and all of you keep safe and well buddy
Deady awesome video and thanks for simplifing the shifting process on the Volvo manual gearbox this was very interisting and helpful to me
Hey. I am not great with a 13 speed manual but I am more use to a 10 speed manual, 15 speed, 18 speed and 12 speed but great video as always
Never drove a truck fully understand, thank you
Great Video Deady and good to see you back..Take care and stay safe...
Absolutely amazing video, I only passed my driving test in 2919, been a taxi driver for 2.5/3 years, and love driving (manual) I’d love to do my HGV, but no funding for my age (41). This video is great, but reminds me of how shit I am at Maths (overthinking) watching this video, my brain is thinking, what gear for slowing down, do I flick to low etc 🤯😰.
I remember driving a truck with a two speed rear axle ,not too many able to drive a manual gear box now
There’s not many as most learn in auto tractor units these days. I think it should mandatory to learn in a manual split shift.
😂😂 my dad was a HGV driver, after he retired he kept his hand in with a bit of agency work.
Got a call one day for a job, dad turns up and the guy asked if could drive a splitter box as the last two the agency sent couldn't.
He also had a PSV class one. Passed in the 70s on a proper bus route master type.
im learning, this is daunting. Help!
Where did you get the t-shirt from geezer. Quality
It's a company called forcewear mate check them out on Facebook veteran owned and ran :)
@@alantowle3892 sound mate veteran myself so will definitely check them out
@@joebrooks9495 same pal my draws are full of shirts and hoodies from here haha
I 💕 your teaching I need learn more.
You are so good my brother am enjoying good video
I need you to explain more on the splitter. When can it be applied? Does it work in an ON and OFF pattern?
Splitter can be used at anytime..
Gear two splitter stays in low position and range selector in down position
Gear three: stays same as previous gear as you are in it.
However moving to gear four
Gear four: range selector at the front of stick is flicked up as you double clutch into fourth from third.
Then you can flick the switch on the side of the stick up to four high after your quick clutch… and you can hear the change.
Fourth to fifth: range selector stays up, but splitter switch on the side flick down then shift to fifth.
Fifth to sixth: range selector stays up and splitter switch goes up for five high.. hear the shift in sound..
Then flick the switch down once you hear you’re in five high ready for sixth gear
The splitter switch up for cruising gear or known as six high
If the truck is empty you can drive it normally. So example 2nd gear to 3rd then range selector up, then 4th, 5th, 6th
Splitter is good for loaded to reduce wear on drivetrain
Very informative for new drivers
good of you 👍👍
More working time directive videos would be good mate just passed my class 2 waiting for my license in the post ...thanks deady
Love the video and love you are rocking the forceswear t-shirts.
nice video, really helpful, please can you also guide for the truck with load , at what change gears ?
Getting close to 11k subs. Keep it going :)
Please can you tell me properly regarding the shift. Shift only comes in when want to to high gear from 5th gear on ward, please correct me
saw you today young man thursday 28th you were on the M53 towards Ellesmere port at J12 at about 17.30 gave you a flash and a wave but you never saw me 😂😂😂
Thanks so much for the pointers, pal. I just bought a new Volvo splitter and I haven't driven a split box since I was in high school. Does it say what gear you're in? What is best practice for engine braking, do you split gears or just drop it down in low split? Hope you're well, hi from NZ
That was me waking you up in the fuel tanker at ellesmere port👍👍i see the downhill daf lives to see another day!!
This is right hand side stearing, so I can't understand that where you drive this truck ?
Can you do a video on your full pre drive checks what you look for and what ur thinking as u go through it please?? Do you have to fill out paper work each morning like a pre drive checklist ??
