Every artist needs to start somewhere. I never got the whole "araki stole from fotns" angle. It was one of his first works, & he evolved into his own style eventually. If anything, it came full circle as some Jojo fans are going to check out FOTNS remake in 2023 so it's all good in the end.
I was mainly bothered by the overshadowing of FOTNS by the latest JoJo fandom. As I started writing, the more parallels I found between the two. I'm aware that Araki had always provided his own input be it the Stone Mask, vampires, zombies, Pillar Men, Stands, ghosts, etc. Even the masculine side of things still had his own touches such as the number 7 lines on the cheeks. Or his weird veins that he draws on their arms & shoulders. I only found out recently that those lines were supposed to be veins through a Rohan OVA. Even so, I had to share this because I didn't like how people dismissed FOTNS or often refuse to accept it as something that predates JoJo. Even though a new anime is coming there will be people saying "This anime looks like JoJo!" type of remarks. I just hope those comments will eventually go away as the new FOTNS becomes available.
@@THEAnimeHERO I couldn't have said it better myself. I took also get bothered when people see something that looks similar to JoJo and they start saying "that is a JoJo reference!" or "everything is a JoJo reference",... I mean c'mon, don't they know about the fist of the North star? Also other anime and manga that Hirohiko araki copied from, even the poses some of them are taken from other art work yet people say "araki is the pinnacle of creativity". I not denying that araki added his own creativity but he's not as creative as people say. The scene in berserk where Guts is at the bottom of steps staring at Griffith, people say Kentaro copied JoJo but it might be inspired by the fist of the North star when Kenshiro is at the bottom of a set of steps is looking up at Shin who is on top. Stands were something I also thought was an original idea of JoJo but I was surprised and shocked to learn now that "Aura of the God of battles" is a power similar to and predates stand power and Raoh being a villain and wanting to rule and conquer heaven inspired Akuma (street fighter) and DIO, except as you said DIO actually wants to obtain heaven and needed a priest's help and wasn't his target until he came from the ocean and was introduced in part 3 but in the end DIO is still a copy of Raoh Great video Animehero and you've just earned a subscriber
Jonathan Joestar may have been inspired by Kenshiro, but Part 3 seems to be the part that took the most inspiration from North Star. From the very start of the series with Jotaro using Star Platinum to break the prison bars (in an almost identical way to Kenshiro breaking the prison bars when he was locked up in Rin/Lin's village), to Polnareffe being an almost identical character to Rei, Ora Ora Ora (and all variations) being Kenshiro's ata ata ata.
It is amazing how influental FOTNS is, not just JoJo but also Berserk, City Hunter, Baki, Toriko, Street Fighter, Tekken and possibly even Metal Gear as well (because of how similar the idea of Outer Heaven to Golan and how the founder that is Colonel and Big Boss inspired to create military paradise after they realise that soldiers are tool for government to use for their personal gain) Street Fighter is literally a big reference to FOTNS as there is tons of it in the lore such as Ryu is reference to Kenshiro while Ken is Shin (their name combined is also a reference to Ryuken) Tekken is how I imagine FOTNS story will goes if there is no nuclear holocaust happening (replace devil gene with Hokuto Ryuken), Jin Kazama have an uncanny resemblance to Kenshiro especially in Tekken 8 and devil gene remind me a lot to Hokuto Ryuken in some way (I also imagine Raoh being founder of a very powerful and influental company that his company secretly control the world had the civillization didn't died out like Heihachi Mishima) Late Kentaro Miura used to seek advice from Buronson when writing Berserk
Thank you for the insight. I'm not too familiar with Metal Gear so I never thought that the Colonel & Golan would play a part. Although, I've seen plenty of Capcom & other fighter or arcade themed games take a lot of inspiration from anime. Final Fight Rolento is modeled after The Colonel & I recall seeing Ryu concept art that was closer to Kenshiro. I think Karate Baki Ichidai played a bigger part with Ryu. Then again Hokuto Ryuken could've inspired the Dark Hadou. I'm also not too well versed with Tekken but I can definitely see how that could be HNK in a modern setting.
@@THEAnimeHERO in Metal Gear lore, Big Boss (formerly codenamed as Naked Snake and the first protagonist of the series, he also eventually will become an antagonist later in the series) inspired to come up with the idea of military paradise, where soldiers will always have a place in society and will not be manipulated as tool by the government for their personal gain called "Outer Heaven" after he realise he is betrayed by US government during the cold war and it remind me a lot to Colonel reason on why he founded Golan I personally believe Raoh will be similar to Heihachi or Kazuya if nuclear war doesn't happen and he doesn't become Ken-oh
@@KENSHIROez3260 Big Boss/Naked Snake wasn't the first protagonist, that's only if you go by chronological order. But in order of how the games actually released, Solid Snake was the protagonist for like 20 years before you finally got to play as Big Boss in MGS3.
i'm into north star since around 2008. then around 2014 i saw those stardust crusaders clips going semi-viral on youtube and got interested. literally the first thing i thought "woah, this looks like fist! might as well check it out". then i started with phantom blood and while experiencing the series i noticed the inspirations right away. however my interest in jojo has dwindled a bit, it's like everywhere now. ending of part 8 also left much to be desired and part 9 doesn't really grab me into it. oh, the final villain in fist can also shoot out some rib blades like santana
I got into Fist around 2011. I remember making a few videos when people told me about the JoJo OVAs. They recommended I watch them since Jotaro was like Kenshiro. I ended up watching those 13 eps and I liked it. I started reading the manga from Phantom Blood. When I was around Battle Tendency the 2012 anime got announced so the timing was perfect. Stardust Crusaders 2014 is my favorite one to watch due to it's detail but I also really liked the OVAs. I was upset and still am that we can't see the Phantom Blood movie. Nowadays I also lost interest in JoJo since Part 8 mainly consisted of weird things. I'm also not a fan of Araki's current style. While I understand that he wanted to pursue his own art I was okay with his format from 4-7. But I do prefer seeing his earlier work which was heavily influenced by Tetsuo Hara. Even the beginning of Part 4 had a very refined look which didn't last long as the characters quickly changed their designs.
