This is great, thank you! I'm a 52 yr old wife/mom and finally picking up my guitar again now the kid's are grown and gone and the Blue's was an area I never treaded on because back then, I was all about rock but I want to now! My brother is fantastic at it and I'd love to play with him some day! Never to old to learn!
Many thanks, I been tryin to find out about "blues guitar lesson advanced" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Wanichael Corylexander Equalizer - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my friend got excellent success with it.
@@goingbonzo5923 I think nowdays you need to post videos of yourself playing. I'm 59 and living in Austin, TX, which considers itself a "music town". But it takes time to find the right style of people. Oh, and you'll be pleased to know that younger folks are fine with us!
This is all I've ever wanted to do on guitar. Learn as I'm exploring what my soul needs to say through the guitar. Everyone else already said what they needed to in their songs. I wish to chill and speak my own sorrow through the blues. I really appreciate this!
There are so many vids on this subject but you've truly managed to explain the process in a short and understandable manner, Griff. Thank you, much appreciated. Timing, timing, timing...
Simple but effective. I like it. Never really considered counting out loud before. Been playing 50 plus years and the timing always seemed to come naturally. I can "feel" when to change up. Never too old to learn a new concept. Good lesson.
As someone who struggles with rhythm and ‘noodling musically’ I really needed this lesson. Love your content and inviting style of presentation. Thanks.
I've been waiting 25 years for a video like this! I've always thought I could play blues RHYTHMS, but I never knew how to add fills like this! THANK YOU!
I’ve been playing since I was 10 years old currently 17 almost 18. My dad taught me how to play. I’ve always been really good at it and knowing how to do all the bends and taps and arpeggios whatever...but there’s something I never did really learn at the beginning and that was blues! I’ve always been pretty shy about playing blues and solo with some backing tracks or whatever like soloing by myself. My brain almost shuts down and I get confused as In, idk what notes to play and put together. Holy shit...it’s starting to click, everything my dad has tried to tell me is starting to click....IT DOESNT ENTIRELY MATTER (It does but anyways) ABOUT NOTES ITS WHAT YOU FEEL AND TRUSTING YOURSELF AND HEARING THE MUSIC KNOWING WHAT KEY YOURE IN AMD SO ON AND SO FORTH. Thanks you helped my brain click
best part about blues, is literally anyone can play it. even better part about blues is with appreciation, you also enjoy it. it's one you can do at any time, any place, anywhere.... and always sounds so good. the world needs more blues... we'd have less wars lol. thanks for reminding me about this, i've been away from the guitar for a bit too long and i'm re learning what i used to do. this gave me a headstart on that lol.
You are an awesome instructor Griff. You make it look easy and you take out a lot of the rigidness by encouraging a freedom when playing individual notes.
Been snooping through a bunch of blues lessons/tutorials and this is definitely one of the most helpful ones I found yet. Clear instructions and explanations. Well done!
Nice lesson. I consider myself an intermediate guitar player; I've played for a few years and have worked the pentatonic blues scale for a while. This lesson gave me some great tips on how to practice using those scales (and work on my timing) without sounding like I'm just playing scales. Thanks.
notice band members never stand still? try nodding your head while you're doing it. keep the same pace with the nod.... bit like tapping the finger on the table for every second on the clock, only without the tap. that'll help you out a bit. then it becomes more about experience. the reason professionals are dancing around is more about them keeping their own time, as they can't always rely on the drums. sometimes that section doesn't have the drums lol.
I’ve been trying to play guitar - and the blues - for more decades than I can remember.... and finaly a clear, simple explanation that fits in with all the knowledge I’ve accumulated! Now I need to get the beast out of the cupboard... and plug in!
Counting is important. Subdividing the beat. Good time is crucial. You are teaching great instruction. Shuffles, Time is everything, swing, straight. Love the Blues.
This is like the second video of yours that I've watched - and man they are spot on - what needs to be done concisely w/o taking so long to explain. I'm coming off a burn out break and just starting back up - counting, and keeping rhythm - you've given me a great start to a practice routine. Thanks a ton - I'm hooked on this channel.
Great lesson,, I'm a 52 yr. old guitarist who is picking up once again. Back when I was younger the guys I knew who played didn't want to show you their tricks leaving the kids who didn't have money for lessons in the dark. Please share more!!!
Bought Griffs 'Acoustic Guitar Blues ' Dvd set for xmas, and making slow progress. He's a great teacher and micro manages every move he makes, which is the way I like it,he has a way of making things I thought I'd never be able to do look easy.....Great fun cheers Griff..
Yup. I learned in the 90s with no internet, now Im like an old man, "back in my day I walked 10 miles uphill both ways to go to the library with my guitar and read guitar books!!!"
Love this! Just goofing around on the couch and you can sound like a real guitarist to others who have no idea about guitar lol. Foundational scales are so underrated by us hacks.
What really helps me a lot is a metronome. I use a metronome app on my phone to keep time for me while I practice. Once I get my time down and know what it should sound (feel) like, then I can move out onto the front porch and not be afraid of sounding like a goof. :-) Thanks for the helpful video, Griff!
This has been the first video that helped me find out how to play and make something up when I’m playing. Thank you so much! I am in the stage where I’m ready to move in from just strumming. I’m definitely ready to hit that intermediate stage, and I just really want to thank you for this vid

Well taught man, you never think how simple music is at first because awesome sounds so hard but this video made it work. Thank you for your teachings, they'll go a long way man.
My friend that was awesome, if you ain't having fun you won't progress JMO. We get so set on having to learn that we forget we supposedly are doing this for our enjoyment. This particular process would be SO much fun. So I got to learn it from this video and remember to have fun doing it. First time listening to your channel and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for Sharing with us. Kirk n TX!!
Mr. Frehley.. I know the feeling .. years ago I finally learned - if it makes me feel this bad just leave it! There are many other sources that are much less complicated .. this works for me .. hope it helps you ..
Great lesson, Griff. It reminds me somewhat of Link Wray’s epically awesome, “Rumble”, with his E minor pentatonic rundown. The blues notes definitely add some flavor. Easily do-able by this beginner. Thanks for all you give back to the guitar community. Cheers from 🇨🇦
Full on guitar tricks member and could not comprehend how to start improvising. You helped me so much. Next is trying to figure how to move up and down the neck within scale. Thank you!
Dude, the "keep track of the song while you are playing " or "imagine the song in the background " is exactly the hardest part! I play acoustic for over 20 years and I still have issues with that.
Thanks fella! Straight to the point and Funny you said 'on the porch playing style' I was on the porch watching this video. I'll check out more of your videos for sure!
This is a damn good lesson I have been using it to work on learning new licks. Super fun to take two or three licks and work them in as you keep time and change chords. Thanks for the idea!
HEY MAN THANK YOU! I UNDERSTAND THE E MINOR BLUES SCALES BUT! STRUGGLING TO SEE WHERE YOUR FINGERS ARE POSITIONED WHEN YOUR PLAYING THE BAR GROOVE IN BETWEEN - MAYBE YOU COULD SHOW THIS ON A LINK WITH TAB WOULD BE GREAT 🙏❤

The "Blues" scale I learned was different. You explaining it as you show it.. is great.
It's so great that John Oliver takes the time out of his busy schedule to teach us the blues.
He moves too quickly....
Hahahahahaha
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 John Oliver.
I laughed so hard
its not john oliver idiot ......its steve carrell
