I am 64 years old and retired so I have time. I picked up the guitar 6 months ago for the first time in my life. I started working through a basic course and came to some of the false conclusions that was described here. I thought my hands were too small and I would not be able to play some of the chords and would never be able to play a bar chord. I kept practicing and it was almost like magic. One day I attempted bar chords and voila I was doing it. I've learned a number of songs, now. I like surf music and I am having a blast learning. If I can do it anyone can. This guy is right.

Am 55, one year in but have progressed very far in that one year. If this can be of any help to you or any other person, I am reposting some posts from my comment history...
1-If you can afford it, have your guitar properly set-up. Not just the action, also have it properly intonated.
2-When learning anything learn it as slowly as necessary to learn it right. Else you will just learn mistakes and bad habits and this will seriously hamstring your development. Speed will follow, eventually.
3-Music has three components. Rhythm, Melody and Harmony. Get your rhythm down first by strumming along to tunes on muted strings. In other words, never mind learning strumming patterns, you will pick everything up directly from the tunes you practice while muting strings. Always keep that strumming arm going (never stop) in alternating or pendulum up then down then up etc motion, right till the end of the tune. Eventually, your subconscious mind will have done it's job and will pick up 80% of simple pop tune rhythms within a minute of watching/ listening...
4-Use a very thin pick, when learning to strum and a more rigid pick for work on scales, modes and arpeggios. Find a good tutorial explaining how to hold and angle it, relative to the strings. Experiment with your picks.
5-Don't waste your time with fills, frills and solos unless you can strum a song keeping proper time and using accenting and dynamics. At least this way you'll actually learn how to sound good to orhers instead of fooling yourself into thinking you are better than you are. Once this is firmly established, you will also be able to fully reap the rewards of melody and harmony
6-When learning a new chord, press your fretting hand down with more pressure than is needed and hold down a few seconds before releasing and fully extending your fretting hand. If you are sitting down, just open that hand up and slap the back of it on your knee, them reform the chord and repeat the process ten, twenty times. The goal is to get to a point where muscle memory kicks in and your hand hits the neck with a fully formed shape instead of forming it one finger at a time.
7- if you don't know barre chords, just do exercise described in #6 without necessarily focusing on getting a clean sound. Just get to a point where your hand hits that fretboard in the proper formation. Then, press down and hold a few seconds, release, repeat ... You'll get to a point where you can play it clean.
8-When looking for a change of pace, play the major scale of and on each string, slowly and with only your pointer finger. Since there is no focus on either speed or technique, you will develop a feel for the major scale as well as for the tones on each string.
9-Do some work with a metronome, obviously. Most guitarists don't and can never keep proper time because of it. They just think they are "authentic, artistic and free" when unintentionally messing up the pulse when in actuality they are crappy "musicians". Very few guitarists have the natural skill, talent and ability to intentionally mess with the pulse and pull it off. People learning on UA-cam do not fall into this category. The history of Rock is strewn with the carcasses of drummers and guitarists who couldn't handle the click machine in a studio environment and got the boot because money talks and hacks walk.
10-Here is a list of simply arranged tunes you may find useful:ua-cam.com/play/PLRxyIguFM1DdOlrGcMYkeUoCSY8DiZY1K.html . I use it mainly to refresh my knowledge of tunes and to practice accenting and strumming dynamics. My go-to guy for practicing this last part is the Spytunes guru. For learning tunes, my go-to guy is Georgiarose16. James James/Privettricker is also a great reference, once you hit the intermediate level. Note: I don't use any tutorials from these guys; I just watch/listen and play along to their covers. For the most precise and faithful-to-recording tutorials, Shut Up And Play blows everyone out of the water: this guy is the best kept secret on UA-cam. For motivation and work on essentials, Claus Levin is hard to beat. David Walliman is also on my list as is the 365 guitar guy. For lots of very handy knowledge, the Lick n' Riff guy is a fount of information. Of course there is also Justin Sandercoe but his target audience forces him to go into x fret and y string during explanations and this may prove tiresome to the intermediate level guitarist.
Hope this helps and see you around the guitar channels!

I'm 61 and just beginning my music journey on guitar, so I'm doing ok, but for me right now bar cords are a bear! But I won't give up and look forward to the day I can say voila, and I'm doing them. But part of my problem also is trying to reach some of the frets with my fingers, but again I'm not giving up. So thank you for your encouragement.

