Last night I used the new metro line in San Francisco, and caught a train from the new Chinatown Station to new platforms at the existing Powell Street Station. It was all very nice, but seemed so small and poorly thought out, compared to everything you've been showing us happening in Sydney. I'm really excited about spending another summer in Sydney; it gets easier to get around there, every time I go back.
Interesting! Seem like they're not building their stations for the future, like we are in Sydney. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time when you're in Sydney for the summer. It should be a dry and hot one this year!
What a huge win for wheelchair users living or working in Redfern. Having to travel to Central and back just to get off the train would have been such an inconvenience.
Hi Paul 👋 I am really impressed with this project and with your presentation showcasing it. I also enjoyed your interviews with some of our amazing young UA-cam creators and influencers. I ofcourse refer to Elliot, Matthew, Max, Phil, and Shareth. I must eat my words with this project as I have referred to it as "boxy and ugly" in previous videos on other channels and it is anything but. Yes it certainly is, and it's really improved the look and feel of Redfern Station. The Redfern area has improved alot in recent years too, especially on the west side.
Hi Paul, thank you so much for making this video! I especially loved that tall person with that brown bag! Also thank you for mentioning about the plans to build lifts at Platforms 11/12! I didn’t know they were doing that till you mentioned that here. A little bird told me you might be around Waterloo Station at an event I won’t mention. I was invited to go too so I might see you again!
Yes Paul…spending a penny is used in Australia…but mainly by older people I suspect…..another great video…thanks….can’t wait to check it out when I’m next in Sydney..
It's not a terribly common expression because here - unlike some other countries where you really do have to spend a penny (or more!) - the public toilets are generally free. But you do hear it, and everyone would understand it.
Brilliant overview! I particularly like your interactions with your fellow UA-camrs - you obviously respect each others interpretations which come from quite different perspectives.
I remember when that building was squats, and from the station you could see painted on it "people who need people are the luckiest people in the world" which had even then been there a long time
Yep! we've gone a couple of other collabs too. Here are links to them. Western Sydney Airport - ua-cam.com/video/Gcy4y22W5wY/v-deo.html and Aerotropolis Station - ua-cam.com/video/GDyVCQV6kD0/v-deo.html. These are proper collabs with much more of Sharath in them!
I went and had a look on opening day. It’s absolutely stunning. I love how they repurposed the old Marion St building for the new entrance. I also love all the subtle nods to local history, from the plaques and video to the Aboriginal art on the bollards. Redfern went from being one of the most annoying stations on the network to one of the most beautiful - and useful!
It has been many, many years since I used to head home from Uni every day via Redfern station. Frankly, I don't recognise anything in that video. It really has all changed.
The original part of the station probably hasn't changed much, but this video focussed on all the new and unrecognisable bits! The Uni students are already making good use of the new Little Eveleigh Street entrance!
I’m coming back to Sydney next week for the first time since flying back to Vancouver on 11 March 2020 (and being grounded the next day for the better part of 3 years). I’m legitimately looking forward to seeing the developments at Redfern, and thank you for this preview. Cheers!
Hi Samuel, wonderful to hear that you're returning to Sydney for the first time in 3 years. Your transport shopping list if you choose to accept it is Central Station (Central Walk and the North South concourse), going for a ride on the new L2&L3 light rail, Redfern Station and Sydenham Station. Also look out for our new electric buses! And if you like driving, there are also the North Connex and West Connex tunnels!

I was quite impressed with this new Redfern extension - that overpass pedestrian bridge is amazing. I bet there will be a lot more transpotters there now catching glimpses of vintage trains enroute to and from Central Station ( which I also gond impressive now that most if it is open - can't wait until the metro train line extension from Chatswood or wherever it is being extended to/from opens! The worse part of catching a train at Redfern Station before this bridge was built was transferring between the Eastern suburbs line platform to say Northern line platform and getting to Little Eveleigh Street to get to Carriageworks. Now it's a lot more pleasant a walk. I have yet to explore the other side of Redfern Station entrance/exit on Marion Street , I have only seen it from the outside back in Sept when it was not open to the public yet. I did not know about platform one buildings and structures. And I didn't know there were toilets. ❤ your video and how you spotted and interviewed other train spotting & town planning enthusiasts UA-camrs as well as construction staff - I watch some of their UA-cam channels as well! Unfortunately I didn't do a video for my UA-cam channel and only took a few photos of the new Redfern Satation extension. Oops I spoke too soon about access to the Bondi Junction line!