@@THEAnimeHERO totes. and yeah, i LOVE Jolyne. i wish we would get more female characters who can be super manly yet still embrace their femininity. i would love more JoJo content. while it is a shame that modern JoJo in the past 20 years has strayed away from the manly direction, i can see the reasoning considering the focus on psychic battles. but even so, i do wish modern anime had a more manly look ngl. nowadays anime are all twinks, like, where's the big manly men and women!? like, jujutsu and chainsaw man characters are skinny sticks, while demon slayer and my hero characters are twinky. where's the huge bodies, huge muscles and huge eyebrows D:< of course, comedic aggression aside, i would love if manly aesthetics made a comeback. it's a shame it's missing in the modern era, and with JoJo part 6's anime having recently ended last year, that means no more manly anime are set to release in the current decade, as far as i know.
In terms of original or newer things, the only anime coming out that have that manliness are more Kengan Ashura & maybe Record Of Ragnarok. Thankfully, Kinnikuman & Fist Of The North Star are getting new anime. Although I wish Kongo Bancho would get an adaptation or other similar manga like Super Doctor K, Iron Fist Tough, Riki-Oh, Cyber Blue, Hana No Keiji, etc.
@@THEAnimeHERO oh, North Star is getting a new anime?! i've always wanted to get properly into it, but i'm a bit of a slow reader, so i haven't started the manga, and i know the current anime is flawed. please make a video on if the new adaptation is good when it comes out so i (among other new fans) know if i should watch it or not! well, only if you want to of course, lol.
Great manly work man! I noticed some neat Biblical references from north star as well like Kenshiro being able to heal and perceive people's thoughts/feelings like Jesus Christ. Jaggy selling the woman for food like Esu giving up his birthright for food. Also Kenshiro's brother wanting to conquer the heavens like Satan/Nimrod. The references to so many things are endless in Manga/Anime. Anyways fantastic work and well worth the wait, keep it up!
Thank you. I wasn't aware of that much biblical references. Although I did feel Kenshiro escaping Souther was a baby Moses moment to me. There's very blatant religious symbolism In later material such as New Fist Of The North Star & Legend Of Kenshiro.
How could you talk about biblical references without mentioning Shu being tortured and having to painstakingly carry a cross-shaped object upwards so he can be sacrificed?
@@Pyroniusburn Because I'm unfortunately not too familiar with both series. Wish I had more time to watch more anime. That's another amazing reference though
@@THEAnimeHERO i don't know if martial artists having their own signature kiai was ever a thing. In the godzilla universe each monster has an unique roar just like different animals emit different sounds. something similar also exists in kinnikuman where each choujin have their own signature laugh
There is another series of stand-like apparitions you forgot. When Ken first uses Muso Tensei all of his fallen comrades and rivals appear as ghostly apparitions standing next to him. Stands as a power may have also had some inspiration from FotNS as they are referred to as physical manifestations of someone's "Fighting Spirit", something that Roah says extremely advanced martial artists can do after he is able to manifest a barrage of fists to block one of Rei's attacks.
He was also the guy who dueled Yugi/Atem in Battle City where they have to face with loser getting their legs sawed off. Granted that duel was mostly known for that certain fan service card's debut...
It’s crazy the amount of people who mistake HnK for JoJo. To me it was the other way round 😹. Years ago I saw A clip of JJBA online and at fist I thought “hey, they finally reanimated all of HnK, I need to watch this” until I realised it was a complete different series.
Wow, that's pretty funny. XD. Yeah the mistaken identity still happens. I hope the new anime gets rid of that. Although I'm sure the misaccusations are gonna still be there when it first premieres.
Thank you Emi. I also wanted to comment on your latest video. Glad you got your own place. I just hope this new anime will shed some light on the comparisons and have FOTNS stand on its own.
I'm so glad you're able to make this video, considering we talked about this a few times from your past podcasts. I'll recheck my Animerica issue, but I remember Araki made mention of parodying 80s Action manga, with FOTNS being the largest influence! From Jagi's Helmet resembling Silver Chariot to Shin/ Kenshiro resembling Dio/Jotaro, it's hard not to see some other influences, besides the many you bring up! Also, lets not forget Whamu's Man Tears were a direct pun from the manly tears shed by Kenshiro and others!😂
You know I also have an Animerica Issue but that talked about the OVA. Maybe I should look at that, again. There was a portion that I didn't do which was gonna be a comparison photo of the Jagi pose done by both Araki via Justice Zombie & Miyashita through Edajima's scars. Honestly, Miyashita takes a lot from both series. XD
I had an artist table at a local anime convention and had my Kenshirou figure at my table about 8 years ago. Some young kid comes up to me and asked, "is that Jojo?" Little did I know that was gonna be my pet peeve ever since. Next time I hear it, I'll send them this video. Happy 40th Hokuto no Ken!
