  • Oshino Hakkai, meaning "Eight Seas of Oshino," is a collection of eight ponds located in the small village of Oshino, situated in the Fuji Five Lakes region of Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. These ponds are fed by snowmelt from Mount Fuji, which filters through the porous volcanic rock over several decades, resulting in remarkably clear and pristine water.
Historically, Oshino Hakkai was part of the Fujisan Nemoto Hakko Sacred Grounds, and visiting the ponds was an integral part of Mount Fuji worship. Religious practitioners would purify themselves in these waters before ascending the mountain. Although this practice has declined, the ponds remain a significant cultural and spiritual site.
The ponds are named Deguchiike, Okamaike, Sokonashiike, Choshiike, Wakuike, Nigoriike, Kagamiike, and Shobuike, each with unique characteristics. For instance, Kagamiike is known for reflecting Mount Fuji like a mirror. The area is a designated Natural Monument of Japan and part of the Mount Fuji World Heritage Site.
Oshino Hakkai is a popular tourist destination, offering visitors a picturesque setting with traditional village houses, shops, and watermills, all set against the backdrop of Mount Fuji.
