A message to everyone watching this and struggling to play: Keep going! I first watched this about a year and half ago and I was baffled, wondering how I would ever manage this, but if you keep practising it will eventually come to you and you'll be able to fingerpick alternating bass patterns on any song and sound like a pro. This is a really excellent introduction to this, good luck!
This is a great message. It will sound completely off, and nothing like the video above. But over time, it will slowly involve into the sound of this lesson.
Monotone THANK YOU FRIEND FOR GREAT SOUND ADVICE.I NEED A DOUBLE DOSE OF DISCIPLINE.GREAT FOR SOME LATE NIGHT N👁👁DLING🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎼🎸🎸🎼🔥🔥

Monotone thanks for the positive slant, I watched the video and thought that’s beyond me, but because of your comments , I’m going to persevere, thanks 👍

+Shelby Lollar Thumb Way Up for making it easy to access the parts I need to work on.
I'm going to start doing this on other channels. Maybe it will inspire guitar channel owners to add this on all their instructional videos? Great job Shelby, and Thank You!.

***** I'm not greedy either! It's a deal than. And someone said there were no more friendly people on the internets
***** haha maybe later, bro. I'm under surveillance right now
the multi screen is immensely useful, brilliant idea
Who else just loved the intro and kept watching :D
Thanks!
I went through all the lessons for this a few years ago and eventually managed to play it,
I’m doing it again now as a refresher, it’s great if you want to get into finger style guitar.
Like Eric says, take it slow. You’re a great teacher Eric, thank you.
Thanks for the kind words, James.
It would take me a lifetime to learn that intro! Beautiful.
Thanks, Andrew.
Learning now and the first 20 seconds of this video showed me that my pinky acting as a plant to support my hand for finger style picking is perfectly fine. Amazing.
There you have it, I found my new hobby, and a fav channel! Thanks so much for the lesson. I needed something like this. Played this on my guitar all day today. Can't wait to continue the lessons!
What a great lesson. You can tell this master loves what he plays
Thank you, Tim!
I can not express enough how nice it is to see everything from player perspective. Few videos are recorded with that in mind, and for whatever reason the observer perspective doesnt register with my brain haha.
I wanna say that I subscribed for jamplay a few years ago and only for this series. It was one of the most important and fun ones in my life. I do appreciate Eric Madis a lot for sharing his knowledge and some wonderful song arrangements with the world.
Thank you, Julian!
I've been trying to get this right for years, This dude is awesome, huge thumbs up!
Thank you, sir.
I love this, thank you for making this video and making it freely available!
I've been playing guitar for over fifty years an you really helped me pull it all together with my ragtime piedmont style of playing with your lesson thank you ,very much.
That is so cool, thanks for your message!
amazing teaching by even amazing teacher. thank u!
Thanks very much!
You Rock Eric! Thank you so much
Thanks, bro!
Most excellent, I'll definately be watching for more on this series, thanks Eric.
Thanks!
Thank you!! I have been wanting to play this style for years. I never tried because I thought it was way too difficult for me. Now.....I am playing it!!!!!!! Oooh still so much to learn...I love it!!!
That is great news, thanks!
How kind you are!! This video is so helpful.
I love how you're a finger picker who doesn't grow the nails long on your picking hand. I've been playing for a very long time and prefer to feel the strings on my fingertips, rather than using a nail. And it sounds so smooth!
Yea I'm the same! Finger nails can sound like uncontrollable picks sometimes. Skin on string, I just love the tone.
I play with no nails too...I really like the tone of paying with the nail but the feeling of the string piling against my nail is just really weird.
Nate Williams sdas sads Yes. The tone is so much more appealing to me than fingernails. And I have more control.
The deal is, you can't fingerpick fast if you use your fingertips, it's okay for blues, but not for classical guitar
I like the crispy sound the nails make. Coming from the bass guitar to the accoustic guitar my nails were always short, but after some classical guitar lessons I let them grow and fell in love with it. Also I agree with the guy who says you can´t play fast and also loose some precision with no nails. But like you said, it sounds smooth.
This is great! I am looking forward to these lessons! Thank you!
Thank you, Blaine!
Excellent, you are a born teacher!
Thank you, Chris!
Hi from New Zealand,This is much better, in that, it easy to understand the alternating bass line, and when to finger pick the treble clef or high string/strings. Excellent guitar lessons, can't get enough, keep them coming. Can send hours playing my guitar :-) THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!
Thank you very much!
this is the perfect first lesson for alternate picking. might take me a while but its very beneficial id say. thanks for a great lesson!
Thank you!
Great lesson Eric..Thank you from the UK.
Thanks, David!
Hey Eric! Thanks a lot for that lesson!
Now I know what I'm practicing for the rest of the week!
So cool, man! Thanks!
I've been wanting to learn the finger style for years and recently learned to play hopelessly hoping by CSN and this instruction is helping me to approach it to the next level. Thank u so much
Thank you for your kind words.
Thank you, great lesson.
Great lesson! Clear, step-by-step instruction. I've always enjoyed listening to this style of guitar playing and it's been a real pleasure to learn a bit of the basics.
Thanks!
Great Lesson. I'm new to finger picking, and this video really helped a Lot.
Thank You for your patience and Instruction.
Thanks for your kind words!
Glad you guys are enjoying it. I love Eric too!
Thank you!
Eric, Thank you for sharing this wonderful musical knowledge. I have learned a lot. Your playing is very clean and your explanation is clear and articulate.
Thank you, Alfred. Jamplay.com posted this (and other videos). I have 140 videos in their site. Nice people!
Thanks for that, Eric, you're helping me unlock that mystery which is the alternating/drone bass playing alongside the melody, the essence of finger style blues. After eight years, I'm starting to get what's going on,and your lesson has accelerated that process. New Year greetings from Ireland.
agree... i always thought about playing this kind of thing, this guy helped a lot! Greetings from Brazil
Brazil? Greetings, guitar brother. I hope you don't run into any marauding police.during the protests against the world cup. From videos I've seen, they don't look like the friendliest bunch! Take care and happy playing!
Thank you, Richard!
@@MrDrspalmas That is great news, Daniel. Thank you!
When I was a member of JamPlay, Eric Madis ws my favorite instructor.
Thank you, Walter!
You are such a good teacher.. Bit by bit I got this down
Great news there, Patty. Thanks!
What a great lesson!
Thank you Adolfo!
Top one lesson, perfectly explained and showed via many cameras! Thanks a lot!
Thanks!
Thank you for a great lesson! Where can I find the rest of the lessons?
Also, a tip for other learners: Slow the video down by clicking on the three dots at the upper right, select Playback Speed. This is very helpful!
You and Orville Johnson got me to subscribe...definitely worth it.
This and you are so awesome! Really easy to follow and your way of explaining is informative and not condescending like a lot of other tutorial teachers.
Thank you for your kind words.
Thank you, our teacher !
Thank you, Hao!
A great place to start if u wanna thumb pick! this was fun and helped immensely! i learned more in 15 minuters than i have in countless(!) other UA-cam vids... so i joinedJamPlay and couldnt be happier:) this instructor has a plethora of lessons available.
Thank you, Amanda!
Really good lessons, thank you for share this wonderful lessons!!!
Thanks!
Definitely having fun...thank you!
Thank you!
Cool stuff man
I love all the camera angles you took. 🙏🏻☺️👍🏻
Excellent lesson! Thanks very much Eric.
Thanks!
Eric I really love the way you teach. Too bad you weren't around when I first started. I never could get a real grasp on the Piedmont style when I tried to copy it by ear. And just because I can Travis pick, doesn't mean that I could get the intricate timing down. You saved me a lot of frustration. I thank you a lot and I'll definitely be in touch. Have a great holiday.
Thanks!
I'menjoying this very much Eric, I'm going to take it slowly.
Thanks, Peter.