Thank you for watching. I'm very surprised about the reveals for the 40th anniversary. Sorry to hear about that. I usually bump into stories like that on social media but at least it's mainly out of ignorance and not out of malice. I recall a tweet about someone having a FOTNS shirt. He was complimented for having a nice JoJo shirt. He took the compliment because he didn't have the heart to correct him.
What’s surprising is how you didn’t mention the possible inspiration Shin had on Dio. Both are blonde sadists who vehemently oppose the protagonists of their respective story, even trying their love interests. Both are seen as rulers who desire to conquer and attain worldly pleasures. The final battle between Johnathan and Dio even being in Dio’s mansion, mirroring Kenshiro and Shin’s final battle in Shin’s headquarters.
So happy to know that new anime is happening. Remember we were talking about it in a previous' vid comment section. I hope SEGA does something about new FotNS games too.
The wait did not disappoint, another great video from you with a interesting outlook and perspective. Love how you didnt just stick to what's at face value, with the times Araki traced Hara's art, but also went to show that these series are kind of bound together by something deeper than just visual references and that their philosophies in laying down a narrative cross pathways more often than not. Also, Miyashita MENTIONED!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, Danny. I did surprise myself in some instance with the panels such as the Wired Beck & Cloth/Blade bandit. There's more panels but I couldn't fit them all into a narrative. I feel a lot of early JoJo was heavily inspired by FOTNS but I'm also aware that Araki had his own input till it became his own thing in JoJo P4 onward. I still like JoJo but I had to spread the truth.
Miyashita Akira was of many authors who were influenced by FOTNS. Part of me wanted to include Toriko, Berserk & Kongo Bancho but perhaps I could save that for another time.
@@THEAnimeHERO honestly i'd really love just general analysis of those manga and their visual characteristics and way they present the story, not a review per se, but really just an overview of a lot of the themes, aesthetics and represetation of those manga, even comparisons would be fun like with Kongoh Banchou x Kinnikuman and Otokojuku. Just generally looking forward to your content in the (hopefully near) future
Thank you. I've been on and off when it comes to making lengthy videos. I think this might be the structure from now on. Unless, I start making audio only reviews to fill in the gaps.
It must be some legal reason why Araki can't acknowledge his inspirations from Hara. Like when James Cameron acknowledged Terminator had some influence from The Outer Limits, Harlan Ellison sued him and won. Had Cameron said nothing, he would have been in the clear.
I also want to believe it's a courtesy thing between mangakas. There's a picture floating around of those two with Buichi Terasawa. They know each other but I don't know how close they are. twitter.com/otakucalendarjp/status/888280365156057088
At 20:42, Araki basically drew Violence Jack, almost 1-to-1, as a foe for Baoh; Violence Jack being a very direct inspiration for Fist of the North Star as well, since it predated most of the things shown there, even from the Mad Max films and had similar "auras" that acted as a method of intimidation, something Nagai loved doing in a few of his manga. Araki's style before Baoh even looks extremely similar to Go Nagai's style even, a style Nagai learned from his teacher, Osamu Tezuka. Heck, if you wanna go further, a lot of the hyper violence and disgusting gore found in both FotnS and JoJo come straight from Violence Jack, like ACDC's brain and its weird capabilities, fighting animals, weird, disfiguring attacks etc. And there's two other people influenced by Violence Jack and one of the two was also more influenced by FotNS : Kentaro Miura of Berserk and Hagiwara of Bastard, though Hagiwara was ostly Devilman, VJ and Dungeons and Dragons. Kind of a wild trip. Especially when you consider that outside of the "Hara Jawline", all the features from the sideburns, small eyes that get very shifty or light up and the massive eyebrows are characteristics of Nagai's art, traits that even his women have, like Cutie Honey; traits that other artists evoked as well, such as Ken Ishikawa, with Ryoma, Hayato and Benkei, Ryoma looking like a proto-Kenshiro in some cases and acting like a proto-Jotaro in others. And yeah, Hayama's art for the OVAs definitely pushed the three to series to exaggerate those features more and more to be almost "unified" as a "second generation" of Nagais, kinda like how Nagai started as a second generation Tezuka amongst his peers. On the copycats theme : Cyberblue is less of a copycat, given that Tetsuo Hara is the guy doing the art; he got some guy named "Bob", to do the story.
I remember thinking that Baoh enemy looked like Violence Jack. I do feel Jack himself did a play role in the construction of the manly archetype due to his prowess of being able to fight multiple people single-handedly. I decided to mention Cyber Blue as a copycat since that manga has two writers; BOB & Mitsui Ryuichi. From what I remember, Cyber Blue is the only manga they ever worked on and their ideas weren't exactly original. Despite being a sci-fi story, the tone was so much like FOTNS. That is assuming, Hara didn't provide any behind the scenes input for the story. Nowadays, Hara seems to be the license holder for Cyber Blue via the Coamix company. I suppose the masculine traits can be found in Go Nagai but there's also stuff from Monkey Punch, Takao Saito, or Kojima Koseiki that could've contributed. I don't recall who influenced Hara himself aside from watching Bruce Lee films.
Yeah it's a little challenging to find the source down the artist skill tree. At least with Miyashita & Araki it felt obvious that Hara played a role in their art.
