As a laborer, a shallow clip does add the benefit of easy aqusition, with the benefit of not having accidental squeezing of the clip while pulling out, which can cause it to grab the pocket edge.
Exactly how I see it. It’s nice that there are deep carry clips out there if someone wants one, but for trades and the profession of arms, easy acquisition is key. I need gloved access. Deep carry doesn’t work for me.
Love mine! It's exactly as you say, a big PM2. Oddly enough, that actually makes it less suited to use with gloves (not tactically, just cold weather use in the upper Midwest.) The military's liner lock was much easier to manipulate with gloves. Kinda wish they'd named this the PM4, and then made a military 2 with these ergos and a liner lock.
I have decorative lanyards on some of my knives, and it depends on the knife if I need a lanyard. But I do choose lanyards on most of the smaller folders. Just easier to get to and hold onto.
@@blairburrell2620 this is a folder, but not a small one... Lanyards are for people who really use their knives (camping, hiking, construction / trades), not for people who EDC their knives (cut boxes, threads, lunch).
My first “real” knife decades ago was a Military and Police model. Carrying a Microtech these days but have a strong urge to make a nostalgic purchase. Especially with the newer steels available. Thanks for the info.
I've had a Military 2 for like 7 months, s110v and crucarta. We're finally getting to it or something? I get rid of the lock stick by spinning the blade stop pin with needle nose pliers.
These look great. I'll have to get one eventually. My PM2 had super strong lock stick. After trying a few things, just putting some oil on the lock face. Working the lock and cleaning it worked it out fast.
oiling the lock face sounds like a recipe for disaster. the last place you want to be smooth and frictionless is the part where contact and friction are preventing the knife from closing on your fingers.
Mine had lock stick after I put new scales on it. I addressed it by removing the scale on the lock side, made sure it was positioned in a way where it was lined up well with the lock, and made sure not to over-tighten the screws. Much better now.
15v sprint run is coming out of this knife with a few others. Hopefully i can get one. Sad part is there are very few if any custom scales for this model. Everyone stops at the pm2.
lol, Spyderco was born in the mountains, and popularized by the climbing community. Ya know, the guys that absolutely appreciate that annoying, outdated tube. Deleting that dedicated tie off point, due to the modern trending crybabies, would be like Carhartt prioritizing fashion trends over the tough work clothes that they were founded upon. It’s also a work knife, and would not benefit from “comfortable contouring” of the scales. If it would have improved the overall performance of the tool in any significant way, the Spyderco would have done it to this particular model. Everything about the Military 2 has been thought through to every last detail. But you know that
The heel of the sharpened edge is a non-issue if you know how to sharpen. It's very simple to add in a sharpening choil with something as basic as the corner of a sharp maker stone. It's also very simple to grind that small smile down to extend the sharpened edge all the way to the edge of the finger choil. I have done both with zero problems. It's perfectly possible to make the area look fine after repeated sharpenings with either method.
Screws snap, it happens. Though very rare. If I have had any issues with a Spyderco, they always taken care of me and sent me new hardware or whatever the issue has been.
Military…. Hit it with a hammer! 😅. Thanks for the reminder on clone cautions! There will be lots of people buying gifts that may not be aware of the pot holes at some “sell-it-all” discount online sites.
I've only ever stripped screws out in my cheap knives (sub $20 garbage). I've never had issues on more established brands; in fact, I've had more expensive knives eat the driver tip on cheap bits.
The only thing i would change on this series spyderco is the clip. At least once a year i get something im carring looped under the spoon and it bends the clip. I have to take out the screws and bend it back. Im eyeballing those northlynch (i think) TI ones. If anyone has a better suggestion under 80$ im open.