I'm 28 and have been playing guitar (playing is an overstatement, I've been trying to make it make sounds) for 4 days, and I keep hanging a nagging voice saying, it's too late now you are too old. I find this video incredibly encouraging and helpful. Thank you so very much, and to all those out there starting out with soft pillowy fingers like me, pushing through the pain to get rough fingers, we are all in it together! And to everyone else, guitar players of any experience, or even people just watching for fun, I give you peace love and strength to pursue your goals.

You gotta keep at it, it's rewarding. It's hard to enjoy it when you don't know much, but once you have an understanding of the mechanics of music theory and the layout of your instrument, you can truly enjoy it. Everybody has a specific way of practice, I think it's best to continue to challenge yourself with new genres, tunings, scales and chords, etc. It's a snowball effect really.

Without a doubt, this video offers very best advice I've seen on what it takes to learn how to play guitar. Jim covers all the typical pitfalls and how to avoid them so that you don't get discouraged and think you can't learn to play. If you take away nothing else, pay attention to the rule of frequent short practice session versus occasional long practice sessions. After years of NOT following that rule and seeing little progress in my playing, I made a commitment to play 10 minutes a day, every day. Since I've adopted that approach, my playing has started to show marked improvement.

Iam self taught cuz lessons are so expensive. What this man says about playing guitar is so true and for that matter, what he says can be applied to anything. The more you apply yourself to something, the better you will get just like the old saying: practice makes perfect.

I'm 60 years old. I've been playing off and on since I was 19. I watched this entire video and can honestly say its spot on. I taught my son and kids in the neighborhood that wanted to learn. We didn't have the internet when I started. It was much more difficult then to learn new songs, know how and what to practice etc. If I were to do it all again I would absolutely start with showing those kids this video. Good job sir. Thanks and have fun everyone. It can be a very soul healing, comforting and fun thing. As Kurt Vonnegut once said "Go into the arts. I'm not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something."

Thanks, played electric guitar when I was a teenager. Had a friend with a big amp and another with a drum kit. We played together for a whole summer, can't believe my parents tolerated us. From there I played on and off for about 10 years but never really got much better. Then I just stopped for about at least 10 to 15 years. Now at 53 a friend sold me his acoustic/electric and I am learning the way I should have all those years ago. Usually about 20 minutes a day and learning all the chords. Doubt I'll ever be in a band or anything but hopefully I'll be good enough to have a few people enjoy what I'm doing. Thanks again, good lesson!

I'm 37 and after more than 25 years I'm back with guitar and I'm loving every minute of it. So he is right don't assume you're too old or it will be too hard - you just might surprise yourself. Side note: OMGOSH my memory has gotten ridiculously good - impressively good. You might just have some good side effects in addition to playing the music. Best investment at this stage of my life!!!

Best lecture I ever heard. I started guitar 50 years ago before yt and iPhone apps and had to learn by ear and watching other guitarists. In those days we had Bob Dylan to inspire us. I was advised to get lessons so I enrolled to a class and the teacher taught us Streets of London. It's still in my repertoire and one of my favourite songs. I practice 3 songs at a time spending 10 to 15 mins per song. Then I never get tired of the piece. First I analise the structure and break the song down to sections so I can just practice them. When I get it down I can add the vocals. They always come last because the muscle memory must be fully developed. Subscribed.

i learned the basic chords when i was in 6th grade. i played bass when i was in highschool with my friends and you know the word "play" just playing the basic chords and not learning about it. when i graduated in college I lost interest in playing and now i want to go back bc i feel useless and i just realized that playing bass/guitar is my talent, now i regret for not learning it when i was a kid. sometimes i am having a hard time and i cant catch it's bc i am taking it so fast, i feel like I'm behind, until i found this video. i learned a lot thank you :)

Just picked this up in 2019 as I am about to start... at 57. Found this introduction video to be straight talking, understandable and inspiring - thank you. Subscribed. I am a creative person, designer have produced album covers and related art for several musicians and bands, and technical (look after my son's guitars), love popular music including George Harrison, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton so already hooked in to acoustic guitar 'sounds'. First stage is to get enough down so I can run a song or two off at sound check to pre-flight my sons gigs (I can sing reasonably well, but cannot play or read music at this stage) - have access to a couple of decent guitars so here goes :)

I'm 64, pushing 65 way too hard. I enjoyed watching this. I started out less than 3 weeks ago with an inexpensive electric but since then, I found a very pleasant instructor and she highly recommended I get an acoustic. I've been watching a LOT of videos and have heard it recommended to start with an electric....but then I notice all their videos are using acoustics.....so I shook my piggy bank really hard and managed to come up with enough change to pick up an acoustic tomorrow. This video was one of the most down to earth, this is the way it is, that I have found and I subscribed. I've seen too many that are obviously geared towards younger people that have much more dexterity in their fingers....I don't so step on is just to start on the high E and start using fingers 1 - 3, I'll worry about the pinky later but when I'm at a flat spot I put my hand down and try getting that pinky over as far as I can. With time, it is going to loosen up. Looking forward to watching more of these videos.