@@THEAnimeHERO Not only that, Cyber Blue is a riff on Captain Marvel / Shazam, with the boy becoming an adult via "magic means" to fight evil as well, Cyber Blue is basically "Shazam but after sniffing that good Space Cobra and Fotns stuff". Takao Saito I'd say contribute more to the "masculine" image that the 80s artists seem to adopt since he was one of those who dwelved very much into the hardboiled detective genre, while Monkey Punch contributed to the comedic action, forging a parallel with Go Nagai before they branched out; Monkey Punch's influece are very ironically found in FLCL in modern times, the same OVA that had an entire episode dedicated to making fun of some Lupin's tropes and mentioning Monkey Punch by name in a 4th wall break. When it comes to Nagai, possibly due to his controversial status, a few seem to avoid it but others embrace the influence very much, like the late Miura and Hagiwara, given their styles and thought process. Another interesting influence in the shaping of artstyles is Monkey Punch being one of the initial influences of Takaya Yoshiki of Guyver fame given how his early style is similar to Kitazume's, which seems like a continuation of Monkey Punch's before both men among many other 80s allumni animators splintered off to make the visual style most associated with the 80s mecha genre and dark hero shows. A complete 180 from Lupin's lecherous, humourous and times hard-boiled adventures. But to put it simply, just like with Jojo, Mad Max wasn't enough to give inspiration for some of the goons' designs and some of their gimmicks and their hyper violence, especially the way brains explode out of the thugs' head in FotNS.
@@THEAnimeHERO Sometimes it can be very weird because it comes from the places one never expects, like George Morikawa; the man was very influenced by Ashita no Joe's and Tiger Mask's artstyle yet the deciding factor and evolution of his art came thanks to his first assistant, then an unpaid university student one year his junior, that got the gig for one day; Kentaro Miura. Funny how things work out. A similar case happened with Takeshi Obata if I recall correctly, his initial style being fairly different but while working on LAMP! one of his assistants influenced him to expand his artsyle and look up some Marvel comics at this and mecha anime; that was Nobuhiro Watsuki who was inspired by Todd McFarlane's Spider-man and Spawn along with Yasuhiro Nighthow's Trigun during the serialization of Kenshin. I suggest you read the Kamen Rider ZO manga by Kazuhiko Shimamoto, one of his favourite works after a hospitalized Ishinomori asked him to do the serialization of the synonymous movie to which he agreed upon since Ishinomori was his idol and biggest influence in his artstyle, an artstyle that came to influence many down the line. In that manga, there's a short story called "Osamu Tenka" where the eponymous Osamu Tenka has to go and work as an assistant to Ishinomori Shotaro's studio and he tries to understand how Ishinomori came to have such a style and why he can't copy his success. The story is based on true events and Shimamoto's first time as an assistant back in the day, seeing the mangaka(not Ishinomori, he wasn't so lucky), Shintani Kaoru of Desert Rose fame, practice drawing some of the most fantastic art from realism, dada and other styles, doing nature sketches and even copying renaissance paintings...only for the mangaka to then go and copy the drawings of Osamu Tezuka and Goseki Kojima(Lone Wolf and Cub) and then proceeding to copy the poses of some women's magazines before he finally drew in his own style. Shimamoto, just like Tenka in the short story, proceeded to do the same with even more fervor, abandoning his early art university notions of simply becoming a better Ishinomori, expanding his horizons. A whole lot of assistants begin like that or at least they used to, same with the animators and that's how the cultural shift to manga and anime came about during those years. Had such a course never taken place, manga would probably still be copying Tintin and Looney Tunes at best.
3:12 Was a pretty badass edit with Ken's Rage edit. Actually makes me hope the reboot has more metal tracks similar to Ken's Rage, it would fit perfectly.
Thank you. I'm expecting it to make a return. The metal has been appearing since New Fist Of The North Star 2003 and it's been part of every game since such as the 2005 SEGA/Arc Systems work game and Lost Paradise.
Fist inspired many manga at that time, jojo, doctor k, saligake…etc. Sure at the time there we other martial arts/combat anime’s at the time. But I feel like the battle shonen aspect that we have now is thanks to Hokuto no Ken and Dragon ball
Just today I found news of the manga getting another JPN release. This time with author comments from other mangaka. The first 2 vols had Akira Toriyama & Hirohiko Araki. twitter.com/jojo_wiki/status/1701834660420997564
21:39 The reason Cyber Blue (shown at bottom center) looks like Kenshiro is that it was drawn by Tetsuo Hara. (Hara's name is written in Japanese as 原哲夫, which you can see in the bottom right corner.) The top center one, 北斗王拳 looks like a straight Chinese bootleg of Hokuto no Ken. 17:33 Some clarification: The "to" (斗) actually means "dipper" rather than "star". "Hokuto" (北斗) is the "North Dipper" (what we call "The Big Dipper") and "Nanto" means "South Dipper", both real asterisms. (Constellations and asterisms are basically the same thing, but constellations are officially recognized by some group whereas asterisms are not. The Big Dipper asterism is part of the constellation Ursa Major.) When Hokuto no Ken was initially localized they probably thought "Fist of the Big Dipper" sounded dumb so they went with "Fist of the North Star" instead, and now we're stuck with it, as the name is too popular to change at this point. But it causes a lot of confusion 4:59 The Hokuto no Ken Leia's hair looks like Princess Leia's hair after the Ewoks giver her a makeover in Return of the Jedi. There's also a character named Han around this time in the FotNS manga. That Geila guy was redesigned to look less like Jabba the Hutt in Hokuto no Ken 2. George Lucas based Jabba on the "fat sultan" archetype, and was influenced by samurai movies like The Hidden Fortress as well as European sci-fi comics. The whole post apocalypse with bandits came from the Mad Max movies, with even a few of those punks based on specific Mad Max characters. There are several other character designs that Hara lifted from movies. A villainous version of Sloth from the Goonies appears in one story accompanied by a pet panther. Mr. T and Hulk Hogan appear at the beginning of the part of the manga that Hokuto no Ken 2 was based on.
