How to disassemble and maintain the Spyderco Military 2 (with sneak preview)

- Today, we'll take a look inside a brand new knife from Spyderco, the Military 2, which reveals itself to be... a Paramilitary 2 which is larger. Nice.
Michael Janich actually raised a good point about tip down on the Military models.
Since the knife is so big, your fingers aren't anywhere near the hole when pulling it out of the pocket (hands might vary of course). Thus when carrying tip down, your hand is positioned so that you can either spydie drop it or just reposition your hand without moving it along the knife too much. Had the knife been tip up, you might have to crawl up the knife with your hand instead.
It kinda makes sense on paper, I guess, but I'd like to hear your thoughts, Nick, in the full review perhaps. Small hands and all. If I was buying a Millie 2, I'd definitely try it out.
With hands this small, my fingers are always far away 🤣
in practice, though, that's quite reasonable, particularly if this is the only knife you carry and you can get used to tip-down.

Looks like Spyderco didn't take any risks with the construction. I'm amazed at how consistently they knock things out of the park.
Design wise, sure. The quality of their fit and finish has tanked the last year or so.
Really? They are WAY behind in the knife world. I cannot believe they still don't have captive pivots and all the same size hardware.
@@GerstBladeworks The pivot is captive. You can quite clearly see the "D" cut out on the show side.
@@EarthwurmJurm I don't think so, otherwise it wouldn't have two screws. It might have a cut out but it must serve another purpose because all Spydercos are that way.

I'm generally with you on tip up. In fact, I carry most all knives tip up. However, with a knife of this size and length, when carrying tip up, upon drawing from the pocket I find that I have to "shimmy" my hand up quite a bit to access the knife well enough to open it. When carrying a long knife tip down, I find that when I draw the knife I can simply let it pivot and it's in position to open. Much more convenient and secure operation with less chance of fumbling the "shimmy" and dropping the knife.
Tip down is best for larger knives like this, when you withdraw it from your pocket, your thumb is right there over the blade hole, for instant opening, rather than having to juggle it around in your hand..

Great Video. :-) I never purchased the other Compression-Lock variations of these, like the PM2 and PM3. Because, they were too small for my hands. But, this one is a perfect size for me. I absolutely luv it! :-)
I absolutely luv mine. It's become one of my all-time favorite Spyderco Folders. I would highly recommend this one to all that like bigger folders, that fit their bigger hands, better. This is a great Compression-Lock Folder, in my personal opinion. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)

Have one and love it. I put a long standard Lynch NW clip. Really good in the hand. I’ve taken mine apart a bunch of times to get rid of serious lock stick. With a thin screw driver slide it down between the liner and scale 👍🏻
I'm used to tip down carry primarily just because my EDC for most of the last 15 years or so has been my original Paramilitary. The primary advantage is that I absolutely love that knife.
Otherwise I'd definitely prefer tip up.

I carry tip down on all my Spyderco models that allow it. Thumb and forefinger in the Spydie Hole then a flick of the wrist. It's the fastest way to deploy.

My first pocket clip knife was a Ken Onion blackout. Carried that knife for 15 years, at this point anything other than tip down feels like a fumbled football.
I carried that knife every day at work as a carpenter. I used and abused it for 7 years!
It's still as good as when I bought it and man, does that thing take an edge!

Can you do a review and disassembly video in the screw together Spyderco Manix 2. I have the new Stormtrooper model with Rex 45 blade and would sure like to see a video before I take mine apart!
It looks exactly like the PM2, only a bit larger, and a different subframe!
Nick, instead of going through so many steps too center, open the blade in to locking position, loosen scale & stop pin screws (sometimes only scale screw(s) ) push the blade TOWARDS the favoring side, while keeping pressure on the push, tighten the scale screw & stop screw. Then close blade & check for centering. A much faster, direct way to center the blade. 😉
Not a huge steel difference, but it's odd it's not s45vn considering it's now the base on pm2 and para3.
Agreed! As an end user, I don’t know that I’ll really be able to tell a difference, but it’s odd that the base steel isn’t unified across the range.
the difference is not dramatic but i definitely had less chipping on the s45vn and also zero rust so far (had some staining on s30v back then).

I'm looking for a larger knife. I was thinking of the Yojumbo 3 vs the Military 2. Do you have any opinions? A comparison would be great. I love to see you compare them head to head.

I thought there was only one Yojumbo? Theres a yojimbo, yojimbo 2, microjimbo and the yojumbo as far as i know. The Military 2 grip is probably a lot more comfortable and but i like the blade shape of the yojimbo family. You can’t go wrong with either but i think the Military might be more practical

The paramilitary 2 has a pivot bushing between the washers? I know my spyderco canis has it. SUPER SMOOTH action with no blade play. My PM2 is smooth too but not as much
Nick, you can separate the scales from the lanyard ring. It takes slight pulling pressure and a twist. Take it easy though. I'm upgrading my PM2 with a Ti back spacer, pivots, and screws.

For a knife that has no close-biased spring action (a la Benchmade, or similar) I’ll always favor tip down. Gravity is your friend. I was carrying a ZT frame lock, tip up, in the leg pocket of a flight suit. Loose pocket. Not fashionable skin-tight jeans. Got back from my flight. Knife had jarred loose a little,’blade opened from gravity. Sliced the sh** out of my flight suit. No bueno. I believe there would have been less damage if the knife had been in tip-down carry. If any damage at all. Lesson learned. I only carry tip down in situations like that now.
There’s a place for either. Both. For the Same person, but different shituations.
I always find I have so much trouble with the dual adjust pivot. It’s always been you either have boatloads of play and a fun action. On the other side no play but a sticky, worse then a lockback action with no bladeplay. On top of this the screws always come lose even with locktite.

