    Hi Barry. Welcome to the RME community 🙂 This is a very interesting video. I build a very similar setup with external converters connected to my RME interface - including a patch bay.
    I connected every in-/output of my analog gear (FX, Guitar Amps, Synth) via a patchbay to the converters. My opinion was, that AD/DA conversion would be an issue. But after a couple of weeks, my patch cables went to storage.
    Now I am using TotalMix for each and every routing, since you can make totally crazy sub-mixes in it. Need the compressor within the mic-chain? Snapshot 1. No compressor, but the EQ? Snapshot 2.
    Since the signal is not routed through the DAW, there is no latency issue. And the potential disadvantage of AD/DA conversion is substituted by the fact, that I can fine-control the levels of each device. For example: Hitting the output transformer of the mic pre very hard, than reducing the signal by 6dB and going into the compressor in serial... Or in parallel - it is only a question of the snapshot in TotalMix.
    My "Nightmare for purists" setup: I go with my guitar via a DI into Totalmix, use a reamp-box to hit my Tube amp, have the effect send routed through TotalMix, where I am switching effects and levels and going back. In practise, this is working better than my multi-fx directly in the effect send... And: I can record everything on a fingertip!
    I think the capabilities of TotalMix are enormous, but most musicans only scratch the surface. A really helpful add-on is the ARC USB remote control for the RME interface.
    If you are interested in details, please let me know. I am not a YT guy, but would be happy to share my experience. Probably there are other ones, who are interested in it...

      @@citizenworld8094 @Citizen This is not right. The UFX+ is USB3 as well as Thunderbolt 3. The UFX is connected via USB2, since no more bandwidth is needed (no MADI). Please consider watching RME's video explaining expected latency and bandwidth of the connection.
      I would prefer an USB2 connection, since it is more reliable over long distances. I really h###e the fact, that you can't get TB3 over more than 6ft. Even in 2022 🙂

      I connect my monitor outputs to the patchbay, directly below that I have the inputs to my studio monitors in Normalled mode, meaning they are automatically connected to the monitor outputs directly above without needing to patch. Then when I need to connect my master buss hardware I do that via a hardware insurer in my DAW and physically patch if necessary.
      By wiring my outputs and monitors through the patchbay and if I need to record audio from my computer, I can simply patch that and route to my DAW.

    I will ask again I have a motive for interface for my computer but somethings not working correctly so I’m just gonna go on this analog trip until it hits the task him 788 which was given to me by a friend who was a musician for years. I’m 56 he was 63 - 64 … somewhere in there. Anyway so I’ve got the task and 788 I’ve got a mow 24 I have a power pro plus Behringer mike amplifier and I just bought a set of speakers for all of this stuff to go on to my production studio desk I also bought an LVL 2404 harbinger mixer and each channel has a compression button and a knob to go with that compression button. I also have an octave 22 channel equalizer. What comes first and how do I hook this thing up without screwing it up? Because, I’m used to analogEverything since a while back in the 80s or actually what’s than that in the 70s. It took trial and error to get things right I A Rhythm and lead guitarist I also just bought Alesis drum kit. which is great because I can plug right from the unit attached to it into the recording unit itself. However because of time passing I do not understand how to hook these things up from start to finish. So if you couldn’t track what I said just read through it one more time and I hope that you can answer my question at lyric710.ls@gmail.com.I appreciate any help you can give me.. oh and I’m also a bass guitarist acoustic player singer songwriter becoming a pretty decent drummer now and a pretty decent keyboard player. But I need to know how to hook the units up that is the recording set up itself and should I put the Motu in front of the power pro play from Behringer or should I just leave that aside and just plug right into the Behringer I’m not sure and I’d rather be short than screw something up. So Thank you for any help that you can give me please.

    @ 7:15 Wait, wait… How are you going from UFX /O-1 back into I/-1 directly when tracking?
    Where do the mic and preamp fit into this FX chain during tracking if you’ve already occupied the UFX’s preamp input? i .e. How are you getting a signal from the mic to compress in the first place?

      Watch both of these videos on how to understand patchbays, specifically, patchbays that allow you to adjust what’s called normaling. This is explained in the videos.
      ua-cam.com/video/JjNSsT6E13U/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/DKbz_PgwLDU/v-deo.html
      Also, remember on the RME unit, you simply choose whether you want to use the microphone preamp, or the line level input on the back via Totalmix. The line level inputs are ran to the patchbay. The microphone preamps are accessible with microphone cables, obviously, right.
      Let me know if you have any further questions.

I'm all connected up with ADAT Optical cables [Clock sync ok] so am i correct in connecting the outputs of the Pulse 16 to the outputs of my Patch bay at the back & similarly inputs of Pulse to inputs of Patch bay, so my thinking is can then patch from front to eventually go through outboard gear once recorded. Having a few issues as Pulse outputs don't seem to send signal through Patch bay. I'm fine when I'm patching during tracking, so thinking maybe I'm not assigning this correctly in Reaper. Realinsert not working for me and not much chat on this in Forums so any help would be awesome.

    Barry. Do you have your ferofish connected to your A/I via light pipe?
    Am I getting this right: with this set up you can use both hardware inserts and patchbay seamlessly. I thought about doing a similar thing with a focusrite Scarlett… but this seems a lot better

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  2 роки тому

      The signal goes as follows. Ferrofish outputs to top row of the first half of the patchbay.
      The inputs of the analog hardware are placed directly below the Ferrofish outputs. So if the patch a is set to Normaled, the. The source on the top of the patchbay (always outputs from devices) then the top row is connected to the top row without any patching.
      The outputs of the hardware then are connected the the second half of the patchbay’s top row. The inputs to the Ferrofish are connected to the bottom row.
      I recommend watching the how to wire a patchbay on my channel.

      @@SinkaneTV Your question is better framed this way if I'm understanding you. How does the Ferrofish get all the IO back and forth between the computer. There are two ways with the version I have. ADAT or MADI. Since I have an RME Fireface UFX+ that the Ferrofish is connected to, I use MADI. If you do not have a MADI rig, then via ADAT. You can do up to 32 channels of IO via ADAT at 44.1/44. There are also USB and Dante version available as well. Does that answer your question?

    Cranborne 500ADAT

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  2 роки тому +2

      Although I find that unit very interesting, it’s not right for my application. For the cost of 1, I only get 8 channels of I/O and it’s “ Restricted” to just my 500 series. With the Pulse, I get 16 for less money and I can run anything through it.
      Where I think the Craneborne is more compelling is if a person does not have a 500 series box, and need additional IO beyond their existing interface IO to add 500 series units, or maybe they sell their existing 500 lunchbox, and use that towards this unit.
      Other than that, I don’t see the value. It’s cheaper to go with a Pule 16 regardless.