The paperwork is as of equal importance to the checks carried out. You may not think you're responsible for maintenance but what you do, as a driver is key to road safety & the protection of your licence & the company's operator's licence. If you can't evidence that you have done your checks, in the view of the DVSA you haven't done them. Equally, if you work for a responsible operator if when the vehicle gets pulled in for its PMI and they find faults that should have been detected by the driver, you ought to be in for a right royal rollicking! Each operator will have their own forms/ procedures but if you have a look at the DVSA website this will give you some insight. www.gov.uk/government/publications/guide-to-maintaining-roadworthiness
I’m just wondering how it is in the UK I’m a driver in Ireland it would make a good video
Did you use the clutch when splitting?
Yes it doesn't split otherwise
Get rid of that beard Deady lad! Good Grief 🤦🏼♂️
Might be a stupid question but I’m well confused, does 13 speed mean 13 gears and if so how does it have 13 gears when it only has 6 gears on the gear stick, and if each gear has half a gear wouldn’t that make 9 gears in total, and what does the C stand for. If I sound stupid I’m sorry but I’m not clued up at all haha, cheers
luke watch the video again all your questions are coverd in it
C is crawler
It has 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th. All 6 can be split = 12 gears. Then crawler. 13.
Deady 2012 nice one for that mate
Deady who told you to double clutch your Volvo? You don't double clutch with a synchromesh box like you get on Volvo's and Scania's as I was always told you'll end up breaking the selector fork in the gear box or doing some major damage, that came from my dad who had four Scania 111's once then four ERF's with twin splitter crash boxes but he learnt to drive on old ace's and Scammels
YEAH just match the revs, and when your splitting just take your foot of the gas and back on and that splits it for you, no clutch needed
betty swollocks the quickest way to change gear in a twin splitter box is to pull it out of gear then stick it straight back in,tried tested over 23yrs of driving
@@James48535 got go disagree with you there mate
betty swollocks disagree all you like but I know I am right cause it's how I used to use/drive a truck with a twin splitter box and I could change gear quicker than any one else up hill or down hill on the flat and pulling away at lights
betty swollocks like I said it was tried and tested and successful as I drove a truck with a twin spitter box for 12yrs,I learnt to drive in one
Currently driving that beast..
So can I split while am on low range gears?
I remember my scania had upper and lower gears but didn't have splitter switch on the side or I missed something?
Excuse me, how do you shift downhill?
From Zambia
How long did it take you to master that? It looks like a nightmare to wrap your brain around.
How do you keep track of what gear you're in?
Nice, Zambia.
Very good if you can show us the use of "c"thanks in advance
Good for all new drivers passing in automatic
I’m so glad of auto trucks
Sorry, what if I am on horizontal road and loaded, can I switch from 3Hi to 4Hi? Or it will be stressfull for engine, and usually you start high range only from 4 low?
Another great video mate #thumbsup 👍
Great video there mate
Thank you for video
What's the use of that button near the hand brake
I have a question.let say you are in 12'th speed and you must stop let say very fast is mandatory to shift down gear one by one?i have impresion that i l delay a lot to stop the truck
You put it back into second or whatever gear you think is the right one, just like any other vehicle
Thanks man. That helped me alot
Good explanation bro
Well done mate that is old fashioned driving not automatic just think in a few years we will look like dinosaurs the young ones will be saying what the bloody hell is this stick here in the middle of the camp what do I do with it credit to you mate tops and I do drive a Scania 03 reg same selective gears
آموزش خوبی بودیه چیزائی متوجه شدم ایکاش زیرنویس بازبان فارسی هم داشت.thanks
Very good and helpful
Nice vid mate
Thanks for all your videos they have been a great help to me , ive been a sub for a while to your channel,
I past my class 2 & 1 within 6 weeks of each 2019 developed a shoulder injury which meant i couldnt leave my job ( Taxi Driver of 20yrs) until I had the op ive now had the operation and ive done a couple of local jobs in a class 1 . My question is im 55 yrs old and im hurting all over i didnt realize how unfit i was does it get better with time, I`m thinking a new start at my time of life is nuts and im doubting myself a hell of a lot im a fish out of water and totaly out of my comfort zone other drivers have been great telling me the reversing will come with time but i dont no if it will even putting the air lines on and off is nuts ive been spoilt sitting in my cab for 20 years > So question does it get better should i carry on trying
I see drivers that do there job like its nothing yet im struggling badly even the taco is a nightmare i think reversing into bays and taco card learning should be part of the course requirements yes I passed but ive a lot to learn and i think some of that learning should be in with the practical side of driving Sorry to be going on like on old fart , Again enjoy your vlogs keep it up mate you inspire me
Yeah it does get better mate. The tacho becomes second nature. And reversing... it never gets easier, you just learn your own technique to doing it. Its still a pain in the arse haha! Take it as a challenge not as a fear... and don’t give a shit what other drivers think! Thats the main thing!! Keep it up buddy!
