    Dropping a complete rebrand on someone out of the blue might be coming on a bit strong. A business owner tends to take a lot of pride in their business and they're usually pretty attached to their current branding, considering that they likely already have signage and business cards and what have you. Things that they would be on the hook for if they went through with the rebrand. This is definitely a case where you would want to get in contact with the owner first to make certain that they are onboard. It's less of a surprise, but more of a service to the community.

      Be that as it may, giving them the full picture immediately without costing them a lot of time and effort with back-and-forth communication and upfront costs, etc., they are technically more likely to consider it. They may be attached to the old branding, but giving them a full package might just sway them and give them some inspiration. It might re-ignite their passion if they might have had a difficult time and something new could just be the thing that they need.

    This is brilliant. There's a guy in NYC that goes around and updates business notices posted on the street. He puts them up and walks away.
    Same kinda thing here. Updating businesses, giving them the design to do with it as they will.
    Most small businesses in the trades have very little time to bother with design once the initial work is done. Plus, it's usually expensive.
    Doing this for small businesses once a year (or more), is a way to give to a community in a big way.
    Trade companies getting a re-brand leaves their customers surprised and in awe when they see the refreshed looks. This then gets more word-of-mouth going and they earn more business.
    I've friends in trade work and did active business-to-business face-to-face networking for 15 years. I know the value of what you gave and if activated by the recipient, how the redesign can affect their business.
    Great work! Inspring.

    I love, *love* the idea of using design for good. Its like a super power designers have but seldom exercise beyond their day to day job. I once received an old photo from a war vet who wanted some of his memories from that time restored. However it wasn't actually meant for me but somehow landed in my inbox via a typo. The company he wanted to send it to would have charged him money. I ended up doing it for free.

    I think the logo that they have been using is now recognisable to them or their clients. Some clients doesn't like to change their old logo because of recognition for their old customers.
    I have been working on brand identity for years and I get concepts rejection because of they cannot get rid of the old one...
    They always get stuck to it & tries to keep the old fonts or elements used in the previous one.

    working at a design college in New York I remember a class project where students did the same thing: redesign the identity of a small local business. Some of those images went online in the students's portfolios and there were several business owners who got all upset about this. Funny thing - to me - was that they should have been over the moon for getting better design, what can you do? Well, we apologized. Profusely!

    Keep this up. It reminds me of the guy who mows peoples super overgrown lawns and fixes their gardens etc for free. Maybe send the link from the first video along with the wetransfer link with future 'clients'? Might help explain what you're doing. They can verify your channel and from that, that you're not a hacker.
    Did you get them to check out your company website? Hell, even THAT can all be faked, these days. I don't blame them for not opening a mysterious link when you wanted to be fully anonymous. It would be a risk to open an unsolicited link like that, and anyone can say anything in a follow up phone call. Fraudsters do it every day, sadly.

    Nicely done, Will & Sam, a definite improvement over the original, it would've been great to hear back from them even if they ended up not using these assets, I could think they worry about having to hire a graphic designer to keep up the new level in quality, and cost to them for the overhaul.
    I did the same with a personal project to rebrand Screwfix a few years back, creating a system for this and their additional brand Plumbfix and Electricfix, identifying where I felt problems lay overall. This project is currently online.

    Communication companies tend to have pretty tight cyber security as they're often targeted by bad actors. I would have been more surprised if someone had responded to it because it most definitely got flagged as spam. Also, if you're sending it to a general email that goes out to multiple people or even worse, all staff, I guarantee nobody is going to open that - especially with that subject line. You'd have better success contacting a brand manager directly and letting them know to expect an email or just emailing the person directly instead of the entire sales department.

    Hey Will! This was fun to watch, I’ve been wanting to do something for my local area as well 😄
    What isn’t sitting right with me tho is trying to convince this business to use your work and mentioning at the end ‘(next time) you’re going to make sure the person/company you do this for is actually going to take it and run with it’
    Imo for an established business to be on board or receptive to a new identity, I feel as tho some key context is missing or overlooked. Info on their primary customers, their business journey/goals, significance of their existing brand assets (eg. what is the impact of suddenly changing their brand colour to blue?)
    Understandably, a business might not be as inclined to suddenly switch over their brand identity without some of these considerations.
    I understand this is free and you’re looking to do some good for local businesses, but intentions aside, a ‘better’ identity is subjective and not necessarily true in the eyes of the business or their customers.
    Again, I enjoyed this video purely as a design exercise 😄 but this was sounding a bit more than inspiration and entertainment for us designers.

    • @willpatersondesign
      @willpatersondesign  Місяць тому +1

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching it!
      I don't believe a better brand identity is subjective. I think it's pretty obvious when it is. However, that doesn't mean that they to take the work and use it.
      "making sure they take it next time" isn't about forcing anyone - it's about changing how I do it next time.
      We don't struggle to give work to clients at all, it appears that this company genuinely hasn't seen the work at all so they won't use it. Which is completely fine with me, that's part of the video!
      Next time, we're going to change the way we do a couple things to get them to use the work. :)

    rebranding is a lot of effort. Plus, he might have been perfectly happy with his current branding. If i was in his shoes, I wouldn't have bothered either probably. I assume he gets enough customers, if he started rebranding he'd need to redo all of his signs, his business cards, his website, his truck...
    You need to do a rebrand all at once, because you can't have the old brand in one place and the new one in another, or you shouldn't at least.