That's great news, thanks!
Great lesson - thanks! and I love the Instructor view, very helpful to see it from that angle because that's how I'm seeing the neck.
Thanks Eric, It was a Really Great Lesson. And having all the different Views or Camera Angles on what your'e doing makes it SO much easier to pick up.
Awesome.Keep the Lessons coming Please.
Peace & Love, Ryan
Thanks, man!
Eric Madis where I can find next videos in the series?

Thank you, Joe!
Excellent tutorial. Thanks for posting.
Thanks, Bob!
In answer to Pelu Maad's question, "Delta-Texas Blues? What delta is that?". What I was referring to was the style of blues. There are basically two styles of fingerpicking: the eastern and the western. The eastern is called Piedmont or ragtime blues, as I am sure you know already. The western style is seen in abundance from Mississippi on west through Texas, uses a monotonic bass and is more linear. Sure the Texas stylists tended to improvise a bit more than the Mississippi stylists, and of course there are individual differences between artists. But those are the two main styles. So what I was referring to in the Delta-Texas blues was the western style.
Eric Madis thanks for the info
excellent presentation
Thank you!
Fantastique. Merci beaucoup
Master class !

Thank you!
gracias
thank you, excellent class.
Thank you, Rogerio!
I like the lesson. Fits my needs. Don't listen to the other complainers. There are literally hundreds of free lessons on UA-cam. They can go there.... but that wouldn't address their need... which is to complain.
Thanks!
so nice and clear!!!!!
Thanks!
Sweet lesson, working hard at it, Ill get it. Thanks
Thanks!
Excellent lesson the timing of this style of guitaralways had me screwed - so here goes .......Thanks!!
The secret is in the thumb driven bass line. Good luck! You'll do it.....just stick with it and try to enjoy the basics before jumping too far ahead.
Super Eric...
Thanks, Michael.
Excellant, thank you kindly.

Thank you.

Thank you, sir!
nice.... i download all your guitar lesson... :) thanks you
Thanks!
EADGBE, though there are many other tunings used in Blues. Open G, open A, open D, open E and dropped D being some. But this one is standard tuning.
After finishing the basic lesson from this short version, we can actually go back to the begining of the video and pause to see where to fret and which note to pluck so as to complete the whole song, since we've already known the basic pattern of right hand. :D
Well, sort of. Actually in the series, I think I show at least a half dozen different variations of improvisation around the fretboard.
Excellent tnx
Welcome!
Excellent presentation Camera work was exceptional
Thank you!
Great lesson - thanks! I'm a fairly experienced (classical) player just getting into this sort of style. This is the first video that I watched/played along to. Nearly fell at the first hurdle - the temptation to pinch the two strings before the hammer on has been very difficult to break! Thank you from the UK.
Thank you Samuel, and yes, you are not alone. I have found that many people really want to pinch those two strings simultaneously.
Brilliant lesson, can't seem to see the next part for this tune though?
Nice picking going on!!
Awesome sirrr 😊👍🎸🎶🎶😊👏👏👏👏
the bass is strong in this one.
LOL, thanks!
great vedio for learning ragtime blues guitar
I need to see the rest of your lessons, especially the one after this....
Thanks!
very cool and helpful
SUPER!