Davie, after seeing your comment I would urge you to stick with it and give it a "fare" go, cab pun there, it does get better the more you do and the tacho becomes second nature. As for the reversing I can only say take your time, don't let anyone rush you and there is no shame in double checking a blind side or stopping to re-evaluate your angle or re-adjusting your position. Remember we all had to start somewhere. Good luck to you.
Thanks all for the support i very much appreciate all what you guys have said and i will take all the advice you have kindly put down and take it on board (another taxi pun wigan er) thanks again
Amazing, just would like to see emergency gearing down.
Deedy, does it make a difference if you change the Hi box/Low box splitter while in Neutral between 3rd and 4th, as maybe just a meshing problem with the speed you are changing between 3rd and 4th is a bit too quick for the splitter to change between low box, and hi box on the manual gearbox, hense the need fot the double de-clutching needed between 3rd and 4th.
You can range change in neutral no problem. You can still be in low range, flip to high range, before even changing gear and you're away. Works for me anyway.
Can you show us the difference between the DAF and Volvo
I know this is a bit of a random question and not related to this video but are you allowed to take passengers? Say if your Mrs’ wants to go out for the day in your truck (obviously not do any work), could she? Or is this against the rules of companies?
I mean when you’re working btw. So you’re doing the work and your mrs’ will just sit and keep you company
Depends on the company. I’m allowed bring a passenger. 😊
Deady 2012 that’s wicked. Also great video! Makes me scared to get into HGV’ing though lol
Why do you start with in gear number 2 not 1?
Because the gears are really similar and overlap, you don't really need to pull off in 1st at all unless you have a heavy load going up a hill. It's not like a car where the gears are designed for speed and acceleration, the gears are designed to generate a lot of torque (force) high enough to move heavy loads, which means you need more of them and you can't really speed off. You can pretty much pull off in 3rd gear too when empty if you wanted.
good blog mate gary from crewe #thumbsup
Hello! What if I downshift for example from 5HIGH to 4HIGH - the difference between them is around 500 rpm, so when I press clutch and have moved shift lever, what should I do further: - slowly release clutch? - release clutch and give gas at the same time? - blip the throttle like rev matching in car?
No mate, just change it 😊 If it’s a newer box it should slip right in
A company called force wear
They are on the App Store and google play
Quality company
question what happens when u change from low to high & u leave it on high but dont change gear what happens then?
Nothing
Seen you today going up the m53 north give you a beep you didn't hear lol
Legend Deady. good to know then I go for my HGV license when this covid sh1t ends 👍
You still got another year to go for your HGV :/
All being well I'll have my test next month 🤞
Good luck! 🤞
Not driven a split box in a while
Volvo 6 speed easy block change 1,3 in low range low split High range low split 5, then high split 6
very well explained #thumbsup
How do go from top gear to low gear
I tell thi right at beginning of video 😂
Did u have another channel?
Hi deady I 👋, believe it or not but I was driving hgv at the tender age of 13years yes because that asshole of a father would get shit face with alcohol and we would be up nouth somewhere so I would say ffc and drive back to East London and then leave him in the cab to sleep it off W⚓, my favourite truck was the Scamel or the Seddon Atkinson and by the time I was old enough to take my class 1 test I pissed it and yes I lov to gears to but bloody hard work though 👍😉. #Thumbsup.