I know that Hara drew Cyber Blue. I decided to put it there due to the two writers of the manga mimicking the tone of FOTNS wit a sci-fi setting. Yes, the center manga is a bootleg called Hokuto Ou Ken. I'm aware of some of the cameos but I don't remember Sloth being in it. I'll have to look for the chapter. I'm familiar with the connections to Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior. Characters have appeared sporadically in the Shin arc and I recall the Humongous mask during Raoh attacking Mamiya's village.
You did an amazing job gathering all this info.🙌🏿I've been a huge fan of both series for 20+ years (I'm more of a FOTNS fan) most of those parallels went over my head. Both series are heavily influenced from various sources. For me, that's the charm of anime/manga. I've been reading a book called "How to steal like an artist", so this vid is very relevant to me. Now I have to go to my book shelf and put these books side for comparison lol
That's incredible to hear. I've only been a fan of both for about 12 years. I'm pretty familiar with the whole "artists steal" thing but I felt I needed to address how similar these series are to each other.
@@THEAnimeHERO I understand. The live action was my first introduction to FOTNS. Then I rented the anime movie. I fell in love with it and started collecting various FONTS stuff. The late 90s JoJo vs game was my first introduction. Sadly collecting JoJo was a bitch because of copyrights. Thankfully VIZ came through with the re-release of both series. I'm very grateful. Being an anime/manga fan in the 90s was rough times.
10:38 Those glowing white eyes, they get me everytime lol. Anyway, even tho' the funny thing is back in 2018 when my first introduction to FOTNS and JoJo was the memes before reading both mangas online? It is pretty cool that both JoJo and FOTNS had influences with each other and had alot of Arnold and Sylvester action movie inspirations :) Also, imo I know some or many wouldn't agree with me on this but I still think it would've been cool if both FOTNS games like Ken's Rage and Lost Paradise get Switch releases cuz' if the JoJo games can get Switch releases? so can FOTNS games like Ken's Rage and Lost Paradise 👍
Hope to see that same Shin shot in the new anime since that sequence didn't appear in the 1984 anime version. Instead, his eyes were shaded black. I would like a new game that's either a 2d beat em up or a fighter.
Thank you Francoh. There's a segment I deleted which involved Juza with Weather Report. It involved their sisters but at that point I wasn't sure if it was intentional or purely coincidental. It was only about 3 sentences long.
He certainly stole a lot not just from FOTNS but from other illustrators, painters, sculptors, photographers, models, album covers, album & song names, manga, anime & movies.
@@mrfact03s You're not supposed to take it literally, it just means that art takes from what came before it and claims that the best artists do this a lot. It's really not something to get bent out of shape over.
Without even experiencing FotNS/HnK back then, I could not for the life of me enjoy the first two parts of JoJo in the anime as I kept getting this gut feeling "ahh, I can see that happening in Hokuto no Ken" almost CONSTANTLY. I did not cry at Caesar's death for a single moment, and felt that Hamon was just a poorer execution of Nen in HxH. I used to be that way, but today I love the sh!+ out of Parts 4-6 (yes, even a lot of 3), and the stuff to come in the anime.
I now need the "Oras" over Kenshiro. I'm gonna go search this here internet until I find it. "ATATATATATATATATATATATATATA" from Jotaro is acceptable as well.
I find it funny Kentaro Miura had explicitly named Hokuto no Ken as an influence when Araki hasn't, when imo it's way less of an obvious influence on that compared to Jojo.
I've seen other mangaka acknowledge it such as Shimabukuro although it was mainly through his other manga End Of The Century Leader Takeshi. He puts a lot of author's comments in Takeshi to the point where he even revealed pages of a manga he did as a child which was very Dragon Ball meets FOTNS. He also talked about a lot of Kinnikuman & One Piece. I wish Kentaro Muira expanded a bit more about the Hokuto influence. The Devilman stuff is very obvious in comparison to North Star.
I think I only provided the rightstuf link but thank you for letting me know. The other Legend Of Raoh Fierce Fight has been confirmed to be dubbed. But we're still waiting on news for the final Legend Of Kenshiro.
I guess talking about "modern" Lupin would be the next Lupin themed video such as Takeshi Koike movies, Woman Called Fujiko Mine,The First, Zero, maybe Part 5 & 6. I couldn't finish 6. Still hoping to see some type of news for the next Koike film.
I've seen a few things from Vinesauce like his Kinnikuman gameplay. Fist & JoJo have a lot of similar tropes. Thankfully, the new Viz scans for Fist Of The North Star are the best the series has ever looked.
There isn't much to compare to. Tonpetty seems to have passed naturally instead of being killed. He & Ryuken do have dutiful roles as heads of their respective arts but there isn't much to say about either or. I feel Ryuken has more character given how he selected Raoh & Toki, the flashbacks with Ken & Jagi and his demise by the hands of Raoh.