Glad you like it! - Yes it's great for filming trains, and will be a popular location for next years Heritage Transport Expo. Glad you enjoyed my interviews! Its not too late to do a video on this for your channel :-)
Paul, your video details the meticulous planning and deft execution of the whole Redfern Station renewal and upgrade project. It shows how heritage values and the imperatives of modern-day function can harmoniously be integrated when creative minds and skilled hands apply themselves to the task. This great outcome is sure to have enhanced the CVs of all who contributed.
I don't think that's a good idea, as those platforms are quite a long way underground! Besides, escalators increase the throughput of passengers, so removing them would reduce station capacity, and it would be very unpopular with passengers!
A correction. There was a previous pedestrian overpass that came out on the south side on Little Everly Street . It was a fairly narrow steel truss structure ( the sort common to many suburban rail stations but longer ) accessed from the platform by steps.
@@TransportVlog I remember it from my time at Sydney University in the ‘80s. I didn’t realise another bit of rail infrastructure had been allowed to decay. I’m glad the mistake has been corrected. I am not going to say anything about how Sydney University seems to keep missing out on a rail station of any kind.
@@TransportVlog That old bridge saved about 0.5 km of walking to Sydney University. This new bridge will come close to that. How can it have taken 30 years to provide a better transport connection?
Great video. You should have acknowledged the old footbridge. A few photos would have been good to demonstarte the improvements. Going to Sydney University during the 1970s we walked between narrow walkways at track level then up to the footbridge ,crossing the other platforms and passing the ticket inspector who took delight in harressing the students who forgot their train pass. This footbridge also provided access to Eveleigh railway works for the thousands of workers
Thanks Peter, I think I might have mentioned the old footbridge in a previous update video, but if I didn't, its certainly come up in the comments a few times. Maybe I can find a way to include it in a future video.
@@TransportVlog I’ve always loved trains & had a Hornby OO train set when I was a kid. I enjoy your vlogs a lot as they are always well presented well & enable me to see updates around the suburbs. I love the look of those double decker trains but not a great fan of the metro ones. Another connection with Redfern for me is that my father grew up next to Redfern Oval & the family back in Sydney still follow the Rabbitohs.
Great video Paul. New station looks awesome. I would like the engineers and architects behind that project to come down to Melbourne and work their magic at some of our neglected stations such as Flinders Street, Richmond and Dandenong.
Platform 11-12 is still left in the stone ages in the underground. Imagine having to move through platform 10 all the way up north and then turn around and walk again. Would've been nice if there were at least stairs connecting directly to 11-12.
Yes it doesn't really help platforms 11 and 12, but as I mentioned towards the end of the video, step-free access to these platforms is being looked into.
This former brick warehouse building in the 1980s/early 1990s had a huge graffiti visible to the train tracks: "People who like people are the luckiest people in the world", a one lyric variation of the 1964 Barbra Streisand song, 'People', written by Bob Merrill ('like' instead of 'need'). Or maybe was it 'love'?
That's interesting! There was quite a lot of graffiti on this building, which has all now been removed. You can see it in my earlier updates, and I don't think it was as pleasant as the Barbara Streisand lyrics!
Thinking of improvements at Redfern, I notice that between platform 10 and the underground platforms 11 & 12 there is essentially a "pit" which I presume is the unfinished space originally intended for 13 and 14. At the northern end of platform 11 you can see daylight peeking through between the boards forming the wall, and evidence of some greenery (weeds) growing there. It struck me that it would be a great thing to open up that space, which could be maintained as a small garden and allow air and natural light to flood in to 11 & 12 (at least at the northern end.) There could be a glass wall if too much fresh air would be a problem in winter... I am sure an architect could do something to turn that waste site into an amenity. Something for the powers-that-be to think about ...?