I'm pushing 76 and have been playing guitar for years (but still not happy with my overall ability) and I'm in a band of middle aged guys who took up music about 3 years ago. This includes guitarists, bass, keyboards, and drums. We have now improved to the point where people who don't know us react in a positive way when we bash out our stuff. This is further complicated that they are all Czech (except for a yank bass player) :) and I'm British with not a lot of Czech language. So yes anything's possible.

best advice I think I can give u, as an aspiring blues player to another: get deep into blues history, seriously devoted. Go all the way, with a guitar in your hands of course... you'll absolutely love the path! Sooner than later, with consistency in both listening to the masters do their thing and trying to emulate them, you'll get there. Keep it up and enjoy the ride! A hug from Chile bro :)

Guys, I'm probably the least qualified person to give advice on playing any Genre of music. I am from Greenville Mississippi. The Delta Blues are still alive here but no one seems to want to learn from greats that are slowly passing on. I thought it would be a shame to be from here and not have blues in my arsenal of songs. Picked two covers from the Faces, "I'd Rather Go Blind", an Etta James number and "Love in Vain" originally by Robert Johnson(because I loved Ron Woods sound until he joined the stones and went into guitar obscurity behind Kief), and one song from Elmore James "it hurts me too" I don't care who's covering it. They are all awesome in their own way, From Clapton playing it on a semi hollowbody Gibson, yes a Gibson! To Warren Haynes, to Foghat lol who I always thought they were a southern band. They're British mate! I never knew. Anyway after playing them for two weeks something Erie happened. My wife has an affair with who i thought was a good friend of mine. Anyone of the songs could've been my life story at the time. And thus after the novel I've written here, sorry Greenville is famous for having more published writers per capita than anywhere and we tend to stray from topic. Often. Too often. It's in the water. Back on track, I started playing those songs that hurt me so bad at the time to play, a Eureka moment, hit with a ton of bricks. An idea so complex yet so simple, and quite frankly sounded well for lack of a better word, crazy. So after much ado, my advice for the blues. "One must get the blues, to get the Blues. If you go thru something bad, it hurts, you want to give up. USE THAT SHITE, chamnell it.. Oh and one last thing, when you find a blues song that describes you life so much it scares you. That's the one. When you sing it you shouldnt have any problems putting a little feeling or maybe even a little tenderness to it. Sorry for the rant hope it helps anyone

    • @MICKEYISLOWD
      @MICKEYISLOWD 4 роки тому

Practicing is split between two parts for me. 1 is becoming a better player of your chosen instrument and then learning how songs are put together. If you want to play guitar like Yngwie then you will have to practice guitar around 6-8 hrs per day playing repetitive patterns for muscle memory. If you want to become a great songwriter then learning theory and as many songs as possible will be the desired route to get there. We all need some of each. It takes yrs to get good at this so if you don't enjoy the practice its not really for you in the first place. You should enjoy getting lost in an instrument for endless hrs ideally.

So I have watched a gazillion videos on UA-cam and this one video sums them all up in about 25 minutes. Thank you for putting this together because at first I worried about being too old or having smaller hands, and you helped me realize these are just nonsense myths. I always tell myself that it has to stay fun, because it's a hobby and NOT my day job. I'm doing this because I have a true love for music and the emotions that come with playing and listening to it. 5 months ago I barely knew how to hold a guitar, now I can play a handful of chords fairly well, I'm working on finishing my first song, I know how to tune and how to switch out strings, I'm experimenting with a capo and I'm learning how to finger pick. If someone would have said I could do any of that last Christmas, I would have laughed at them and said YEAH RIGHT.

Really enjoyed this positive input for beginning guitar! I've actually been noodling n doodling for best part of 50 years without ever becoming a proficient player. Mainly because I lacked discipline & structure & just wanted to be able to accompany myself & write songs without being reliant on another musician. Like everything - if you want to be good at it - practice is the key - structured practice not just fooling around... I didn't aspire to be a Hendrix or a shredder - just to be able to make a sweet accompaniment to my singing. I found you to be an inspiring teacher & able to take me beyond my concepts of what I can & cannot do. Thank you!