I hope it turns out great for that series has a standard to live up to. I'm just annoyed that the latest anime reveals don't have trailers or any relevant information other than "We're making one!". Kinnikuman is in the same boat.
who will win battle is Giorno vs Kenshiro the most powerful jojo stand user or the most powerful northstar technique who will win battle with two most powerful characters is DIO THE KING OF KINGS versus KAIOH THE FIST GENERAL OF ASURA thats means KAIOH is DIO OF NORTHSTAR WHY JOTARO IS KENSHIRO AND DIO IS KAIOH NOW THAT'S KAIOH THE RAOH AND TOKI LOST ELDER BROTHER ya know it anyway
Great video and yes Jojo cooied Hokuto no Ken It's also worth nothing that JoJo was copying hokuto no ken because a lot of series were copying at rhe time, like Otojuku which started as a comedic sort of parody, but then got serious and more like the material it was copying More people need to just admit and acknowledge that Hokuto no Ken was the inspiration for JoJo and without it that series wouldn't exist
Thank you for watching. I always get intrigued when series emulate FOTNS. Karate Apocalypse was a recent surprise in how much it didn't do a good job at it. The artwork was inconsistent between chapters. Although, I say JoJo & Otokojuku did a good job in being inspired by FOTNS while also adding their own manly & creative contributions.
That's because of both the art style & tone change. Once JoJo goes into Part 4 the idea of strong physiques isn't on the forefront anymore. P4 manga started with a very masculine artstyle which faded away into smaller and thinner designs. This carried over into P5 & the tone wasn't about masculinity. Ironically P6 lead, Jolyne, had more testosterone than the P5 cast. Although the Eng dub of P5 was filled with a lot of manly & deep voice performances. Once JoJo enters P7 till present with P9 there are no muscles. There are no stoic faced chiseled visages. It's become something else entirely as accompanied by Araki's eccentric writing habits like licking eyeballs for losing a bet.
By that point, Araki had come up with his own style and embraced his flamboyancy to the forefront of his work. Miyashita also changed the facial structure of his characters so they don't resemble Tetsuo Hara's designs anymore. Although even Hara had some art style changes that varied from better or worse. In the 2000's his characters were bigger and the women got curvaceous. But in the 2010's, the men look thinner and a bit more handsome while the women got way too skinny.
Wait, Jojo's mangaka *DOES NOT openly admit* that he took many things, I mean inspiration from Hokuto no Ken?? 😳 Oh no. I'm a fan of the Kakyoin series. Tsk. So he is like the mangakas of bleach & shaman king, both of whom *NEVER* acknowledge *#YoshihiroTogashi* as a main source of ideas for their anime hits of the same name. It's almost as if they _actively_ avoid saying *#Togashi**'s* name, most likely due to _"manly"_ *#pride** and male **#ego* since they are "almost" contemporaries. (For the record, I'm a big fan of both Bleach & Shaman King, specifically because of the many Togashi elements. 😤) Jeez, if only someone would make a video about togashi's influence. 😤
Im still upset about the fact that Rei dies at around episode 50 and then the quality of the show goes down drastically to the point where Its No longer even watchable the only good quality version is the movie
I don't think it gets downgraded immediately but I can relate once Fist Of The North Star 2 occurs and even the stuff afterward that's been manga only.

About time!
cgi....
I hope junichi hayama does the designs for this series
Stands were something I also thought was an original idea of JoJo but I was surprised and shocked to learn now that "Aura of the God of battles" is a power similar to and predates stand power and Raoh being a villain and wanting to rule and conquer heaven inspired Akuma (street fighter) and DIO, except as you said DIO actually wants to obtain heaven and needed a priest's help and wasn't his target until he came from the ocean and was introduced in part 3 but in the end DIO is still a copy of Raoh
Great video Animehero and you've just earned a subscriber
Jotaro looks damn near exactly like Kenshiro to me. Same stoic features and almost never smiles
Recently, I've been thinking that parts of Phantom Blood may have been inspired by The Highlander 1986.
@@THEAnimeHERO make a vid
Amazing like both jojo and fist of the north star
I like them, too.
@@THEAnimeHERO nice
Loved that Fist of the North Star is getting more love again!
This 40th anniversary was definitely celebrated to its fullest.
Jonathan is basically a Victorian Era Mel Gibson with Bruce Lee's Moveset.
Lately, I've been thinking that Phantom Blood was influenced by Highlander.
@@THEAnimeHEROoh definitely
It is amazing how influental FOTNS is, not just JoJo but also Berserk, City Hunter, Baki, Toriko, Street Fighter, Tekken and possibly even Metal Gear as well (because of how similar the idea of Outer Heaven to Golan and how the founder that is Colonel and Big Boss inspired to create military paradise after they realise that soldiers are tool for government to use for their personal gain)
Street Fighter is literally a big reference to FOTNS as there is tons of it in the lore such as Ryu is reference to Kenshiro while Ken is Shin (their name combined is also a reference to Ryuken)
Tekken is how I imagine FOTNS story will goes if there is no nuclear holocaust happening (replace devil gene with Hokuto Ryuken), Jin Kazama have an uncanny resemblance to Kenshiro especially in Tekken 8 and devil gene remind me a lot to Hokuto Ryuken in some way (I also imagine Raoh being founder of a very powerful and influental company that his company secretly control the world had the civillization didn't died out like Heihachi Mishima)
Late Kentaro Miura used to seek advice from Buronson when writing Berserk
@@THEAnimeHERO in Metal Gear lore, Big Boss (formerly codenamed as Naked Snake and the first protagonist of the series, he also eventually will become an antagonist later in the series) inspired to come up with the idea of military paradise, where soldiers will always have a place in society and will not be manipulated as tool by the government for their personal gain called "Outer Heaven" after he realise he is betrayed by US government during the cold war and it remind me a lot to Colonel reason on why he founded Golan
I personally believe Raoh will be similar to Heihachi or Kazuya if nuclear war doesn't happen and he doesn't become Ken-oh
@@THEAnimeHERO you should try the tough series. my current obsession lol
Fist of the north star is coming back with a new anime lets fucking gooooooooo
I hope a trailer comes out this year. I'm sure the anime will be released 2024 to match the 1984 anime anniversary.
so happy to see more JoJo content!! 🥰🥰
It's something I need to explore more often. My favorites mainly consists 1, 2 & 3. But I like the early art of Part 4 and Jolyne is great.