Hi Martin, yes I think that "pit" was for platforms 13 & 14. I totally agree. It would be lovely to open up platforms 11 & 12 to bring some natural light in. Let's see what happens over the next few years.
Quakers Hill station has one door lifts. Except for the one getting to the platform. Although I’m glad there is accessible access. It’s not worth it taking the lift on Railway Rd because it is one of the slowest lifts ever. Waiting for the door to open takes 5 seconds. I’m glad to see Redfern having quick lifts with single door. I love your videos and all the detail that you put in it. Keep it up
You're the first person to identify another station with single door lifts! Yes they are quite nippy now! The doors start closing as soon as you press a button. Glad you enjoy my videos and the level of detail!
Looks great and quite different from my last visit 12 months ago. Melbourne could certainly learn from lots of there design elements for a revamp of Richmond station along with a total makeover of Flinders street in the future.
Agreed. This station looks great, and Richmond definitely needs an upgrade. I would love to see the folks behind the design of Redfern overhaul Dandenong station as well. Dandenong is a very busy station but it's been totally neglected and the overpass and stairs aren't big enough for the number of people that use it.
Yes it's changed a lot! It would be awesome to see these kind of projects happening in Melbourne. I guess installing lifts is less of a priority as most (if not all) stations have ramps. And I'd love to see Flinders Street get our Central Station treatment!
Thanks, Paul and so glad you were there with all the other train spotters and videoers. I can't wait to get over there, myself, real soon. Pity more thought was not given in this big upgrade to accessibility to Platforms 11 & 12, kind of reflects back to Nifty Neville's canning of the Woollahra Staton on this Eastern Suburbs line that is now still not fully accessible. Lucky for labor that gets all the kudos for this big opening that they don't get the blame for the miss on this access. Now for the lifts to get finalised on Dulwich Hill Station! I am working on getting my latest Parra Light Rail Prep stuff up for you all...minus Parramatta CBD doings for now. Will do that once testing starts.
Hi Geoff, Yes hope you get there soon! I feel they did the right thing making the above ground platforms accessible first, especially as Central and Sydenham are alternative accessible stations for the T4. Platforms 11 and 12 are going to be much harder to do, but it will happen in the future. My Parramatta Light Rail update keeps slipping back, so it will be good to see an update for you!
Yes absolutely! They've been doing a good job with station upgrades in recent years, with new lifts added at many stations as part of the Transport Access Program.
great video Paul, wondering if they are going to remove the overhead power lines and poles at the beautiful Little Eveliegh Entrance? Also that hideous chainmesh fence!

Another great video Paul, I have a question slightly off topic I have seen maps of the new central walk indicating that there are food outlets ( shops ) I was there the other day and still no shops please tell me it’s not the 3 or 4 vending machines scattered around the new area
Hi Paul, Glad you enjoyed it. At the Chalmers Street concourse end of Central Walk, there is something that looks like a retail outlet. It's between the Chalmers Street concourse (not yet open) and the existing stairs to platforms 24 & 25. It's not occupied as yet, but it does look like it will be for retail.
Hi Paul, thanks for another great video. I was wondering why this looked a bit familiar, then I remember seeing one of Phil's videos with him surprising you, like you surprised him. i think you asked Phil the same question about the new Redfern entrance as he asked you on his video. Just wondering how you managed to film the distant shots of yourself on the concourse there, especially when you head off in the lift. it certainly adds an interesting effect. Wow!! You have both Sharath and Phil in this video. Interesting seeing Elliot and Matthew as well. Hey, it just doesn't get much better than that!!! Hmm!! I think that old heritage station office building may be the original Everleigh Station building. Are there any Metro platforms at Redfern? Also, do they have any escalators going down to the eastern suburbs platforms or only stairs? Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.
Hi Rob, glad you enjoyed it! Yes that's right. Phil and I did a mini collab! Sharath was the secret cameraman for those clips of me walking along the concourse and into the platform 8&9 lift. Yes it was lovely to have Sharath, Elliot and Matthew in the video as well. These events are wonderful for meeting other UA-camrs. The metro bypasses Redfern Station and has a stop at Waterloo instead. Yes platforms 11 and 12 do have escalators and stairs.