A lot of people in these comments are sayin this is a PM2 or under the assumption. It is not a PM2. This is a M2. Military 2. Not PARA military 2. Just to clairfy a LOT of these comments. Hope this helps.

The only changes I would make to this is S45vn blade as standard and a modification to more easily take off the lanyard tube.

The original is one of the best liner locks available so it was not that urgently needed.
@@JohnFrumFromAmerica not saying the military needed an upgrade but it seems like the compression lock was more popular since the designers opted for it when designing the para 3 and not the military's linerlock. Seems like a fairly obvious option to give since the rest of the "military" family has that compression lock

lock bar/lock interface, will absolutely cause lock stick.
Personally, I have started using grease, on my comp lock spyderco’s.
I learned this the hard way with a Tri-Ad lock knife lol

Should Spyderco be doing better than S30V on base models in 2023? Curious what others think. I feel like I’ll be waiting for an inevitable sprint run…
The way Spyderco heat treats S30V, I'll take it any day, if the price is right. Sharpens a treat, strops back nicely, and holds its edge more than well enough for my usage.
I think S30V for $200 on the Military 2 is better than S30V for $240 on the original Military
I’d ideally prefer S45VN like the standard PM2s have now, but since Spyderco aren’t complete frauds when it comes to their heat treatments, S30V isn’t bad at all to me. You’re also getting 4 inches of it on a well-built compression lock knife. Over half an inch more cutting edge for a minor steel decrease and a price increase of $10 from the PM2. Not a bad deal to me, especially since other models by them sporting S30V in the same price range, like the Yojumbo, are well-loved
Yeah, i want one. That detent ball path is pretty interesting, it's hard to look super close on camera, but could it be some kinda special acid etch? Ceramic coating to reduce friction and increase wear resistanceto the ceramic detent ball?

when you flip to close the knife, does the choil hit your index finger? I know para2 have this problem (para1 don't)
One thing I'm really liking is the liner doesn't go to the edge of scales so skinny scales can be made. I'm not a fan of Spyderco's beer gut scales.
I don’t *fully* understand evangelical tip up/down people. I have mostly tip up but my millies, pm2 and a couple seki cities, I keep tip down. I actually kind of like it on certain models…it’s ergonomically nice to have the clip up and out of the way.
I wish S45vn was the standard spyderco steel. It is on the para 2 now.

I prefer tip down carry. I like when i pinch the top of my knife and pull it out of my pocket. I like that my hand rolls into my knife in a way that it is ready for me to open it. It started with the kershaw leek. I kept my pm 2 tip down and changed my para 3 to tip down; because i prefer it. I do have tip up knifes but i far prefer tip down knifes

I only carry me knives tip down when I choose to do so in me back pocket - it just feels a wee bit safer when the side of the pocket prevents the knife from accidentally opening on me

Magnacut on a Spyderco? Ha. You MIGHT get a bentobox version in Magnacut. Spyderco themselves never want to go super steel. At least S45VN. They need to just eliminate S30V all together.
@@SMS2884 even leatherman did a magnacut blade on the latest release so i hope spyderco will go for it...they even have a magnacut blade on one of the salt knives
@@SMS2884the native salt already has magnacut. Probably not going to get a military in magnacut but I'm sure they'll be using more of it in the future
Spyderco doesn't do super steels? S110v, S90v, Maxamet are all available on golden models. Oh and magnacut. All regular production. They offer K390 on many of their Japanese models. They offer maxamet and 20cv on some Taichung models. M390 on their Italian made stuff.
They also offer a variety of more "average" steels they offer like S45, s35, s30v, bd1n, cru-wear, lc200n, h1/h2, n690, xhp, vg10.
There are reasons to bag on Spyderco, steel variety isn't one of them.
I prefer tip down carry when possible because the knife opens more naturally for me...and having my finger sliced open by a tip up carry knife doesn't help
I think more people would buy these if they made a non lanyard hole model.

Agreed. Myself I don't use Lanyards on Pocket Knives. So, I don't have a use for them. And, it makes you have to get a Spyderco Scale Remover if you desire to swap out the Scales without damaging them in the process. Also, as said, it makes it more difficult for having a nice deep carry pocket clip. I totally agree. But, I still absolutely luv my Spyderco Compression-Lock Military 2, it absolutely "ROCKS!!!" And, is one of my all-time favorite Spyderco Folders. These are super sweet Blades. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
The only times tip down is actually better is on an otf or fixed blade 😂 tip up carry is without a doubt the best way to carry a knife
It doesn’t matter to me if it’s tip up or tip down, some of us are just more eclectic than others.

You never showed it being fully centered! I find this to be a problem with Spydercos, getting them back centered after take down and cleaning!!! Am I alone on this???

I thought the whole purpose of the bushing was to remove the dependence of the action on the tightness of the pivot screw...Not sure why this wasn't the case here
This is not a passthrough bushing like on CRK, so it doesn't have the same effect.

huh? us spydies are pretty well made, japanese models are pretty cheap feeling and the fit'n'finish isn't half as good though (aside from the moki made ones).

I haven't handled the military 2, but the military is nearly the same handle profile and feels _smaller_ in hand than the yojumbo and almost identical to the pm2