@@THEAnimeHERO totes. and yeah, i LOVE Jolyne. i wish we would get more female characters who can be super manly yet still embrace their femininity. i would love more JoJo content.
while it is a shame that modern JoJo in the past 20 years has strayed away from the manly direction, i can see the reasoning considering the focus on psychic battles.
but even so, i do wish modern anime had a more manly look ngl. nowadays anime are all twinks, like, where's the big manly men and women!? like, jujutsu and chainsaw man characters are skinny sticks, while demon slayer and my hero characters are twinky.
where's the huge bodies, huge muscles and huge eyebrows D:<
of course, comedic aggression aside, i would love if manly aesthetics made a comeback. it's a shame it's missing in the modern era, and with JoJo part 6's anime having recently ended last year, that means no more manly anime are set to release in the current decade, as far as i know.
Toki is also similar to Jesus in appearance and being a healer.
@@KasumiKenshirou Oh yeah he does, great catch!
How could you talk about biblical references without mentioning Shu being tortured and having to painstakingly carry a cross-shaped object upwards so he can be sacrificed?
@@Pyroniusburn Because I'm unfortunately not too familiar with both series. Wish I had more time to watch more anime. That's another amazing reference though
the battle cry thing must have started with kaiju movies. In the godzilla franchise each monster has it's own signature roar
It can go further back with martial arts kiai.
Fun fact btw dio jp voice actor is same guy who voice sartorius from Yugioh gx season 2
Rei in Ken’s Rage too
Yeah. Koyasu is in a bunch of anime such as Shaman King Faust, Gintama Takasugi, Neuro and even Bobobo.
@@THEAnimeHERO yup indeed he was voice in fire emblem series

There’s no question, JoJo was indeed “Influenced” by North Star, no matter how much Araki may try to avoid discussing it.
Great video dude
Thank you Emi. I also wanted to comment on your latest video. Glad you got your own place. I just hope this new anime will shed some light on the comparisons and have FOTNS stand on its own.
Fist of the North Star aka Jojo Part 0 xD
Fist Of The Joestar.
XD
It is known that Araki is friends with HNK creator, Tetsuo Hara.
I don't know how well they know each other but I was surprised with the Buichi Terasawa connection.
What a great manly video!!
Thank you.
Araki, is the old school UA-cam/TikTok video parody thief.
I wouldn't mind a Lost Paradise 2 or a beat' em up.
The kenshiro face existed in the 70s through the Otokogumi manga which was basically pre otokojuko
I can see the potential influence there. Most of my knowledge of Ryouichi Ikegami comes from Crying Freeman & Sanctuary.
So happy to see you again, man!
Thank you. I've been on and off when it comes to making lengthy videos. I think this might be the structure from now on. Unless, I start making audio only reviews to fill in the gaps.
A great video, awesome to see all the influences fist of the north star had on jojo
Thank you for watching. I noticed these things the moment I read JoJo.
Fist of the North Stand
There's also Fist Of The Joestar.
Always fun to see what inspired what and it's insane how crazy it goes down
I remember thinking that Baoh enemy looked like Violence Jack.
Had such a course never taken place, manga would probably still be copying Tintin and Looney Tunes at best.
amazing video brother really educational on the topic at hand
Thank you for watching. I just wanted to share what I knew and what I like about both series.
Great video Alex you definitely did your homework on this 1 bro .
Thank you. The hardest part was looking up the manga panels that were relevant to the topic at hand. And then I had to make them look nice together.
Thank you AnimeHERO, great video
You're welcome and thank you for watching my stuff.
This was definitely worth the wait.
Thank you for your patience.
The Big Dipper asterism is part of the constellation Ursa Major.)
When Hokuto no Ken was initially localized they probably thought "Fist of the Big Dipper" sounded dumb so they went with "Fist of the North Star" instead, and now we're stuck with it, as the name is too popular to change at this point. But it causes a lot of confusion
4:59 The Hokuto no Ken Leia's hair looks like Princess Leia's hair after the Ewoks giver her a makeover in Return of the Jedi.
Being an anime/manga fan in the 90s was rough times.

Kenshiro: SHIZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
I was thinking of Shu fits more with that particular scene. The South Star Sacred Fists are pretty much the JoBros of the series.
Love the addition of the Ken's Rage soundtrack!
It became one of my favorite anime game osts although I heard most of the music is ripping off Killswitch Engage.

Those glowing white eyes, they get me everytime lol.
Anyway, even tho' the funny thing is back in 2018 when my first introduction to FOTNS and JoJo was the memes before reading both mangas online? It is pretty cool that both JoJo and FOTNS had influences with each other and had alot of Arnold and Sylvester action movie inspirations :)
Also, imo I know some or many wouldn't agree with me on this but I still think it would've been cool if both FOTNS games like Ken's Rage and Lost Paradise get Switch releases cuz' if the JoJo games can get Switch releases? so can FOTNS games like Ken's Rage and Lost Paradise 👍
Hope to see that same Shin shot in the new anime since that sequence didn't appear in the 1984 anime version. Instead, his eyes were shaded black. I would like a new game that's either a 2d beat em up or a fighter.
n they look exactly alike
The Tetsuo Hara style.