They finally put lifts on some of the platform. I used to get off this station and i’ve seen a handful of users struggle carrying luggages/prams up the stairs
Yes, they are used for T4 (Cronulla and Southern line) - though there is space for two additional platforms which were never completed and lie disused.)
@@Yitao_Su You have to take the stairs or escalator on the eastern end of the northern concourse. There is no lift, and no access from the new southern concourse, unfortunately. I imagine that a lift might be on the "to do" list. If you are wheelchair bound, you would have to take a train to Central and transfer there - quite a lot of bother.
23:10 I feel like it's the fan that cools the electrical components of the lift, and it's the outside air conditioning unit that's on top of the lift car.
That's good news to see the New Station concourse Now open for the public to use. Hi Peter, yes it certainly is! Good to know that you went to the same primary school as Matthew. I saw him again last Sunday at the Waterloo Station open day (video coming up for this soon!)
We need Jerome dwn here south of the border. He could show our cronies how to blend the "old with the new", that in our case is the Old bit we haven't finished, yet, with the New bits we haven't got round to starting, after all this time!!
Nearly 20 years ago in February 2004, Redfern station was the focal point of the Redfern Riots arising from the tragic death of an Indigenous teen. Many Redfern station users have no knowledge of this significant event of Sydney history. Everything changes.
Was there a reason as to why Transport For NSW failed to link the new bridge to Redfern platforms 11 & 12 (T4 Illawarra Line)? Since 1979, the T4 line has only been accessible via stairs and escalator from the Northern Concourse. This makes the T4 line an ongoing fire death trap as if a fire breaks out on the escalators or stairs, passengers on 11 & 12 have no method of escape, other than to possibly go into the train tunnels, risking life and limb by a train running the fleeing passengers down!
As I mentioned in the video, this is being looked into as part of a development proposal. These days stations are made of fire resistant material and there are lots of other measures in place to prevent and control fires.
You mean the platforms 11 and 12. Its being looked, but its not that easy to do. During the off peak, most Wollongong Trains stop on platforms 1 & 2 which of course now has lifts.
@mjcats2011 to be seen, Labor here is in minority, their record wasn't the best. In fact recent comments by them post election to possibly cancel a major metro project had a huge backlash. They'll go where the electorate goes, here in NSW transportation is an election winner, especially because it is so tangible and spread out from the metro to the suburbs and other large cities, like Wollongong and Newcastle.
@Soundmaster91 I think you are missing my point. ALP has made mistakes but they are for PT. The Coalition down here are not. Indeed it has only been the Andrews Administration that has put meaningful funding into it. Previous governments ALP or coalition had not.
Nothing, except your conscience, and the risk of being caught by revenue protection. And then, if there are barriers at your destination, will you tap, or jump.
@@daveg2104 that’s true. But more of the smaller stations now have poles and not barriers so I’m for seeing this is going to be a major headache. Particularly considering that Redfern has always been a drama station for fare jumpers
@@scottt8258 I suppose the view is that the possible loss of revenue is outweighed by the goodwill generated by allowing locals to use the new "bridge". If it is too bad, the locals might lose their privilege. Some of those smaller stations with the poles are quite busy. I just Googled fare evasion, and the first result was - From January to June 2021, fare evasion cost Sydney Trains $14.6 million.
Just one quibble, and I say this because both of my friends who use wheelchairs have called me out on the same thing: They both prefer to be thought of as _using_ a wheelchair, and not being _in_ a wheelchair. I honestly don't fully understand why, but since these are friends that don't know each other (in Australia and the US), and they've both said the same thing, it may be a pretty common view, and I'm sure you'll agree it takes little effort to speak about people who use wheelchairs in the way they prefer. Cheers.
Thanks for that. Yes I agree that "using a wheelchair" is the better way to say this so, I'll try and remember this for the future. Where possible, I tend to use terms such as "accessible" or "step-free instead".
