    Hi Paul 👋, I don't know how you find the time and energy to produce such amazing and informative presentations. You have unlocked a memory and a repeat of history for me. I worked in 50 Martin Place during the construction of the ESR and spent most of my lunch breaks looking down onto the construction site from the 7th floor of 50 Martin Place. The building was occupied by the Commonwealth Bank and the Australian Taxation Office, for which I was employed at the time. I am really happy they have kept this beautiful building, at least on the outside. I can imagine the internal layout has been significantly changed since the 1970's . I am excited to see the finished product of the new Martin Place Metro and I am excited to see more from you in the future. Thanks again, Paul for your hard work.

      Hi John, it’s not always easy, but I try to allocate 3 hours per day to video production. And I fit these longer videos around my shorter ones, so I often have 2 or 3 on the go at once! Awesome to hear that you worked at 50 Martin Place in the past. Hope it wasn’t too taxing for you 😀 Yes I’m sure it has changed inside, but hopefully not too much! Yes it’s definitely going to be a flagship station and like you, I can’t wait to see it open! Glad you appreciate the work involved.

      @@TransportVlog And Aussie John - 50 Martin Place was part of Open Sydney last year, meaning for one day, members of the public could access 50 Martin Place and see the inside and walk around the upper levels. You might both like to look into Open Sydney this year so you could visit.

    I'm following with great interest from here in the UK. Your updates provide a great deal of useful information. In particular this station, with its wide platforms and central concourse, is reminiscent of some of those of the newly-opened Elizabeth Line in London. I look forward to more content in the future.

      @TransportVlog  Рік тому +6

      Hi Marcel, Lovely to hear that you're watching my videos from the UK! Yes there's definitely some similarities with the Elizabeth Line for sure, and also the Jubilee Line Extension as well. As you've probably worked out from my accent, I used to live in the UK (in London), and I'm looking forward to going back when the airfares get a little cheaper, and it will be fun to ride the Elizabeth Line then!

      @@TransportVlog Thanks for the reply and, yes, I had determined that you're from the UK and probably from the London area. Yes, the JLE was quite a diversion from the norm because of the use of different architects for the stations... Canary Wharf is still my favourite because it's so vast, yet still has a grace about it. As you travel down the escalators from the main entrance the space opens out before you. Incidentally it's bigger than the nearby Elizabeth Line equivalent (although not in length) Also it's on my bucket list to visit Australia, Sydney and Melbourne in particular.

    The angled and curved tops of buildings are a very Sydney feature and driven by specific rules about Sun planes for Martin Place and Hyde Park.
    It's a shame the owners of 25MP don't care about the site linkages. They were very useful on wet days.
    At one point it was possible to go from the Colonial Centre on Phillip St nr Hunter, all the way to The cinema strip on George St nr Wilmot St without having to get wet or cross a street, almost a 1km distance.

    • @francesconicoletti2547
      @francesconicoletti2547 Рік тому +1

      The first time a major client of 50 MP gets wet because the link isn’t there, I suspect the owners might reconsider.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Mark, yes I did read about Sun planes in the SDPP and EIS docs, but didn't quite understand exactly what they are. I guess it's a way of ensuring that Martin Place and Hyde Park get the maximum amount of sunlight. Yes, that link was very useful and I used it regularly. As you know, you could walk from Martin Place station directly to Town Hall, the cinema strip and Kent Street, and if it had stayed (along with a Metro to MLC link), it would have been possible in 2030 to walk all the way from Barangaroo to Town Hall via the new walkways been created as part of Hunter Street station.

It certainly outdates any minor offering I had been preparing to get up, and may still, even though way out of date, now. Hope I can find any of your stuff I missed. Bravo again, Paul. But I don't suppose you can explain why they were able to demolish the art deco apartment block, if it was heritage listed?

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Mik! It is much harder (but not impossible) to demolish heritage buildings. Basically there is a process that must look at all other options first, and these might include moving the building, or building around it. It also depends on the building, its age and uniqueness, and also the importance of whatever is going to replace it. In the case of Martin Place North, I don't think it would have been possible to built the station in its current location, and to the size that it probably needs to it, without demolition this building. Hopefully we'll see a heritage interpretation of it somewhere within the station.

