  • Zuihoden is the mausoleum of Date Masamune, the founder of the Sendai Domain and a prominent daimyo during Japan's Edo period. Located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, it serves as the final resting place for Masamune and several of his descendants.
    Historical Significance
Date Masamune, known as the "One-Eyed Dragon" due to losing an eye to disease, was a powerful and influential feudal lord. He established the Sendai Domain and significantly contributed to the region's development. Masamune passed away in 1636, and his mausoleum, Zuihoden, was constructed the following year according to his will.
    Architectural Style
Zuihoden is built in the ornate Momoyama architectural style, characterized by its elaborate and colorful decorations. The original structure was designated a National Treasure in 1931 but was destroyed during World War II bombings in 1945. It was rebuilt in 1979 and further restored in 2001 to closely resemble the original design, incorporating features such as lion mask sculptures and dragon heads.
    Complex Layout
The Zuihoden complex includes several other mausoleums:
    • Kansenden: The mausoleum of Date Tadamune, Masamune's son and the second lord of the Sendai Domain. It was rebuilt in 1985 after being destroyed in 1945.
    • Zennoden: The mausoleum of Date Tsunamune, Masamune's grandson and the third lord of the Sendai Domain. It was also rebuilt in 1985 and restored in 2007.
    • Myounkaibyo: This area contains the graves of the ninth lord Date Chikamune and the eleventh lord Date Nariyoshi, along with other family members.
    • Okosamagobyo: The burial site for the children of the Date clan, including Date Yoshimura, the fifth lord of the Sendai Domain.