How to engage Reverse
Do you use the clutch when using the splitter
Yes. Flick the switch, dip the clutch and it splits the gear.
💗💗💗💗
Is it double clutch or synchromesh?
It's synchro but his transmission is either worn or he's really bad at timing the gears, I'd go with the former
Someones been trying to change gears without the clutch. Thats why there wss grinding in the synchros. You shouldnt need to double clutch a synchro box unlesd theyve damaged rhe synchros becsuse they think theyre good and dont need to use the clutch 🤦🏻♂️
❤
Love it that's a great tutorial
I refuse to drive a manual already enough to worry about
Do most new fleets use automatics now?
حسنان
Very confusing
mr pot noodle :D
😂 just stop it mate !
Deady have you a brother called Paul?
This brother called Paul wouldn't be a mechanic would he. If so Im sure I know who you mean, I thought the exact same. Spit ringer.
Will Myers I don't know the guy but a Paul Deady put a comment on truck driver Hayley's video yesterday and the Deady surname is very rare so I wondered if Deady2012 and Paul Deady were brothers or related some how

You are using to many gears I never use that many myself and as for going from 3 to 4th you don’t have to double clutch you just feel it in not to fast well that’s how I’ve done it for 33 years anyway
You can use all the gears it's easier on the drivetrain and everything. It's fine
Well everyone to their own I’ve never done this when I had a Volvo FL 7 you just feel the gears in using you ears 😊
@@andrewjefferies2962 idk I'm Canadian these trucks are pretty cool are 13 speeds are boring.
@@andrewjefferies2962 like I drive an 18 speed and I hit literally every gear while loaded it's easier on the clutch to start in low. idk it's probably unnecessary but it sounds cool
@@tg13fire Keyword is loaded, you don't need to go through them empty
That is an awful shifter, look horribly clunky and uncomfortable. That looks more complicated than it needs to be too for a 13 speed. I just like my eatons nice and easy floaters. That thing just looks like all kinds of odd.
It would do if you’re from the 1800s
Don't need first...... what a crock of shit!!!!. With the lesser powered non turbo motors we had yes you did.... With ultra heavy loads yes you do.... these new drivers crack me up
Now I know why I've only got a puddle jumper rigid, because I can't count that many gears! Seeing the cog light on dash reminded me of being given a Volvo for one night and then finding out that I had driven all night with that on so I had not used the top three gears! Good explanation and good footage showing dash as well. I'll try to remember to catch you live on Saturday. Good luck.
This was really informative I’ve started the process of getting my full entitlement thanks to covid there’s a backlog so it looks like I want have my C+E until November. But with videos like this I can kinda learn whilst I’m waiting at least I’ll have a understanding of driving a Cat C before I get into one.
Mate, you'll barely find a manual these days. Most are autos so you needn't really worry. A 4/4 gearbox is better too. Good luck on your Class 1!
@@Palestina.non.grata86 Im switching jobs and will be going from a 2019 DAF auto tipper to a volvo tipper with same box as above. Kind of dreading it to be honest
5:56 that’s what I called a gearbox fart and I had a few farts when I was new to the manual truck gearbox
I miss my 18 speed box got an auto so got lazy
I learnt a lot, good explanation.
Even for my Dutch man living in Sweden.
On my way to get horses from Ukraina to Roemenië. Thanks to your explanation thinks will go smoothly.
Did you manage to get the horses?
great vid, you will go far, i can feel it in me waters, #thumbsup
Christ it’s been years since I drove a split shift. Nice video though Deedy👍
Hi I just want to ask that can I split the truck while it's on low range gears?
Aren’t most HGV’S automatic? Also can you drive manual HGV with an automatic HGV license as that’s all i passed my practical on 😐
Im learning in an automatic was thinking the same thing, i did want to learn in a manual but didnt have the option 🥴
What mean C on gearbox?
What does the C mean?
I like it thanks
Very interesting, now my question is,is it possible to drive without a sprinter if the truck is loaded? and the fuel consumption be the same?thank you