Hi Paul - Interesting you didnt report on the fact that the new concourse entrance on both Marian and Little Eveleigh Streets both have no Opal top up machine forcing residents to have to walk all the way to the opposite end of the station if you need access to a top up machine. Speaking as a local resident I think this was really poor planning
Hi Stephen, I didn't notice the lack of Opal top-up machines. I guess these can easily be added. Might be worth contacting Sydney Trains about this. As the Opal gates are right at the entrance, I guess these would need to be on the other side, and that may be the reason for the lack of them.
@@TransportVlog ... Was good to meet you in person earlier today outside at Waterloo station. I hope you enjoyed the tour. I'll get around to emailing you that newspaper article I mentioned sometime this week .
@@TransportVlog Wow but given the billions spent on the Metro I guess $166 million on a station uplift is viewed as a bargain. (I hope the glass doesn't scratch and go opaque too soon).
@@TransportVlog, no worries, i didn't mean to imply that you were baiting the algorithm . I'll write comments "for the algorithm" when i've got nothing to add but i want youtube to continue showing me stuff like the video i am commenting on.
Redfern station is overrated. Commuters needing to make transfers are much better off doing so at either Central or Town Hall as this avoids the dreaded stairs on the northern end. This is especially true as Central station is now fully serviced with escalators and vertical lifts. This explains why commuters needing to make connections have traditionally overlooked Redfern.
I don't think interchanges were the main reason for the upgrade. As Sydney's 5th busiest station, it needed more capacity and the new entrances and aerial concourse achieves that. Personally, I would continue to change at Central, especially to switch between the T2 and T1/T9, as its a cross platform connection. However, if you're coming from places like Sydenham, Hurstville etc, and want to go west to Strathfield, Parramatta etc, then it makes sense to change at Redfern.
@@TransportVlog Yes, the much needed and deserved modernisation and expansion project of Redfern station is actually 20 years too late. However, as for commuters who do not live and work in the Redfern and Eveleigh areas, making train connections at Redfern is too bloody arduous as 2 sets of substantial stairs, up and down, have to be negotiated when making a connection. Making these connections at Central is far more easier. Moreover, a commuter is far more certain of securing a seat at Central, especially during the brutal evening peak hour. Again, this explains why many commuters ignore Redfern, even if this means they are travelling an extra stop. Switching platforms at Central is far more straightforward and easier as the subterranean stairs are more accessible. This is especially true for those needing to make a connection for the underground Eastern Suburbs, Illawarra and Cronulla Lines as there is less walking involved. Needless to say, there are a plethora of new and modern escalators and lifts at Central.

Thanks Mark, glad you enjoyed the interactions with other UA-camrs. We all met again last Sunday at Waterloo Station which had an open day.
Wow, you're running into everyone
Impressive, Central and Redfern done in a very 'aussie' way 😊👍
Thanks David, Glad you like them!
I remember when that building was squats, and from the station you could see painted on it "people who need people are the luckiest people in the world" which had even then been there a long time
That's interesting! - Apparently that statement comes from a Barbara Streisand song!
yes I believe the graffiti dates from the 60s, when the song was in the hit movie Funny Girl@@TransportVlog
Haha so cool to see my two favourite transport gurus in the same vid!

thank you
I went and had a look on opening day.
Yes they've done a wonderful job repurposing that building, and the whole upgrade has really transformed this station!
entrance particularly useful for south eveleigh access from T8 train from city, no more up and down stairs!
Beautifully done really! The work and your video.
Thanks!
Very cool

Yes absolutely! I couldn't agree more!
Awesome Video Phil of the New Redfern Concourse Really good walkaround of it and looking forward to the Botany Video whenever that comes out.
Glad you enjoyed it! The Botany Video will be my next one, hopefully within the next 7 days.
They need to put in a lift at platform 11and 12 Paul just pull the escalator out job done paul
I don't think that's a good idea, as those platforms are quite a long way underground! Besides, escalators increase the throughput of passengers, so removing them would reduce station capacity, and it would be very unpopular with passengers!
Beautiful station. Lucky Redfern! Good job Paul and the boys.
Yes it certainly is! Glad you enjoyed this video and the new Redfern Station.