    It's always fun to redesign someone's logo and brand for fun but it's ALWAYS rude to send it to them and hope (or ask) them to use it. They didn't ask for your opinion. They most likely like their logo and you just come off as narcissistic and weird. When I was in university, one of my graphic design classes had an assignment of finding a company to redesign or create a logo for. It was just for the class, nothing official. I chose to design a logo for my boyfriend's church's food bank. I based it on their actual logo and when I presented the original logo to the class, I was in absolute disbelief how the ENTIRE CLASS and professor tried to convince me to redesign their logo for them (and actually ask them to switch to it) because they deemed it "bad". It was not bad at all and I was grossed out at how disrespectful everyone was.

    Not surprised they didn't answer. Not that the logo was bad (because it wasn't). But there was no up front contact. You didn't know what they liked about their old one. Why they had selected their colors. And you were not able to tell them why you had chosen the colors you used. The secret client also wasn't looking for a new logo. And it costs to change a logo, even for a small company. Signage needs to be changed, cars needs to be re-branded and so on.
    but: Who knows. Maybe they come back 6 months, 24 months, 48 months from now and say: "Hey, we decided to rebrand and went for the logo you sent us way back."
    you're up for the waiting game. :)

    _Off-topic but maybe people can learn from my mistake_
    I've been watching your videos for years and I've learned so much about logo design. Your videos have inspired me to design logos, just for fun or for friends but I never asked to get paid.
    I used to go to a "youth club" (not sure how you call it in English) and last year, a guy who works there told me that they were going to change their logo. I told him that I knew a thing or two about logo design and he gave me his email address for me to send him some ideas for the new logo.
    After spending quite some time trying different ideas with different colors, I ended up sending him 3 logo ideas. He wrote back saying that he loved the ideas and that he was going to forward them to his boss. After a couple of weeks, he told me that they were going to hire a "real" company to design the new logo as well as paint the logo on the walls and give them new business cards with the new logo. I was a little disappointed (mainly because I wouldn't be able to brag "see that logo? That was me!" 😉) but then I forgot about it.
    Last week, I went there again and I was shocked when I saw one of my logos on the wall. I talked to the guy and he said that his boss showed one of my logos to the company for inspiration and they just copied it. I didn't know what to say, so I just didn't say anything.
    It's not about the money, I would have probably done it for free. It's about feeling that, to them, I'm just an "amateur" that's not good enough but then, it is my work that they chose to keep as their new image.
    What did I do wrong? Even if I had sent them a logo with a watermark or something like that, the company could have easily copied the logo anyway. How do professionals do this? How can you show some ideas and make sure no one else is going to use your ideas?

    • @jamesmcknight6368
      @jamesmcknight6368 Місяць тому +1

      That really hurts to read, I am sorry for that experience man. You do still have bragging rights in my opinion, especially if you can evidence your contribution to the concept with the original files and emails. But if you didn't have a contract in place to protect yourself then there's not much you can do. The sad thing is that without charging for your services, it does inherently devalue your work, giving them the misinformed perception that it was better to hire another company. They should have known better than to copy what was given tbh, but they also may not have known where it was sourced from or what the brief actually was. You are worth something, if your work was used that's proof enough you're worth paying.
      Definitely have a signed agreement with any future clients or people you do serious work for, or have a written proof of agreement that concepts belong to you until payment. Upon which ownership of the content transfers to the client when it is sent. Good luck going ahead man, personally I'd still use your stolen work as a portfolio piece as you can at least evidence your own contributions to the project and hopefully do so with reference from the guy you initially sent your ideas to. Fingers crossed anyways pal

    Hi, we have a saying: no initiative goes unpunished. To be honest, I wouldn't risk and offer logo review even if it's really bad. I've seen one logo recently with a lemur tail in front of the text which looked absolutely phallic, but I kept my mouth shut about it as there is this factor: many logos are created by business owners themselves or family members, that's why they associate themselves with it. So no matter how well you design it, they see it as an attack at their personality. So only do the job which you are sure is somehow expected to be done. Seriously, save up the energy and ideas on something worthy, like your own projects. Good luck! I liked the design.

    That dalecomm isn't a small local company, certainly not one man and his van. Will, I believe you've fallen for the 'appear as based locally advertising'. It's an interesting topic but essentially dalecomm probably have a network of engineers that are self employed and will pass jobs onto them based on location and charge a fee. So it's not really a comms company, it's an advertising company. They probably have several different ads and company logos, names etc. that they run on different platforms. If you call any of them, you're connected to the same place and the van that turns up to do the job will have no branding on it so they really have little interest in rebrands.

    I’m a little torn on this, Will.
    Yes, the design needed help. But the problem with cold-designing a new brand identity is that you’re essentially saying, “Hello, nice to meet you. Your brand is ugly and I knew I could do it better so here’s a really good version without all the dumb choices you made. You’re welcome.”

  • @mikecoopey
    @mikecoopey Місяць тому

    The new design is clean and modern for sure, but did you pay any attention to audience and market position? Did you consider whether this updated design communicates with the target audience? There is a great deal to be said for cheap-looking home-made ads appealing to a certain local mindset looking for personal, low-priced services of which the original ad implies. The update is just stuff aligned and spaced out with a few font contrasts. Classic inexperienced day-one student approach with the arrogance that everything they see they can do better, with zero time or energy spent talking to or understanding the client needs, market, audience or whose toes they're stepping on. This is just a lazy, generic and boring layout exercise completely out of touch with people of certain generations that read these free magazines and rely on cheap, local services.

    I dunno dude, this doesn’t seem like a good idea. For all you know their son did the logo / identity last year and this comes off as a put down. Perhaps you should reach out first and see if they want to be part of a UA-cam video, and then go for it.
    I think you’ll get a lot of ghosting (at best) going down this route.