    You might want to make an update of Pyrmont Metro Station The buildings that are going to get demolished to make way for.

      Hi Nico, I filmed all the buildings at Pyrmont a few months ago, but haven't had time to turn it into a video as yet. I might wait until the demolition starts, as that will make a more interesting video :-)

    Hiya, is there a date for the Bankstown line closure as a heavy rail station? What with this closure and the OSCARS being displaced, there’s going to be a large surplus of stock even with K Sets gone. I wonder if they’ll rid some Tangaras too.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  Рік тому

      HI Tom, no not as yet, but likely to be late 2024 or early 2025, and it will probably close for about 6 months to do the conversion. All the rolling stock on the Bankstown Line will transfer to the T2 and T8 to provide more frequent services on these lines. This is all part of the "More Trains, More Services" project and you can read more about this here - www.transport.nsw.gov.au/projects/more-trains-more-services. The Mariyung / NIF / D Sets will displace the Oscars to suburban lines and that will allow the remaining K sets to be withdrawn. I think with Sydney's population growing, I reckon the Tangara's will be staying to provide more services.

    55 Hunter Street building, five Elizabeth Street building, seven Elizabeth Street building, 9 to 19 Elizabeth Street building, 8 to 12 Castleway Street building, 39 to 49 Martin Place building and 33 to 35 Bly Street building what the heck happened to them?

  • @static-san
    @static-san Рік тому

    Bit of a shame that they couldn't negotiate a tunnel link to the-building-formerly-known-as-the-MLC-centre. That's going to leave the steps west of Castlereagh as a bit of an eyesore.

    I wonder if these stations will be accessible for wheelchairs etc. Seems like they won’t

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  Рік тому +1

      Yes they will definitely be step-free with lifts for wheelchairs and other passengers that require them. . That's a legal requirement for any new station or building these days. However, not every entrance point has to be step free, so we might find that its step-free from the Castlereagh Street entrance only at Martin Place Metro North, but I reckon step free access will be possible from both Castlereagh Street/Martin Place and Elizabeth Street at Martin Place Metro South. Great question and hope my answer makes sense.

      Hi Chris, the metro station can open before the over station development has been completed. They can put a temporary passageway in and allow work to go on around it, similar to the Metro Concourse at Central Station, although it may not get the blue carpet treatment!

    Fast forward to September 2024 after opening... pretty close to how it was envisioned except for that blue tunnel that looks like they ran out of budget for proper design . Kudos to NSW ex-premiere Gladys for making this happen.

      Yes it was pretty close to the design. I quite like the tunnel with the audio visual art. It had steam trains sounds when I used it last week! Yes Gladys had lots of vision! Hope she's had a ride on it now!

    It's painful to remember that they demolished The Australia Hotel and The Royal Theatre to build that horrible MLC building. It would be like demonstrating The Savoy and Covent Garden. And it's a crumbling wreck. Another Seidler eyesaw.

    Thank you Paul. I’ve been avidly following your updates from Silicon Valley. Green with envy. California is completely inept at building public infrastructure. Everything they build here is substandard, delayed and way over budget. (Caltrain electrification, BART to San José, San Francisco metro expansion….. And dont get me started on CA High Speed Rail)

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  Рік тому

      You're very welcome Garry!, yes we do seem to do a good job here of keeping projects to time and on budget. We still have a long way to go, especially with high speed rail. But what is happening in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to increase rail capacity is very exciting! Hopefully things will improve in your area over the next few years!

    Can’t help but feel the Marin Place station is poorly designed, as a shopping mall first and a station second with far too much walking to get to the metro. Coming down one set of escalators than making you walk to the opposite end for you continuance rather than have the next flight right next to where you come down is an old trick to increase foot walk past shops. Plus SIX cross passages between 2 platforms?? Bit of an overkill.
    By the way always love your videos.

    Those artists impressions are awful. People don't walk around in all directions like that. They don't stand around admiring artworks in all-weather concourses. They will however seethe at how far they have to walk to get from the outside world down to platforms the escalators could have taken them directly into.