What a thorough comparative, left no stone unturned. I love Jojo but Fist also needs some more recognition beside memes.
Thank you Francoh. There's a segment I deleted which involved Juza with Weather Report. It involved their sisters but at that point I wasn't sure if it was intentional or purely coincidental. It was only about 3 sentences long.
Great video, I enjoyed every second of It, thank you
Thank you for watching. Sorry it took so long to get here.
Nice profile pic btw!
10:47 Heh, nice use of the semi-uncut Italian VHS version of the 1986 film.
It's one of those rare circumstances where I could squeeze in some of that violence and become relevant to the discussion. XD
They say good artists borrow, great artists steal. Does this make Araki THE greatest artist to ever live?
My JoJo interests resides in parts1-3. I did like the early of P4 manga and Jolyne Cujoh.
I now need the "Oras" over Kenshiro. I'm gonna go search this here internet until I find it.
"ATATATATATATATATATATATATATA" from Jotaro is acceptable as well.
Here's an old one I did. ua-cam.com/video/JXfZEJi6RLc/v-deo.html
13:54 can somebody tell me the name of this theme
I looked up kenshiro theme and it didnt come up
Fantastic job!!!!!!!
Thank you. The manga panel gathering and collages were the most time consuming part.
15:50 Well, Raoh did one-shot Hyui in a similar fashion.
I think you're right. I looked at both manga & anime and they do have the giant fist.
On Fotns news; Amazon has The Legend of Yuri's/Toki blueray listed for November 28!
I think I only provided the rightstuf link but thank you for letting me know. The other Legend Of Raoh Fierce Fight has been confirmed to be dubbed. But we're still waiting on news for the final Legend Of Kenshiro.
Any Lupin videos in the future, I'd like to hear your thoughts on Lupin Zero.
@@THEAnimeHERO Part 6 was sadly not all that good. The only highlights were the Mamoru Oshii episodes.
I read FOTN because of JoJo and vine sauce joel saying they’re were similar.
So i said fuck it, and read the entire thing within half a semester.
I've seen a few things from Vinesauce like his Kinnikuman gameplay. Fist & JoJo have a lot of similar tropes. Thankfully, the new Viz scans for Fist Of The North Star are the best the series has ever looked.
Kenshiro is the face of MANLY ANIME MEN!
Manly visage.
Its time to rewatch Kenshiro Kills Dio again 😂. I like both but HNK is better because I love the Mad Max style.
I'm hoping the new anime is done in 2D. This might become my favorite thing of the year.
Finally some HNK respect being paid
I'm still waiting for a trailer of the 2024 anime. I NEED IT!
Ora Ora Ora intensifies
Soon that'll be Atata intensifies.
what about Ton Petty and Ryuken?
There isn't much to compare to. Tonpetty seems to have passed naturally instead of being killed. He & Ryuken do have dutiful roles as heads of their respective arts but there isn't much to say about either or. I feel Ryuken has more character given how he selected Raoh & Toki, the flashbacks with Ken & Jagi and his demise by the hands of Raoh.
What are your thoughts on the remake thing annoncrd recently?
I hope it turns out great for that series has a standard to live up to. I'm just annoyed that the latest anime reveals don't have trailers or any relevant information other than "We're making one!". Kinnikuman is in the same boat.
@@THEAnimeHERO I feel the same way
It all goes back to Bruce Lee!
who will win battle is Giorno vs Kenshiro
the most powerful jojo stand user or the most powerful northstar technique
who will win battle with two most powerful characters is DIO THE KING OF KINGS versus KAIOH THE FIST GENERAL OF ASURA
thats means KAIOH is DIO OF NORTHSTAR WHY JOTARO IS KENSHIRO AND DIO IS KAIOH
NOW THAT'S KAIOH THE RAOH AND TOKI LOST ELDER BROTHER ya know it anyway
Kenshiro would win
Giorno doesn't even understand how ger works
Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And love Fist of the North Star !
Thank you for subscribing. I need to talk about the teaser visual and what little information we have on the new Fist Of The North Star anime.
@@THEAnimeHERO Thank you for your reply ! If you are interested in the nostalgic game culture of Japan, please subscribe to the my channel !
🍿🥤
ENJOY!
Great video and yes Jojo cooied Hokuto no Ken
It's also worth nothing that JoJo was copying hokuto no ken because a lot of series were copying at rhe time, like Otojuku which started as a comedic sort of parody, but then got serious and more like the material it was copying
More people need to just admit and acknowledge that Hokuto no Ken was the inspiration for JoJo and without it that series wouldn't exist
Loved the video. Just 1 question: Why do u believe jojo is no longer manly?
@THEAnimeHERO I see I see ok not my take but I fully understand your point of view
@@THEAnimeHERO I think the Araki drawing of Kenshiro illustrates the differences between Araki's current style and Hara's quite well.
Jeez, if only someone would make a video about togashi's influence. 😤
I've been rewatching Yu Yu Hakusho & I haven't been liking it as much as I used to back in the 2000's.
finalyyy
I know. There are times when I didn't work on it but knew I had to finish it someday.
Hokoto no Ken Also copying wing chun fighting technique
The IP Man movies did portray a rush attack. No idea if that's truly accurate to history.
SHUUUUUUUUUU >>>>>>> shiiizaaaa
I mean Shu lost his son, too.