A good comprehensive look at the remodelled red fern station, great to see Sydney improve to 21st century standards ✌️❤️🇬🇧
Thanks Max, yes it looks so much better now!
It’s giving ✨Footscray Station✨
A correction. There was a previous pedestrian overpass that came out on the south side on Little Everly Street . It was a fairly narrow steel truss structure ( the sort common to many suburban rail stations but longer ) accessed from the platform by steps.
Yes that's right! I think it disappeared in the mid 1990s.
Fantastic presentation! I grew up in Kensington & used Redfern station a lot when I was young. I now live in northeastern USA
Thanks! Wonderful to hear that you're watching my videos from the USA!
Thanks! Glad you like Redfern's new look! Yes I'm sure the architects and engineers would love to revitalise some of Melbourne's stations.
Brilliant Paul. Impressive attention to detail so clearly explained.
Thanks Peter, Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. Thanks for your dedication 🎉
You're very welcome! Glad you appreciate the work involved!
Thanks Paul awesome information and great video.
Thanks Jason, glad you enjoyed it.
Platform 11-12 is still left in the stone ages in the underground. Imagine having to move through platform 10 all the way up north and then turn around and walk again. Would've been nice if there were at least stairs connecting directly to 11-12.
It is now in the planning stages
Yes it doesn't really help platforms 11 and 12, but as I mentioned towards the end of the video, step-free access to these platforms is being looked into.
Another good video Paul. station looks great using all the older and new stuff
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it, and yes, it's a wonderful blend of the old and the new!
This concourse is so cool to walk on. And great video as always Paul!
Thanks, glad you like the concourse, and my video!
Great Job Paul - interesting details included !!! :-)
Thanks!
I went there last Thursday
Nice!
@jdillon8360, yes it would be wonderful to see both of these stations upgraded!
Very interesting Video Paul. Especially meeting other You Tubers and the construction manager
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! Yes the interviews added a nice extra touch!
Haha, 10000 stops goal complete!
I lived DIRECTLY across from that new entrance.....the smallest house, 132 eveleigh St.... the building was Lynn Maid textiles.....
Wow! Must be nice being so close to this new entrance.

Yes me too! - I've even seen people getting off trains on platform 1 with heavy bags and walking towards the aerial concourse before it had opened!
And I remember Redfern Station has underground platforms, are they still being used?
Yes, they are used for T4 (Cronulla and Southern line) - though there is space for two additional platforms which were never completed and lie disused.)
@@Yitao_Su You have to take the stairs or escalator on the eastern end of the northern concourse. There is no lift, and no access from the new southern concourse, unfortunately. I imagine that a lift might be on the "to do" list. If you are wheelchair bound, you would have to take a train to Central and transfer there - quite a lot of bother.

What new stations will be open soon and when. Thank you .
The 6 new stations on the Sydney Metro City & Southwest line (plus new metro platforms at Central Station) are due to open in mid 2024.
Nearly 20 years ago in February 2004, Redfern station was the focal point of the Redfern Riots arising from the tragic death of an Indigenous teen. Many Redfern station users have no knowledge of this significant event of Sydney history. Everything changes.
I wasn't aware of that, so thanks for sharing.
WHEN IS A LIFT GOING TO GET INSTALLED FOR THE WOLLONGONG PLATFORMS?

Big thanks to the previous government for their massive infrastructure vision including projects like this!
Yes absolutely! I hope Gladys comes and checks it out for herself!
You are very lucky with bi-partisan support for Public Transport. Down here in Victoria the Coalition are clueless idiots.

So question… what’s to stop people just walking through the “community access” gate and onto a train, ie not paying?
Most of the Sydney Trains stations have open access - why not get rid of gates completely and go for a German style proof-of-payment system.
@@jack2453 becuase those systems rely on honesty etc. not something that’s overly present on a lot of Sydney trains.
They Forgot to add Welsh Above Lol
So why is there a 'staff car park' at the best connected station in the country??
Good question! I think its days might be numbered!
9 ft wide stairs?
Possibly, but it depends which ones, as they vary.

Redfern station destroyed more like it.
Have the Aboriginal community been moved else where or are they still there?
Without escalators its rubbish