The clip screws are pretty notorious for breaking or stripping. It seems their supplier has a spectrum of hardness, you may have just been lucky so far. I have 3 that I've had to move the clip on, only one I had a problem with was my blurple s110v pm2, one screw made it half way back into the scale then snapped below the scale line. I just left it cus I don't feel like talking the scales off and trying to back out the nub with pliers or something. Two screws hold it in place just fine.
😂 as I was pressing the button to play the video. I said to myself "wouldn't a xl pm2 be a military 2? 😅. The carbon fiber S90V is amazing. Spyderco treats their S90V perfectly. I love my pm2 in s90v. Fun to sharpen.
@metal_complex although I completely agree with you on the tip theory. I will say my military 2 in s110v has picked up a couple chips near the tip from normal use. I think it has something to do with the length and the fact the blade tapers down so thin near the tip
My spydercos have never let me down , no issues yet , my benchmades have broken my heart , then gotten back together with me , and then broke me again. I like Manix 2 XL, the military 2 will be mine one day too
Jc but how did benchmades let u down. New to collecting and I just like em. Not all models but all Ive purchased just felt better in the pocket and hand than any spydercos. Plus they're nicer looking. Now I do agree the big belly on a spyderco makes sense but until bm breaks my heart ...
Normally, i agree with you in most stuff you say, but i don't know why you hate lanyard holes so much. I have a cruwear pm2 as an edc, and i use a lanyard to pull i out from my pocket in between a tool powch and my concealed gun (which otherwise would be in the way)😅
I would very much like to see some new designs from Spyderco USA. I’m not really into sprint runs and I think they could really benefit from a new design utilizing their Colorado factory. They’ve rested on the laurels of the paramilitary line and native/shaman line for too long.
They have been doing it for 40 years. They are the pioneers of new and innovative/risky designs. And besides that, have you actually looked at their entire collection currently?
It took me a long time to warm to Spyderco's. Their odd looks and the shallow carry on many of their folders put me off. But now that I've started late into the Spyderco game, I've realised that looks and deep carry are often too much of a compromise instead of excellent cutting function, secure action and ease of access with a working blade.
Do they actually make Lefty PM3/militarys..? Speaking as the owner of a lefty PM2, I love handing it to my right handed knife guy friends and watching them; while you can operate the locks in your off-hand with practice, watching people fumble with a lefty PM2 reminds me of why I'll probably never buy a knife with a right-hand compression lock...
Yeah it is cool. I had a barrel stuck so bad I stripped the plastic knob that turns the bolt. Not a big problem though. The head of the bolt is tooled for a hexagonal wrench.
I broke the tip off my first PM2 acting like an idiot and prying with it. I actually still have it. I ground the broken end down to make a sort of sheep’s foot thing. It works great but looks ridiculous
Yeah, I’ve never understood how some people say that the ball lock or whatever it’s officially called, is better. Hand position doesn’t is awkward or less natural.
I have owned a tanto PM2, S30v, for nearly ten years. Only ever stropped it, Spydercos heat treat is second to none in my experience, their s45vn is even better. Ugly, but incredibly effective!
I've gotten a lot of use outta my several Spydercos, but I'm pretty pissed with them atm. I sent in a knife they haven't produced in nearly 20 years to get a replacement pivot pin and they sent it back with a reprofiled blade, having taken 3/16" off the OAL of the blade and removed the trailing point (chinook 3). They treated me like I'm the idiot and that's how it was, but I have pictures from before and after. Now it can only be carried tip down because the point isn't completely in the handle. So as much as I like Spydies, I'm gonna pass for a while.
@@powersww1reset When I explained what happened, I got a lot of attitude, and was told they couldn't help me because they weren't in their office and would have to call me back. They've been dodging my calls ever since. It's just fuel to the fire.

Yeah grabbing a deep carry clipped knife with a leather glove doesn't work very well, so I keep several users with their standard carry clip.

Interesting
Honestly i'd have like it with the balllock or their old wire lock or something pretty sure it whas on the sage 5 and it whas goooodd
I'll give you a better insight into strapping a rope to your tools here in the mountains... if you drop something, sometimes you can't pick it up.
Yeah that's true. Applies to a much smaller audience, but true 👍

That Spyderco liner lock was one of the best out there. The compression lock is better though.
That little 'smile' bit where the sharpening choil could be goes away after a sharpening or two. All mine have the blade neatly meet the ricasso now
We need a pm 2.5. I just ordered an Ontario rat 1.5 and i love that i can split the difference to get my perfect size.
Yeah, something like 3.5"- 3.75" would be great. The PM2 is just a little too small.

Sharp Dressed Knives sell a nice tool for the lanyard tube. And well worth the money 👍🏻
For my PM2 I took a little round file and filed a sharpening choil in. Looks factory, took 20 min.
Well, I like its design language. You can tell from miles away.
